Killjoys “Schooled” was directed by Ruba Nadda with a story by Jennifer Kennedy and Julian Doucet and Doucet providing the teleplay. Nadda has primarily directed films and shorts that she’s written herself, and Kennedy’s other credits include Justified, King, and The Wilkinsons. It’s another fast paced episode that reveals more mysteries than it answers.
When Dutch and D’Avin arrive at Pree’s (Thom Allison), they get a lead on the kid they are supposed to pick up, but also learn that Pawter got out of one jam and into another. John finds her as a captive on the Salt Flats just in time to see her arm wrestle her freedom from Big Borna (Natasha Bromfield). Things get more complicated when Borna finds out Pawter is a doctor – and a good match for one of her boys. We get a nice bar brawl – but with a few too many cuts and shots up too close for me.
Dutch worries about John putting himself in danger to save Pawter, but D’Avin points out that’s what makes them a great team: “You lead. I shoot. Johnny gives a shit.” D’Avin also points out that even their father couldn’t beat the hero out of John. And the episode does a nice job of giving us a bit more information about D’Avin and John and reflecting on the sibling relationship.
Pawter tells John about the information she stole from SpringHill. She’s concerned that Qreshi Royalty is a big part of the problem – if not the problem – as they are planning to construct walls around all the cities in Westerley. She tells him she can’t just sit by and let the company do whatever it wants. John convinces her to hole up in Lucy (Tamsen McDonough) until she figures out what to do next.
When Dutch and D’Avin arrive to take Jake (Jack Fulton) to Prodigy, they hear a scuffle between him and his father Lans (Stephan Park). D’Avin puts him in his place because he doesn’t like bullies. Lans doesn’t want to lose the last of his family, but eventually lets him go. Jake is nervous about seeing his brother Olan (Ricardo Hoyos) again – they haven’t heard from him for three years.
They arrive at the school to find it deserted. But they are welcomed by a familiar voice – Delle Seyah Kendry (Mayko Nguyen). They discover cryo-pods – John suggests they’re making kid-sicles! Still plenty of humor throughout the episode – most often John’s one-liners. Delle shows up to collect the kids and locks down Lucy until they can all figure out what’s going on.
Delle asserts that she only arrived just before Lucy. They weren’t expecting a new class for another six months. Delle is testing a new “teaching method” – essentially they input the students’ education directly into their brain. The only person who should have access to the children – Malta Chambers (Jane Johanson) is also missing.
I loved getting to see Delle and Dutch “hate-flirting”! But Delle knows that there is more to Dutch being there than simply delivering kids. John and Pawter make a great team as they “science this shit” to figure out what happened to the kids. As it turns out Pawter and Delle grew up together – as all the Nine did. Pawter tells John that “chemistry’s a bitch, and so am I” – she and Delle have a complicated history.
Delle’s bodyguard, Bruxton (Jake Michaels) is taken out by Chambers. And Pawter discovers what’s left of the children – and it’s not pretty. Delle refuses to leave until they capture Chambers and find out who’s behind the children’s death. Pawter insists that it was the “neural-feeding” that killed them, but Delle refuses to believe it.
Chambers wants Delle to answer for her crimes. Dutch shoots Delle when she refuses to act as bait! Dutch has figured out that whatever Delle is up to, it’s not being sanctioned by her own people.
John tells D’Avin to speak to Jake, who’s bonded with D’Avin. Jake wants to stay with D’Avin rather than go home, but of course, that can’t happen.
Dutch tells Delle that they are at Prodigy to try to recover Khylen’s last transmission. Delle says it doesn’t make sense because she and Khylen always communicate on a schedule – but she doesn’t say what about. Chambers doesn’t trip the sensors because she is merely a digital ghost – a holo-projection. Pawter discovers that Chambers was liquefied with all the kids, but not all the kids where liquefied – Olan is still alive! D’Avin is attacked and electrocuted by a tiny robot after the kids hear an announcement at a frequency only they can hear.
Olan is going to cut off the life support and steal Lucy. Olan is clearly not ok, though. He’s suffering from visions, but he’s determined to save his brother – and not return to their father. Jake tries to convince him that the others are good people, but Olan refuses to believe that Killjoys can be trusted.
Delle offers to pay Dutch back with two lies and a truth: “One. I drink the blood of the innocent. Two. I love your hair. Three. The Prodigy program is a living, human, seed bank to protect all Qreshi culture and knowledge.” Dutch points out that there a two reasons to keep a seed bank – winter or war – and Delle tells her that the reason depended on Khylen’s message.
