Tracker - Into the Wild - Review: It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Colter Shaw!

In tonight’s episode of "Tracker," the action-packed series delivered a thrilling mix of aerial danger and on-the-ground sleuthing. The episode began with a dramatic opening as Colter found himself enlisted by Reenie to track down a missing plane in Idaho. The missing aircraft, piloted by Gus McMillion's son Hank and carrying his daughter Madison along with a mysterious client, Walter Bratton, set the stage for a suspenseful rescue mission.

The odds of having a loved one go missing in a person’s life are slim, yet somehow Reenie has already had two people disappear in her life. This is clearly the writer’s way of planting Reenie into the storyline with Colter, but hopefully a new tactic will be deployed as the believability of this is waning.

As Colter and Reenie delved into the disappearance, they met with Gus, who had already spotted a debris field near the Canadian border, hinting at a disastrous outcome. The plot thickened with the introduction of a suspicious character, Vaults, who was in search of the elusive client. Reenie's sharp instincts kicked in as she captured photos of Vaults, showcasing that she is not just a great lawyer, but a clever investigator as well.

"Into the Wild” – TRACKER, Pictured: Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw and Fiona Rene as Reenie Greene. Photo: Sergei Bachlakov/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The tension escalated when Colter had to skydive into the debris field, only to discover a body assumed to be Bratton’s, marked by violence that suggested foul play. This discovery unraveled a series of clues including damaged cell phones and a tracking device, indicating a deeper conspiracy at play. Meanwhile, Reenie's tenacity shone through as she broke into a car related to the case, uncovering potentially incriminating evidence against Walter Bratton. The drama peaked when Reenie, while coordinating with Colter, heard gunshots. Rushing to the source, she found Gus laying on the ground after having shot a gun-wielding Vaults, adding urgency to the unfolding chaos. Her pursuit led her to discover Bratton's desperate measures to secure a Canadian passport, hinting at his attempt to flee the country.

On a cliffside, Colter's heroics were on full display as he rescued an injured Madison, who revealed that Bratton had coerced Hank into altering the flight path for a smuggling operation. This revelation was compounded by Teddi and Velma's research, which pointed to a botched robbery involving dangerous criminals from Reno, further complicating the narrative.

"Into the Wild” – TRACKER, Pictured: Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw. Photo: Darko Sikman/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The climax was intense: Vaults confronted Madison and Colter, shots were fired, and Colter was injured. Despite his gunshot wound, Colter's determination to find Hank led to a dramatic shootout under a cabin floor, resulting in Vaults' death and a narrow escape for Colter and Hank.

"Tracker" consistently portrays Colter as nearly invincible, whether he’s repelling from planes or taking bullets without lasting harm, which borders on feeling quite hokey and ridiculous at times. The believability of his skills would be increased with more knowledge of his background. Amidst the adrenaline-fuelled action, Tracker occasionally falters in its character development. While Colter emerges as a formidable hero, the show's focus on his heroics leaves little room for exploring the lives and backstories of the victims. Despite tantalizing hints about Colter's own past, including the upcoming introduction of his brother and sister, played by Melissa Roxburgh and Jensen Ackles, the narrative feels somewhat unbalanced.

"Into the Wild” – TRACKER, Pictured: Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw. Photo: Darko Sikman/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

If viewers are able to ignore the show's obvious faults, they are sure to be treated with a fast-paced narrative and suspenseful scenarios that keep them on the edge of their seats. "Tracker" remains a gripping watch for those who enjoy high-octane action paired with complex investigations. Hopefully the character development will come within the final episodes of the season, paving the way for much more depth in season 2. Your turn, Tracker fans! What did you think of tonight’s episode? Are you enjoying Colter being paired with Reenie? What do you hope to see in the final few episodes? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Sullivan's Crossing - Confessions - Review: Managing the Storm Within

Tonight’s episode of "Sullivan’s Crossing," masterfully juxtaposed the chaos of an incoming hurricane with the turbulent emotions brewing among the characters, resulting in a captivating hour filled with tension and revelations.

The drama picked up directly where we left off, with Maggie and Cal arriving at the hospital amidst a flurry of emergency services, only to discover it was all a false alarm. However, the relief was short-lived as they learned of Sully's misdiagnosis and his subsequent escape with Frank. Maggie shared with the doctor that her Alzheimer’s diagnosis was wrong and that Sully did not have a stroke after all. Instead, he was dealing with an alcohol-induced vitamin B1 deficiency. This set off a chain reaction of worry among Maggie, Edna, Sydney, and Lola, as they grappled with the need to locate Sully quickly so that he could return to the hospital for treatment.

As the hurricane bore down, everyone’s focus shifted to securing Sullivan’s Crossing. During these preparations, viewers were given a deeper look into Cal’s past, as he revealed to Maggie about his childhood with an angry father and his role as a peacekeeper for his siblings. This personal insight into Cal’s past, provided an understanding as to his calm demeanour and his ability to navigate complicated situations with people.