Jake comes to John for help. He knows there’s something wrong with his brother. Pawter and D’Avin put the other kids in the cryo-chambers. Pawter tells D’Avin the pods are safe. The other children were liquefied by a massive data surge – Khylen’s data dump, right? But at least it wasn’t Olan. However, the data dump is now IN Olan. Olan is terrified that John is simply going to hand him over to the company for more experiments.
John tells Olan that Chambers was trying to save him and that the data dump has affected him. John tells him he wants to help him.
Meanwhile, with the kids in the cryo-pods, D’Avin and Pawter argue over who should take the last pod to keep from suffocating. Pawter tells him that his brother is a good man. D’Avin agrees – but tells her he snores! Dutch and Delle make it to the control room, but Delle appears to be unconscious. When Dutch asks how to turn on the life support, Delle kisses her – breathing her own biometrics into Dutch to turn on the life support – way to go Delle!
John tells Olan that he’s a crappy big brother. He left Jake alone in a crap town with a terrible father – and John knows exactly what that’s like. He’s fooled Olan with a projection of Jake, so Jake never has to know anything about what Olan has done. John tells D’Avin that he played the little brother-guilt card – and D’Avin teases him about which girl John was trying to save – Lucy or Pawter?
Dutch knows that Delle can’t take Olan to any of her people to get to Khylen’s data. Dutch gives Delle her own two lies and one truth: “One. I’m your best shot at keeping Olan safe because he’s just as important to me as he is to you. Two. I’ll share with you whatever he reveals. Three. I didn’t hate that kiss.” Delle accuses her of telling three truths, but lets her take Olan. She also points out that whether Dutch likes it or not, they’re allies now.
Dutch takes the kids to the Scarback Monastary on Leith. She asks Alvin to help unlock whatever is in Olan’s head – and keep them secret. They still need the key to the skinscrolls in order to unlock the encrypted text. There’s plenty of chemistry between these two again!
The final scene almost seems like a dream sequence as it is shot semi-focused and with a blue filter. It’s Fancy (Sean Baek) rescuing Khylen. They are headed to Telen – the Jacobi’s home planet. Khylen wants to know why D’Avin was immune. Fancy tells him that the Black Root will know they’ve deviated from their course and will come for them. Not surprisingly, Khylen isn’t too worried.
It was nice to see the return of Delle. I’m hoping we get more interaction between Delle and Pawter at some point in the future. I’m really liking the dynamic between Dutch and Alvis, and I hope we see more of it. Khylen and Fancy are also going to make a great team. I’m starting to see more of the attraction between John and Pawter too. What did you think of the episode? Any guesses as to what’s in that data dump? I’m wondering if we will see more of D’Avin and John’s family coming up… Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

Beauty and the Beast - Episode 4.10 - Means To An End - Promos, Promotional Photos & Press Release
Killjoys “Meet the Parents” was written by Adam Barken and directed by Jeff Renfroe, whose other credits include Houdini and Doyle, Beauty and the Beast, and Being Human. Interestingly, Barken also wrote episode five in the first season! This is another pretty intense episode with the action taking place on two fronts and the major season arcs seeing some developments.
Meanwhile, John (Aaron Ashmore) is once again off helping Pawter (Sarah Power). As the title would suggest, we get to meet some parents in this episode, including seeing Pawter’s father, Weymer (Andrew Gillies) again. The episode includes one of the most awkward family dinners ever. The butler, in particular, has a shattering experience.
D’Avin ends up improvising at a bad time. There are two good fight scenes, the second of which is quite good. D’Avin also demonstrates an affinity for music.
Dutch ends up being only a slightly better judge of character than Fancy (Sean Baek). Fancy gets a several shocks as the episode unfolds. Pawter has to act quickly to lend a hand. We get some answers as to why D’Avin was immune. John has to make a choice. Dutch comes to some important realizations.
It’s pretty clear by the end of the episode how the season is going to end. And finally, someone goes skinny dipping in this episode. To finish, here are some dialogue teasers… in no particular order…
Why do my teeth ache?
I was a carpenter once.
When is a daughter not welcome home?
So much water it’s like being licked by angels.
I’m right here. You just have to let me in.
Push back. Improvise.
Use the science. Help the others.
Sometimes we have choices, and sometimes we don’t.