“Confessions” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan and Chad Michael Murray as Cal Jones. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

Tensions flared when Maggie received a call from Andrew, who became jealous upon hearing Cal's voice. It's clear that despite Andrew's claims of change, his old patterns persist. Similarly, Lola's behavior in the episode underscored her as a disruptive force to Cal and Maggie’s budding relationship. Her flirtation with Cal, coupled with her decision to shelter a pregnant camper, revealed how her outward persona is a mask for her spiteful internal motivations. Lola confided in Cal about her deep respect for Sully but also mentioned that Sully's need to treat people at the Crossing like family, stems from his own family's abandonment—a conversation overheard by Maggie.

As Maggie stowed away outdoor furniture at the Outpost, bracing for the storm, she reminisced about the tender moment between her and Sully, when he expressed his pride in her. She confided in Sydney about Lola's remarks and revealed her discovery of the newspaper clippings at Sully’s home that highlighted how much he cared about her, prompting her to reflect on the impact her departure had on him. Seeking more insight, Maggie asked Edna about how Sully met Frank. Edna explained that Frank was his sponsor, but suggested that Maggie discuss it directly with him, emphasizing Sully's reluctance to share his struggles with drinking to avoid causing worry, owing to his proud nature.

“Confessions” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Amalia Williamson as Lola Gunderson and Chad Michael Murray as Cal Jones. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

Frank and Sully shared a deeply personal journey, unaware that the storm was approaching. Sully confided in Frank about his fading memories, prompting Frank to promise a trip to a place that might help him remember. At their destination- an old fishing cabin that they used to frequent, Sully and Frank bared their souls to one another. Sully voiced his fears to Frank about not wanting to forget important moments, like Maggie’s first words. Frank, in turn, shared his own painful past experiences growing up half-white, half-Cree on a reservation, and how he was treated like an outcast. He revealed what happened in Alberta, that he wanted his mother’s regalia but his cousins had given it away, a story he admitted he hasn’t shared with Edna. Offering guidance, Frank encouraged Sully to use meditation to calm his troubled mind.

The episode added layers to Frank's character as he imparted wisdom about healing from within, even as the urgency to return home increased with the worsening storm. As Frank left to get the truck to head home, a critical moment unfolded when Sully found a bottle of alcohol. On the brink of giving in to old habits, he recalled the accident he caused involving Lola, leading to a cathartic confession to Frank about the incident, shedding light on the guilt he has been dealing with for all these years. Now that Sully’s secret is out, it is sure to send ripple effects throughout the citizens of the Crossing. When all is said and done, it will be interesting to see who stands by his side, and how Lola reacts once she learns that the man she considers to be like a father to her, is the one who negatively changed the trajectory of her life all those years ago.

As the storm escalated, chaos ensued throughout the Crossing. Sydney became anxious as she hadn't heard from Rob for hours, who was due to deliver a spare generator to the Outpost but failed to show. Simultaneously, Maggie visited war veteran Pete's camper to urge him to evacuate, only to find him in the midst of a PTSD episode, repeatedly expressing his need to return to his daughter. He reluctantly agreed to seek refuge at the Outpost with Maggie. However, their journey took a perilous turn when Molly, the dog, dashed off, leading Maggie and Pete into the storm in a risky search. Meanwhile, Rob, along with Finn and Rafe—who rescued them from a mud-stuck truck—arrived at the Outpost as Cal discovered Maggie was missing. He headed out with Rafe to find her. The episode reached a cliffhanger as Maggie, out in the storm, was struck by falling debris, leaving viewers in suspense as the screen faded to black. Show runner Roma Roth, named the master of cliffhangers, struck again. It will be difficult for viewers to wait a whole week to find out how this incident will impact Maggie and her unborn baby.

The episode effectively weaved both personal struggles and outside dangers, blending them into a narrative that expertly foreshadowed the tumultuous effects that the revelations made during the hour will have on every single character. This was a pivotal installment of the season that set the stage for the rocky roads that are ahead. Over to you, Sullivan’s Crossing fans! Do you think Maggie’s injury will cause her to lose the baby? What will Frank do now that he knows Sully’s secret? Will he encourage Sully to do the right thing and come clean? Or will he keep quiet to protect his friend? Share your thoughts below and follow me on X at @middleofcanada.

NCIS: Hawaii - Cancelled by CBS after 3 Seasons

So Help Me Todd - Faux-Bituary - Review: It's Time to Pay the Piper, Piper!

Tonight’s episode of So Help Me Todd truly showcased what a gem this series is and amplified the collective disappointment from viewers over its cancellation. This instalment blended comedy and drama in a way that made you really appreciate the uniqueness of the show, amidst a TV landscape that is suffocated with police procedurals. While it seems unlikely that CBS will reconsider their decision to cancel the show, it is not completely impossible, as seen with the recent un-cancellation of S.W.A.T. Viewers can only hope that a streaming service will recognize the show's brilliance, and offer it a new home and a second chance.

The episode started with Todd’s quirky business promotion—offering legal services at a discount with a side of breakfast tacos. While amusing, it set the tone for the financial desperation at the firm, especially for Margaret, who is grappling with the harsh realities of her desired position as a named partner. The introduction of a man mistakenly declared dead added a bizarre yet intriguing case of the week, giving Margaret a chance to shine in her role, despite being at her breaking point with trying to keep the firm afloat.