Professional opinion? I don’t like the look of that fog.
I have to stop that bomb.
To protect what you love, you must become something that you hate.
Be a bit more explain-y.
They serve drinks in pine cones. How cute is that?
This is flirting? Because I remember it being less uncomfortable.
Let’s go meet the family!
The last time your head went weird, you tried to kill me.
Your reaction to this is exactly what we’re looking for.
You are welcome to step outside and find some other technology.
When you love two people equally, you have to make a choice. You have to choose the one who makes you a better man.
Don’t forget to tune in to Killjoys on Syfy tonight at 9/8c!

Mr. Robot - SpoilerTV Comic Con Interviews with Christian Slater, Carly Chaikin, & Grace Gummer
The last two episodes of The Last Ship gave audiences everything they could possibly want from this show: a daring rescue, shifting alliances, harrowing deaths and bat-guano crazy action.
The sixth episode of season 3, entitled "Dog Day," saw the crew finally rescuing Slattery and the captured officers. Unfortunately, their success comes at a cost, as Cruz loses his life to the Vampirates. This development in the captured crew members plot did wonders in showcasing Travis Van Winkle's abilities as an actor. When I say he brought the emotion in this episode, I mean it. The look on his face as he sits by a dying Cruz is enough to make you want to binge on a tub of Ben & Jerry's, then curl up into the fetal position. Bravo, Mr. Van Winkle, on your best performance as Danny Green to date.
The next episode, called "In The Dark," follows the crew as they attempt to make their way back to America, with Takehaya and his sick, pregnant wife in tow. Their Nathan James team runs into a bit of a problem, though, as they discover they are being tailed by Chinese ships. With his knowledge of the waters the crew is trying to navigate, Takehaya offers his assistance in helping the crew evade their enemy. The writers' decision to cast Takehaya in the role of savior in this episode highlights the thing I've loved most about this season. In contrast to previous years, the enemies of season 3 really flip flop between dark and light. You never really know where anybody's allegiances lie. That certainly makes for rich storytelling.
Back in the United States, President Michener is confronted with sins of the past. When it is revealed to the media that he brought his infected son into a safe zone during the initial outbreak, thus killing everyone around them, Michener commits suicide. While I am glad the writers utilized this piece of Michener's past, which was first brought up in season 2, I am a little disappointed that they chose to kill off the president. I would have liked to see Michener stand his ground despite what the press was saying about him. Granted, having the character commit suicide will surely add all sorts of new drama, but I feel that this plot point represents a rich opportunity for character development.

We find out what happened to Pawter (Sarah Powers) and that she has a hidden talent – or two. Alvis (Morgan Kelly) makes an appearance too, but the episode really focuses on John (Aaron Ashmore), D’Avin, and Dutch. Though they do run into another old “friend” - Delle Seyah Kendry (Mayo Nguyen).
The three end up going back to school. The episode opens up the opportunity to get some insight into D’Avin and John’s relationship. Neither D’Avin nor Dutch are very comfortable around kids. D’Avin proves how much he hates bullies.
Look for a return to form in the fight department – there’s one really good one! John is surprised by someone’s technical abilities. There’s also a really interesting game of two lies and one truth.
And finally, here are some dialogue teases – in no particular order. See how many you can link to the character!
I need your full focus now.
You lead, I shoot, Johnny gives a shit.
I do love a road trip.
You suck the fun out of everything.
If we get attacked by zombie kids, I’m going to be so mad.
I like your hair. I’ll sell that first.
I need to know who’s behind this.
Don’t you dare fantasize about this later.
I’m starting to think my demons are haunting all of us.
Ok. Now it’s weird.
A brother will always have your back.
You work for the RAC. I don’t want to get you in trouble.
He may be a scootch late.
My tribe’s more fun.
What’s it like living a life so free of nuance?
I promised I’d come back for you, and I did.
Chemistry’s a bitch and so am I!
You’re no one’s bus driver, and I’m not a fool.
You are a shitty big brother.
That is how a bar brawl is born.
It’s a lot creepy.

Killjoys “Wild, Wild, Westerley” was written by Sean Reycraft and directed by Martin Wood. Both are new to the show, which may help explain why this episode felt different for me. Reycraft’s other credits include Finding Carter, The Vampire Diaries and Degrassi: The Next Generation, which might explain the increased humor and somewhat less serious tone. Wood’s other credits include effects and sci-fi heavy shows like Cedar Grove, Sanctuary, and Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate SG-1.