"Faux-Bituary” – SO HELP ME TODD. Pictured: Caitlin McCarthy as Ellen, Bernie Yao as Lewis, Kelly Metzger as Jean and Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret Wright. Photo: Michael Courtney/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Todd and Margaret visited a funeral home to investigate the mysterious case of Leo, who was mistakenly declared dead. The funeral director revealed he didn’t author Leo's obituary, hinting at a hacker's involvement. This discovery set off a comical chain of events, involving mistaken identities, that entangled all the key players at the firm. Adding to the chaos, Lyle returned to work high on nitrous oxide after a dental procedure, leading to hilarious antics with Todd. In his dazed state, Lyle accidentally revealed that Merritt Folding, the firm's elusive third partner, possesses a private server capable of accessing the dark web. Using Lyle’s uniquely arched fingerprint, which is rare among the population, they accessed the server.

Amidst this, a Scottish visitor, who happened to be Susan’s client, mistakenly identified Todd as Folding, prompting Todd to adopt a Scottish accent in a humorous improvisation. This misunderstanding spread, causing Margaret to think Susan has included Folding in her big client meeting instead of her. Meanwhile, Susan confused Margaret's client for her own. The mix-ups peaked when Margaret inadvertently struck a deal with a quirky salesperson, thinking he was Susan’s a major client, only to be informed she had agreed to sponsor disenfranchised lizards. The episode culminated as Todd and Lyle traced the hacker to Piper Harlow, who, in a twist, had hired someone to serve her prison sentence, deepening the mystery and showcasing the episode’s brilliant blend of humor and intrigue.

"Faux-Bituary” – SO HELP ME TODD. Pictured: Skylar Astin as Todd Wright, James Martinez as Leo Hart and Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret Wright. Photo: Michael Courtney/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved

The comedic element was plentiful in this episode, but the highlight was Todd impersonating Merritt Folding in a Scottish accent—a testament to the show’s creative humor and Todd’s quick thinking. This scene was not only hilarious but pivotal, leading to further developments in their investigation. As the plot unfolded with the twist of the real Piper Harlow hiring someone to serve her jail time, the show continued to balance its comedic and dramatic elements skillfully. The resolution of the case, revealing a tangled web of family secrets involving Ethan, provided a satisfactory conclusion to the mystery while touching on deeper themes of identity and the cost of keeping secrets. The narrative also paved the way for the return of Veronica, as it was discovered that the crooked prison guard who assisted Piper, was the same guard who also helped Veronica.

The personal dynamics between the Wright family were also part of the narrative. Margaret’s attempt to mend her relationship with Allison after catching her in bed with Dick Franks, added an emotional layer to the episode, as Allison revealed that she feels as though she is stuck in a state of flux. Margaret’s typical way of handling situations like this with Allison would be to shame and begrudge her, but this time she softened. She realized that Allison just needed her to be there and allow her time to come to her when needed. Margaret has shown tremendous character growth this season, and this is a prime example of that.

"Faux-Bituary” – SO HELP ME TODD. Pictured: Skylar Astin as Todd Wright and Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret Wright. Photo: Michael Courtney/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Overall, this episode was a solid reminder of the show’s strengths—its ability to seamlessly blend humor with heartfelt drama and weave complex, engaging stories that are both entertaining and thought-provoking. It’s a shame CBS didn’t see the potential for longevity, as So Help Me Todd offers a refreshing take in a saturated market. Hopefully, another network will take notice and give this show the second life it deserves.

Sullivan's Crossing - A Storm is Brewing - Review: Uncovered Secrets

Last week's cliffhanger left viewers eagerly anticipating the fate of Sully following his dramatic episode. This week’s installment of Sullivan's Crossing not only answered questions about Sully's health but also deepened existing tensions and introduced complex emotional layers against the backdrop of an impending literal storm in Nova Scotia.

The episode began on a tense note, as viewers learned that Sully had sustained a head injury, but was going to be okay. Lola confronted Maggie about keeping Sully's potential Alzheimer’s diagnosis from her, pushing Maggie to disclose the troubling possibility to Sully. His reaction—shaped by the painful memory of his father's struggle with the same disease—added a poignant layer to the narrative, shattering Maggie’s hopes that the prognosis could be a mistake.

"A Storm is Brewing” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Scott Patterson as Sully Sullivan. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

Frank and Edna grappled with the gravity of Sully's potential Alzheimer's diagnosis. Amidst this, Frank attempted to smudge Sully's hospital room, an act rooted in his Indigenous culture, which led to conflict when a nurse threatened to remove him for not adhering to hospital rules. The writer’s have always excelled with highlighting the ongoing societal challenges and narrow-minded attitudes towards Indigenous practices, and this episode really captured how much work still needs to be done towards reconciliation. Meanwhile, Frank shared with Edna that Sully's condition worsened after Maggie's return, and he suspected that Sully was drinking again.

Maggie spent the hour caught between going back to Boston to start her job, and wanting to be there for her father.. After requesting additional time from her boss, who reluctantly agreed to give her a week before considering other options, Maggie faced persuasive arguments from Andrew, who encouraged her return to Boston. This dilemma was further echoed through an encounter with a pregnant woman at the Crossing, who shared her own struggles balancing career and motherhood, causing Maggie to reflect on the challenges that she has yet to face, challenges that she has not been able to think about because she has been so wrapped up in caring for Sully.

“A Storm is Brewing” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan and Chad Michael Murray as Cal Jones. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

A poignant moment unfolded when Maggie discovered a box of memorabilia in Sully’s closet, including her baby photos and clippings of her career achievements, revealing that she was wrong in thinking that he didn’t care about her all these years. Maggie also uncovered Sully’s AA chips, realizing that her father was an alcoholic. She picked up the phone and questioned her mother, upset about why she kept this from her for all these years. The psychological damage done by her mother and step-father, to keep her away from her father and the Crossing, is slowly coming to light. The question remains, how much more will need to be uncovered before Maggie realizes the truth?

After Cal rescued Maggie from a tense situation with a camper, she confided in Cal about Sully's Alzheimer's diagnosis, and he assured her of the community’s support for Sully. Cal committed to staying at the Crossing to care for Sully, in an attempt to make things easier for Maggie, by giving her peace of mind about her impending return to Boston. This episode expertly intertwined Maggie's personal revelations with her father's hidden past, culminating in a realization triggered by a flashback of Sydney giving the pregnant camper vitamins. This, paired with the discovery of Sully’s alcoholism, allowed Maggie to come to a conclusion about what is really going on with Sully. As she raced to the hospital with Cal, Frank covertly helped Sully escape by setting off the smoke alarm.

Scott Patterson delivered a stellar performance in this episode, masterfully capturing the complex emotions of a man grappling with fear, frustration, and terror about his uncertain future. The poignant scene where his hospital roommate suffered a fatal cardiac arrest, showcased Patterson's ability to convey Sully’s heart wrenching distress. His portrayal deeply resonated with the viewers, allowing them to truly feel and empathize with his character’s ordeal.

The Shandon’s were also prominent in the episode. A mother from Finn’s baseball team shows an interest in Rob, prompting Cal to suggest he consider dating her. However, Rob hesitates, concerned that Finn might not be ready, leading Cal to question whether it is truly Finn who isn’t ready, or if it is Rob himself that isn’t. Rob confides in Cal about his past relationship with his wife and questions Cal’s long-term intentions at the Crossing. As Finn becomes increasingly frustrated with Rob’s work schedule, he lashes out. Rob, in response, asks his ineffective manager, Clover, for help with Finn. The situation escalates when Finn locks himself in the washroom at the diner, prompting Clover to call Sydney, who advises Rob to be more open and attentive to Finn’s needs. She tells him that he is failing to prioritize his relationship with his son, and that needs to change. Meanwhile, Sydney continued to give Rafe mixed signals. Rafe told Sydney that he wants to move beyond friendship, but she once again tells him that she is not ready, leaving Rafe feeling rejected and frustrated. At the end of the episode, Sydney appeared to make a choice about her future as she contacted an old modelling agent, asking to go back to work.

Finally, Lola was at Roy's house, sorting through his belongings, when she discovered a safe containing various documents. Inside, she discovered an envelope addressed to her that held photos of the accident where she was struck by a car while biking. Disturbed by the discovery, Lola takes the envelope to Cal's house, seeking his assistance to track down the person responsible for the hit-and-run to ensure they are held accountable.

This episode was yet another compelling instalment that tugged at the heartstrings while challenging viewers to think critically about cultural sensitivity and the meaning of family and the complexities that come with relationships. Over to you, Sullivan’s Crossing fans! What did you think of the episode? What do you think Maggie’s revelation about Sully’s diagnosis is? Will Cal discover that Sully was the one that hit Lola? So Help Me Todd - Is the Jury Out? - Review: Forget the Labels, Just be Yourself!

Tonight’s episode of So Help Me Todd, aptly titled, “Is the Jury Out?” Navigated the complex yet very current topics of societal expectations, personal identity and familial obligations. The hour was masterfully written, seamlessly intertwining Margaret’s case, Todd’s independent investigation and the familiar Wright family drama that viewers have come to expect. This episode was easily one of the most thought-provoking of the season.

From the outset, the episode re-introduced Judy from the coffee shop, portrayed by Heather Morris. Her flirtatious advances towards Todd once again went unreciprocated. Todd, striving to focus on honing his detective skills, focused on advice from his idol, Dick Franks- who was also his hospital roommate in an earlier episode. Todd is determined to maintain his newfound lone wolf persona and is attempting to avoid distractions at all cost, this includes Judy.

The legal drama unfolded with a poignant case, where a young girl, Clara, emerged as a late witness in a defamation lawsuit involving inappropriate conduct by a college professor. The case, riddled with ethical dilemmas and the fear of societal backlash, particularly with Clara’s strict Fundamentalist community, provided a rich opportunity to explore the consequences of speaking out against wrongdoing. Clara’s struggle and eventual decision to testify, despite severe personal risks, added depth to the plot, showcasing her bravery and the impact that the truth has.