They need a warrant to get in so they head back to the RAC only to discover that Turin (Patrick Garrow) is still alive! And not a level 6 – ouch! He assures them that the RAC is back to being neutral and provides them with the only warrant currently active in Old Town.
The team arrives to find Old Town is now surrounded by a high-tech wall – which John (Aaron Ashmore) immediately falls in love with! We also see that Pree (Thom Allison) was once a warlord named Prima Dezz!! SO many layers, Pree! Jelco (Pascal Langdale – another alumni of Bitten like Garrow) is in charge of the wall and the holder of the warrant. There’s been a prison break, and he wants the team to catch the escaped prisoners, especially Tarren Tighmon (Kedar Brown).
Heading into Old Town the team discovers that someone has taken over the Royale – and Pree is pissed! Dutch challenges Gared (Gavin Fox) to fight for the bar – for Pree but also for a distraction so that John can scan the patrons of the bar. We get a good fight scene – but not the show’s best and it’s played a little too much for laughs for me. They do also identify one of the escapees (Tyler McMaster), but he kills himself rather than surrender. Pree stays at the bar while the other three head to the prison, even though they know it is likely to be an ambush.
At the prison, they find Carl (Jameson Kraemer) the last of the guards who pushed the red button that caused the mummification of the prisoners – which they find in the cells. They learn that Tighmon has escaped with a lot more of the mummification gas.
The team goes to Pawter (Sarah Power) – finally! – for help. She’s been working tirelessly to provide medical attention for the people of Old Town – and she’s hidden Hills (Frank Moore) who is also – miraculously – still alive! Hills gives them some insight into Jelco, telling them that his specialty is more extraction and torture, not management of a town.
John is clearly happy to see Pawter – and she is happy to see him. He wants her to appeal to her mother for help to get off Westerley, but she’s determined to stay. I did love the bit when they warn her about the body being gruesome, and she laughs at them, telling them the last guy she saw came in holding his own intestines, but “ew, mummy….”
I also did love Pawter taking Gared out when he tried to steal all the painkillers from her! She is able to tell the team that the only way to neutralize the gas is with water… a lot of water. They also turn to Alvis (Morgan Kelly) for help, but he is in a very dark place when they find him. He does agree to help and Tighmon agrees to talk to Alvis and Dutch. He insists that he is trying to protect the miners and their families who the Company have completely abandoned. He insists that Dutch needs to speak for them. However, while Jelco had them, he put trackers on them, and the Company drones are able to locate them and kill Tighmon.
Jelco offers them free passage out if they bring him the tank. Pree refuses to leave the bar again. Alvis takes the tank and is going to gas the Company until the others tell him that Hill and Pawter are with Jelco. Hill is trying to do the right thing in helping to get Pawter out. He tells Jelco that in saving people, he saved himself – and then Jelco kills him. Pretty sure this time he’s really, really dead.
In order not to kill Pawter and Hills, Alvis ends up breathing the gas in himself, and D’Avin risks his life to save him by tackling him into a tank of water and almost drowning him. It’s nice baptism/re-birth imagery that goes along with Alvis re-discovering his faith – continued in the next episode.
When they return to Jelco, he tells them that Old Town is being used as an example of what happens to those who rebel against the Company. He also tells them that Pawter is now a guest of the company – which she doesn’t deny. John kisses her goodbye – clearly some unfinished business between these two – though why anyone would want to hook up with a sibling’s old flame is a bit beyond me – regardless, John uses it to plant a device on Pawter’s neck so that they can communicate with her.
Dutch asks Alvis to come to Arkon with them. Alvis agrees but points out that there have been no Scarbacks on Arkon for 200 years – another mystery of the vision. However, as Lucy (Tamsen McDonough) tries to leave, she is suddenly brought back to Westerley. It’s Turin. He tells them that the RAC is actually completely compromised and the Level Sixes are in control, but Red 17 is gone. He agrees to help them with unsanctioned warrants if they help him. They are all being used until they know the RAC’s end game.
The last we see of Pree, he's not letting anyone else fight his battles for him - in case you were worried he really needed Dutch to protect him. And of course, Gared suffers one more very painful defeat at Pree's "hands."