Back at Margaret's home, viewers were treated to lighter moments during family dinner, which was full of typical banter that we have come to expect from the Wright family, and a humorous misfire during a gender reveal - Lawrence accidentally revealed green confetti, clearly having purchased the wrong balloon. Thankfully, Clem was there to adorably announce that she is having a baby brother.

Parallel to the courtroom drama, the episode delved deep into the very current topic of personal identity. Todd was roped into a morally questionable investigation by Lawrence, tasked to find out if a local judge is gay. This narrative was skillfully woven with comedic, yet revealing moments, especially during a costume party where truths were unmasked both literally and metaphorically. This subplot touched on issues of privacy and ethics, especially since Lawrence was planning to block the judge’s bid to be on the supreme court, if he was found out to be gay. Lawrence felt pressured by his constituents, as there are already 3 gay judges on the court and adding another propelled fears that the court would “push the gay agenda.” The topic of personal identity was explored with integrity, as Lawrence struggled with his own gender identity, questioning the necessity and impact of societal labels. Ultimately, the episode concluded on a reflective note with Lawrence affirming the beauty of people embracing their identity, regardless of societal expectations.

A significant twist occurred when Allison was caught in bed with Todd’s idol, Dick Franks, shattering Todd’s perceptions of him. This revelation was a critical turning point for Todd, as it forced him to challenge his newfound beliefs and extend an olive branch to Judy, finally asking her out on a date. Todd’s character growth was prominently displayed in this episode, highlighted by the scene where Lawrence unwittingly drank several jell-o shots at the costume party, and Todd, along with Margaret, discovered Allison in bed with Dick Franks as they were caring for a drunken Lawrence. Todd was the voice of reason amidst the chaos, seemingly the only Wright sibling with a level head. This shift from the easily distracted screw-up to a more focused and empathetic person, marked a significant evolution in Todd’s character.

"Is the Jury Out?” – SO HELP ME TODD. Pictured: Matthew Wilkas as Lawrence Wright, Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret Wright, Kathryn Greenwood as Patty and Skylar Astin as Todd Wright. Photo: Michael Courtney/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved

A highlight of this episode was the return of Patty, played by Kathryn Greenwood. Her comedic, well-timed one-liners were hilarious. The scene with her attempting to woo the judge with Todd in her ear coaching her every move, was nothing short of comedy gold.

One of the standout qualities of the show is its courageous approach to tackling controversial topics with a level-headed and honest perspective. The news that the show might be facing cancellation is quite disappointing. In today’s television landscape, genuinely family-friendly, feel-good dramas are a rarity. We need more shows like So Help Me Todd, not less. Hopefully CBS recognizes the unique value of the series and opts to renew it for another season. What are your thoughts, Todd fans? What did you think of the episode? Which guest-star were you happiest to see grace our screens tonight? Share your thoughts below and engage with me on X at @middleofcanada.

Sullivan's Crossing - Guilt Trip - Review: Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes

The much-anticipated second season of “Sullivan’s Crossing” kicked off tonight, ushering in a tidal wave of change following a finale that left us all on the edge of our seats. The premiere did not disappoint, revealing that life at Sullivan’s Crossing has been permanently altered by the events of last season.

The opening scene was a heart stopper- Maggie, in a state of panic and heartbreak, rushed into the hospital to find her father recovering from his stroke. She apologized at his bedside and tension mounted as Lola, laying in wait at Sully’s bedside, attacked Maggie about her absence during Sully’s stroke. Meanwhile, Cal arrived seeking a moment to talk, but Maggie dismissed him, still upset that he left without saying goodbye. Cal asked Sully why Maggie was giving him the cold shoulder, and he revealed that Maggie never found his note and assumed he left without saying anything to her.

“Guilt Trip” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Scott Patterson as Sully Sullivan. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

Complicating matters, Sully’s doctor expressed concern to Maggie over her father’s worsening symptoms of agitation and memory loss, suspecting that something more may be going on. Maggie grappled with this as she struggled with her tumultuous feelings. She feels guilt for accepting the job in Boston and spoke with Frank about her feelings. He is always the perfect voice of calm and reason. He told her that when Maggie’s mother took her away from Sully, it destroyed him. Maggie shared how her anger just prior to Sully’s stroke has filled her with immense guilt, mirroring Frank’s own regrets about leaving Sully and travelling to Alberta despite knowing Sully was struggling. In a heart to heart with Sydney, Maggie confided that she is pregnant and is contemplating getting back together with Andrew. She knows firsthand what it is like to grow up without a father, and she does not want that for her child. Sydney assured Maggie that she is strong enough to raise the baby on her own, but Maggie is always following her head instead of her heart and getting back together with the father of her child is the choice that makes the most sense, regardless of if it is what she truly wants or not.

“Guilt Trip” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan and Tom Jackson as Frank Cranebear. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

Adding to the immense pressure Maggie is already facing, her step-father, Walter, tried to force her to come back to Boston, stating that it is important for her to prioritize her career. Cal finally cleared the air with Maggie, and was about to tell her that he wants to start a future with her, but before he could finish, she cut him off and told him that she is going back to Boston and likely reuniting with Andrew. While Cal expressed happiness for her choice, he was obviously hurt and confused by Maggie’s decision. Cal has finally put his past behind him and is ready to find love with Maggie, but unless she can find a way to follow her heart instead of doing what she perceives is right, they don’t stand a chance.

In the episode’s final moments, a somber revelation unfolded as Sully’s doctor informed Maggie that he has Alzheimer’s disease. As if this news weren’t distressing enough, the doctor was urgently called to assist Sully. Rushing to see what happened, Maggie watched in horror as her father lay on the hospital floor, bleeding from a head injury. Amid the personal challenges faced by Sully and Maggie, Sullivan’s Crossing is still facing foreclosure. Frank and Edna noticed two men surveying the property. Upon inquiring about what they were doing, one of the men revealed that he owns the golf course across the lake and is interested in purchasing Sullivan’s Crossing.

“Guilt Trip” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan and Chad Michael Murray as Cal Jones. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

Maggie faces a tough decision: return to Boston to concentrate on her career and reunite with Andrew to raise their child, or remain at Sullivan’s Crossing to care for Sully and forget what she thinks is right and move forward with Cal instead. It is difficult to believe that Maggie would just abandon Sully in his time of need, especially with the fact that he could lose his legacy on top of everything else he is facing. Maggie is grappling with so many heavy issues and looming choices, and her tendency to base decisions on others feelings, rather than her own, complicates things. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for her to prioritize her own happiness. Hopefully she will come to see this and realize what is most important to her.

The other narrative’s in tonight’s episode were also compelling. Frank and Edna discussed their trip to Alberta, which Edna revealed turned sour due to Frank’s standoffish behaviour toward his family, effectively ruining the vacation. Edna accused Frank of being stubborn and refusing to reconcile with his past. He was adamant that his behaviour was justified due to what his family put him through. It wasn’t revealed what this was just yet, but hopefully viewers will learn more about Frank’s past and what led him and Edna to the Crossing as the season progresses. Meanwhile, Sydney’s new living arrangement with Rafe is proving to be uncomfortable. Although Rafe has promised to keep things platonic, his unresolved feelings for Sydney complicate things. Rob and Sydney’s relationship also remains strained and despite his efforts to make amends, she continues to be standoffish, clinging to her hurt feelings. The theme of reconciling with the past weaves through so many narratives including Sydney’s. Rob and Sydney need each other and the sooner she can come to terms with what occurred in New York, the sooner she can forgive Rob and work towards shaping her future. Elsewhere, Jackson and his father were touring universities across Canada, marking a new chapter as the divorce is now finalized.

“Guilt Trip” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Lindura as Sydney Shandon and Dakota Taylor as Rafe Vadas. Photo: Bell Media ©2024. All Rights Reserved.

It is clear that this is going to be an intense season, filled with heartbreak and life-changing decisions. The writer’s excel at developing the characters’ arcs in a way that deeply resonates with viewers and engages them. Viewers genuinely care about the characters on the show and empathize with their experiences. In today’s TV landscape, it is rare for a show to capture the human experience in a genuine and relatable way and the team behind Sullivan’s Crossing should be commended for their ability to do this with every single episode.

Waiting for the next episode will likely prove unbearable, am I right, Sullivan’s Crossing fans? How did you feel about the episode? What do you think Maggie will decide to do? Will Sully be able to come to terms with his diagnosis? Share your thoughts below and engage with me on X @middleofcanada.

Sullivan's Crossing - Season 2 - Preview: The Best Journey Takes You Home

Fresh off the heels of a massively successful first season, Sullivan’s Crossing returns for a second season this Sunday on the CTV network in Canada. Sadly, our neighbours to the south will have to wait quite a bit longer as the CW will likely air the second season as part of its Fall lineup.

The show’s enormous success can be attributed to several things. The series boasts an all-star cast featuring Chad Michael Murray and Scott Patterson, who are fan favourites from their iconic roles on “One Tree Hill" and “Gilmore Girls" respectively. Canadian sweetheart, Morgan Kohan, brings a local feel to the production. This beloved trio helps bring to life a heartwarming drama that is a breath of fresh air in today’s television landscape. Sullivan’s Crossing captivates viewers with its deep exploration of redemption and reconciliation. It thoughtfully addresses the relatable themes of trauma and hardship, guiding its characters - and its viewers - through the process of overcoming obstacles, uncovering truths and forging paths toward forgiveness.

Where We Left Off...

In season 1, neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan, portrayed by Kohan, returns to Sullivan’s Crossing following a medical malpractice lawsuit. The Crossing, owned by her father Sully - played by Patterson - is a scenic campground nestled in the stunning landscapes of Nova Scotia, Canada. Sullivan’s Crossing is steeped in Maggie’s personal history, filled with both cherished and painful memories. Her father’s battle with alcoholism led to his separation from Maggie’s mother, Phoebe, portrayed by Lynda Boyd, when Maggie was just a child. The last image Maggie holds from that time is of her mother pulling her away from her heartbroken father, as they left for a fresh start in Boston. Now, as an adult, Maggie has a successful career and is in a relationship with fellow doctor Andrew, played by Canadian actor Allan Hawco. Maggie’s life in Boston appears picture perfect, but it quickly becomes clear that she isn’t genuinely happy. Her life has largely been dictated by her mother and step-father, and although Andrew is the ideal mate according to her mother, Maggie isn’t truly in love with him.