I liked the title “Shaft” because it works on two levels – always an easy sell for me. Of course it refers to the mining shaft the team goes down – and specifically the one we first see Dutch through, but it also refers to the team getting the shaft from Turin and Turin getting the shaft from the RAC… The episode was written by another newcomer – Jon Cooksey – and was also directed by Martin Wood. Wood really manages to capture the lighting effects and contrasts which really caught my notice in the first season. Cooksey’s other credits include Arctic Air, The Collector, and Rugrats. The emphasis does seem to be on the more cartoon potential of the show, which is a shame in my opinion. And don't get me wrong - I'm a huge fan of graphic novels and comics, but I'd rather not see Killjoys as a Saturday morning cartoon...
This episode does begin more traditionally – for the show – in medias res. Dutch appears to be trapped somewhere and suddenly Khylen is there and cuts her belly open to prove she’s a level 6! And then it’s 12 hours earlier, and we’re back with the team with Turin on Westerley…
Turin tells them that Khylen is behind a covered up rescue signal for a team of Killjoy salvagers that came from the Northern Badlands. The team is interested because Khylen was interested, so they head to the rescue. We get a lot of tight shots of them driving around the Badlands – which seemed like a cheap and somewhat boring way to avoid a lot of CGI… The do find the ship from the salvagers and it is mysteriously covered in moss – on the inside!
John makes contact with Pawter. She tells him that she’s determined to do some good – as a way of getting justice for Hills. In the end, her father, Weymer (Andrew Gillies), refuses to rescue her from Springhill anyway.
Meanwhile, Dutch seems to grow closer to Alvis. He tells her that he’s thinking of leaving the Scarbacks. Dutch is shocked and tells him not to give up his faith.
Dutch, D’Avin, and John find Tania (Lina Roessler), who is frantic for them to come down into the mines with her to help save her sister Deanna. She tells them that Paulo (Zach Apostoleris) attacked them. Tania tells them that they were sent to salvage a monk. Alvis comes in handy as a former miner, and tells them that the Scarbacks all started in the mines.
Jelco, it turns out, is also a Kreshi, though not a 9 like Pawter. He is clearly smitten with her. He also insists that she drain the fluid from around his heart. She uses the opportunity to trap him with his own explosive leg monitor device, which she takes off of her own leg and puts around his heart! Nice work, Pawter!
The mine is a pretty cools set. I liked the use of the crystals and blocking walls as well as all the twisty, turny tunnels. Lots of great use of blue flashlights too! This episode did feel like it captured the Killjoys look.
The team is separated after John tries to take Tania back to Lucy and Tania freaks out and causes a cave in. The moss turns out to be a disgusting organism. I loved John’s description that they look like angry vaginas! And it’s brilliant to call them moss-ipedes! In the end, they eat Tania – and have clearly eaten Paulo and Deanna. Their bites cause hallucinations. They realize that the mine hasn’t been played out at all – there are still lots of crystals – but it was shut down because of the moss-ipedes.
After D’Avin stomps one, he asks, “What’s filled with green goo and you can’t kill it?” Apparently moss-ipedes and level 6s. Dutch has been bitten and hallucinates – taking us back to the opening scene. She’s afraid that Khylen is going to make her kill all of them.
Meanwhile, Alvis has found the Monk – and apparently his faith as well. He takes the knife from the Monk. Alvis is the one to save Dutch, but telling her that he’s not leaving without her, so if she wants to save him, she’s going to have to get them both out of there. On their way out, they make another discovery – the moss-ipedes run away from D’Avin!
Pawter has discovered that there are walls around all of the cities of Westerley – but not what that means. The team heads to pick her up, but before she can rendezvous with them, she is knocked out.
Alvis goes to check on Dutch in her cabin. She tells him that it’s time to accept what she is – a weapon. Alvis tells her that he feels that there was a reason that she brought him to the mine, to find the Monk. He also tells her that the Monk cut off a piece of his own skin to leave a message. There is an old adage from the faith – 12 left to fight the devil on Arkon and only one came back. Alvis is going to go to a monastery on Leith to check the old scriptures for more information on what it all means. Just as Dutch is about to kiss Alvis (YES!), they are interrupted (NO!).
The episode ends with Dutch telling Turin that she’s done taking orders. From now on, they’ll do things her way. So lots of interesting mysteries set up and already starting to dovetail together. Ashmore has settled back into his character a little more quickly than the others. We never got to see much of Alvis last season, so I hope they don’t just sideline him on Leith. I like the idea of a bigger team – and us getting to see more of Alvis – and more Pree, please! What did you think of the episodes? Theories on who has knocked out Pawter?