"Sins of the Father” – SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan, Lynda Boyd as Phoebe Lancaster, Allan Hawco as Andrew Mathews, Peter Outerbridge as Walter Lancaster. Photo: Bell Media ©2023. All Rights Reserved.

During her time at Sullivan’s Crossing, Maggie encounters Cal Jones, portrayed by the enigmatic Murray. Cal is a charismatic, empathetic nomad seeking solace after his wife’s death. Maggie feels an immediate pull towards Cal, which stirs internal conflict as she grapples with her emerging feelings for him and her commitment to Andrew. Despite her heart’s desires, Maggie remains bound by what she believes others expect of her, and hesitates to veer off course. Communication is a struggle between Maggie and her estranged father, Sully, an issue that was weaved throughout the season. Maggie harbors unresolved feelings of abandonment and resentment towards him and Sully can never seem to find the right words to make up for the fact that he was absent for most of Maggie’s life. Adding to Maggie’s frustration, is having to witness the close bond between Sully and Lola, portrayed by Amalia Williamson- a relationship that Maggie always desired to have with her father. To make matters worse, Lola appears to have it out for Maggie, and takes pleasure in flaunting her connection with Sully in Maggie’s face. Meanwhile, Sully faced his own crisis as financial troubles threatened to close Sullivan’s Crossing, driving him back to alcohol despite being sober for several years.

“Detours” - SULLIVAN’S CROSSING. Pictured: Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan and Scott Patterson as Sully Sullivan. Photo: Bell Media ©2023. All Rights Reserved.

As Maggie and Cal’s connection deepened, a hostile visit from Andrew finally forced Maggie’s hand and she ended things with him. The break-up drew Maggie to Cal even further and their burgeoning feelings finally culminated in a kiss. Before the two could discuss things, Maggie returned to Boston to confront her trial, which was eventually dismissed. Cal left the Crossing to scatter his wife’s ashes, leaving behind a note for Maggie, which Lola intercepted, misleading Maggie into thinking Cal left without saying goodbye. In the season finale, emotions peaked as Maggie confronted Sully, accusing him of abandoning her. She also discovered that she is pregnant with Andrew’s baby. In a poignant flashback, Sully recalled the day Maggie left for Boston. In his drunken state, he accidentally struck Lola who was on a bicycle with his car, leading to her lengthy rehabilitation. This revelation added a layer of tragic complexity to the already tumultuous relationships.

Another highlight of the show is the dynamic ensemble cast, with each character bringing their own unique charm and depth. Frank and Edna, played by Tom Jackson and Andrea Menard, help run the Crossing alongside Sully. Their beautiful relationship is a pure example of true love and their wisdom and their innate wisdom and kindness provides the perfect balance to keep Sully grounded and to help guide Maggie towards true happiness. The sibling duo of Rob and Sydney, portrayed by Reid Price and Lindura, exemplifies a supportive and caring brother-sister relationship. Rob, as a single parent running a business, has very little time to devote to his son, and Sydney steps up significantly to be there for him, all while harboring a secret about her own troubled past that remains unknown by viewers to this point. By season’s end, Sydney, feeling she may have overstayed her welcome, moved out of Rob’s house and in with firefighter Rafe, played by Dakota Taylor, who has feelings for her, but she has yet to fully let him in. Adding to the cast are Connie, Tom and their son, Jackson, who find themselves tangled in the emotional challenges of a divorce, with Jackson feeling caught in the middle and pressured to meet his father’s expectations.

What can Viewers Expect in Season 2?

In a recent interview with Bell Media, showrunner Roma Roth, assured fans that season 2 of the series would be packed with even more emotion, drama and cliffhangers. The season opens mere hours after Maggie discovers that her father suffered a stroke. Racked with guilt over their last encounter with each other, Maggie resolves to remain at the Crossing to care for Sully. Concern deepens as Sully’s doctor suspects his symptoms might indicate a more serious condition and orders additional tests. Meanwhile, Sully struggles with a nagging sense that he has forgotten something important - clearly he has forgotten what he did to Lola and it will be intriguing to see if, upon remembering, he decides to continue concealing the secret or if he will choose to confront and accept the repercussion of his actions.

Unable to escape to Boston and leave her troubles behind, Maggie is forced to confront her mixed feelings about her father and address her deepening feelings for Cal. The season kicks off with Maggie feeling betrayed by Cal’s abrupt departure without a goodbye, prompting her to keep her distance. One of the pictures for the episode portrays Cal appearing to be pleading with Maggie. Hopefully the two are able to have an honest conversation of what occurred, and Cal can reveal what he wrote in his letter to her, in person. However, there is still a major roadblock for these two- Maggie’s pregnancy. She initially chooses to keep it a secret while planning to return to Boston once her father recovers. How will she reveal the news to Cal? Will she do what her head is telling her is right- get back together with Andrew and raise their child together? Or will she finally follow her heart and choose to be with Cal, should he choose to accept her child?

Finally, Maggie’s plans to return to Boston are delayed when she learns that the Crossing is up for auction. She is determined to help save her father’s legacy and in doing so, will she begin to prioritize what really matters to her? Or will she continue down the path of living the life that she feels is expected of her?

The answers to these questions and more is not far off! Sullivan's Crossing premieres this Sunday, April 14th at 9:00 p.m. EST/8:00 p.m. CST on CTV Canada. Stay tuned for my review, dropping shortly after the episode airs. Follow me on X @middleofcanada to discuss all things TV!

So Help Me Todd - End on a High Note - Review: Cuts Like a Knife

After a long hiatus, So Help Me Todd returned tonight with an enthralling episode, filled with drama for the main characters, both professionally and personally. Tension hit a high note at an opera event that twisted into a murder mystery, showcasing the clever blend of humour and drama that this show does so well. The episode kicked off with a chilling scene as someone sneakily switched out a prop knife, setting the stage for disaster amidst the glitz and glamour of the opera.

The Wright family’s drama initially took centre stage at the opera, where tensions ran high even before the curtain lifted. Margaret was distraught, shedding tears over the firm's financial turmoil that forced her to let go of three more employees. Adding to the tension, Allison, still stuck in her rut, arrived at the opera clad in casual jeans and an “I hate Mondays” T-shirt, leaving Margaret horrified. Todd quickly stepped in to diffuse the situation, always the peacemaker.

The opera soon pre–occupied the Wright’s when it took a dark turn as Jacqueline, Lyle’s mother and lead performer, mistakenly used the knife that was replaced backstage as a prop, leading to the death of another performer. As suspicions loomed over Jacqueline, her larger than life persona and inflated ego, threatened to incriminate her, making Margaret’s job as her attorney, extremely difficult.

The episode deepened with another twist- the autopsy revealed that the victim did not die from the stabbing, but from poison administered through the knife, implicating Jacqueline further. Yet, the plot thickened with the constant appearance of Timothy, the weather man from a previous episode, who became a suspect due to his suspiciously timed presence. After some clever thinking by Todd, suggesting they relive the night through the perspective of those in attendance, the real murderer is discovered and Jacqueline is exonerated.

Although the murder mystery was the main narrative, family dynamics were explored beautifully throughout the episode, particularly through Lyle’s relationship with his difficult mother and Todd’s frustrations with Allison overstaying her welcome at his apartment. Lyle’s relationship with his mother, Jacqueline, is extremely fractured. She openly disparaged him in front of Margaret and Todd, criticizing his choice to become a detective over pursuing a career as a cellist. Her patronizing nature leaves Lyle desperate for her acceptance, yet no matter how hard he tries, he simply cannot meet the incredibly high standards that Jacqueline has set for him. While it is difficult to imagine that a huge personality like Jacqueline could be Lyle’s mother, their dynamic shed light into his past and provided backstory to his character that viewers have been longing for.

The episode drew a brilliant parallel between Lyle’s challenging relationship with his mother and Margaret’s own relationship with Todd. Margaret, much like Jacqueline, often finds herself disappointed in Todd’s mishaps, constantly wanting him to do better. During a heartfelt conversation with Lyle, Margaret empathized with him and acknowledged that just as his mother wants the best for him, she harbours the same aspirations for Todd. This moment of reflection highlighted the complex dynamics of expectations woven through both relationships.

Todd’s relationship with Allison was also a focus throughout the episode. Now established on his own, Todd is tired of Allison staying at his apartment, seemingly forgetting the years he spent living in her garage during his own tough times. Their dinner table argument, simultaneous with Lyle’s clash with his mother, underscored the deep-rooted issues within both families. By the episode's end, Allison opened up to Todd about her fear of moving forward. She expressed a willingness to gradually work through her apprehension with his support, and he agreed to be there for her.

In the ongoing narrative of Beverly’s shady grooming of Susan, Margaret was shocked to see Susan hosting clients at the opera with Beverly, since she and Beverly went together the year prior. It became clear to Margaret that Beverly is manipulating Susan against her. Beverly even arranges for Susan to be featured in a “40 under 40” magazine spread, and throws Margaret not promoting Susan in her face, fully aware that the firm cannot afford to promote her. Towards the episode's end, Margaret attempts to reach out to Susan, who claims that Beverly has been more of a mentor to her than Margaret ever was. Her words clearly cut Margaret like a knife, much like the literal knife killed the actress at the opera. This sets the stage for a compelling continuation, as viewers wait to see Beverly’s ultimate intentions and which side Susan will choose.

Overall, tonight’s episode masterfully balanced suspense with emotional depth, all while sprinkling in the right amount of humour. After such a long break since the last episode aired, the show came back with a bang, hopefully reigning in the strong viewership it had, prior to the hiatus. Your turn, Todd fans! What did you think of tonight’s episode? Were you happy to learn more about Lyle? What do you think Beverly’s endgame is with Susan?
