Supernatural - Episode 6.19 - Mommy Dearest - Recap

Hello, everyone. IT'S FRIDAY, FRIDA...Woah, got possessed there for a second, sorry. And it's not even Friday anymore. Seriously, me, what gives? Anyway, it's that time of the week again. And boy, what a great episode it was. Angels, demons, monsters - You want it, it had it. So let's get started!

P.S the site where I get screen caps is down or something, and I can't find them anywhere and am too lazy to upload some myself, so you'll have to without them for now. Sorry..

No more Cas. From now on, it's Cass.

We start with Eve, going to a bar (I don't know if her vessel is a minor or not, but she's probably old enough in monster years). On the way in, she caresses some guy (Afro Guy, for the matter). Not a very normal thing to do to a complete stranger. Especially if the person caressing is the mother of all creatures. But back to him later. She walks in the bar and starts caressing more people (Even kissing a lucky one). Shortly after, all hell breaks loose. People start attacking, fighting and biting each other. Not your typical bar brawl.

Meanwhile, in Bobby's basement (I guess) Dean makes salt bullets, with a little pinch of Phoenix ash. Since the ash doesn't affect him, he doubts it will affect Eve, but once again, Sam is the voice of reason.

"Maybe it's like iron or silver, you know? Hurts them, not us"

They should listen to Sam more. Anyway, they decide that the weapon, affective or not, is useless if they don't have Eve's location. So they decide to get some divine assistance. Sam and Bobby think it's best Dean calls Cas (Seems legit, since Cas did say they have a better connection or something). But Dean isn't very sure.

"It's not like Cas lives in my ass, the dude's busy"

*Cas appears behind him*

"Cas, get out of my ass!"

Gotta love Dean and Cas humor. It appears Eve somehow went off the angel grid, so Cas is also clueless about her where...abouts. Samwise suggests they get an inside monster to lead them to Eve. Don't worry, they won't start looking for a sympathetic monster for the entire episode. They'll just have Cas fetch an old one.

Lenore, The Friendly Vampire (BTW, Forget Cass. It's 'Smitey McSmiterton' From Now On)

Welcome back, Amber Benson! I wondered why they didn't show her at the recap. Guess they didn't wanna ruin the surprise. Good call. Anyway, they remind us now who she is- A vampire who preferred live hamburgers over human flesh. Being a monster, they assume she has some connection with Eve, which she says she does, and they ask her to tell them where she is. After some arguing she agrees, but asks them to kill her. It appears she's given in to her vampire instincts and killed (Or turned) a human, and she doesn't wanna do it again. Sam apparently was gonna try and talk her out of it, bus Smitey doesn't have time for that crap, so he ganks her himself.

It's been quite obvious since the previous episode, that Smitey has done some drastic thing, and is now on a dark path. This is another hint of that, 'cause he doesn't normally smite people like that. I really don't wanna see Smitey go dark side. Soul-less Sam was enough, we don't need a douche angel. Plus, the last thing Sam and Dean need is another enemy, especially Smitey. Hope he lightens up by the season's end.

Bobby Can't Cope With The 21st Century. But He Can Still Fool Sheriffs.

What? Oh, they're telling me this Smitey thing is annoying, and I need to call him Cas again. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Anyway, Cas zaps the trio to Pleasantville (Oregon, if you insist), where Big Momma is lurking (And also knows they're coming, because apparently every monster is like a video camera to her).

They go to the diner to investigate, where Bobby is puzzled by and Ipad. Well no wonder, he sits in his house all day, or goes hunting. Guy needs to check out some Apple stores. He finds out a doctor called the CDC about some weird illness, and also finds the weirdly-ill patient's details. (Ed? Nah, I'm sticking with Afro Guy). This not-much-of-a-lead is followed by some worse news: Apparently, Eve's presence in the town drains Cas's angel juice.

"Great, 'cause without your powers, you're just a baby in a trench coat"

Did I miss something? What's with all the negativity between Dean and Cas? Maybe it's because he's being so hush-hush about the war in heaven. Or because last week he tried to send his secretary to help them. Or because he's busy with the war, and they keep calling him down. You know what, scratch that, I kinda get why he's pissed.

Dean and Cas go to look for the doc, and find out he's probably missing. There goes the not-much-of-a-lead. But wait! They search near his office, and find Afro Guy dead and gooey.

Meanwhile, Sam and Bobby search the doc's house, and find only a picture of his family. On the way out, they run into a sheriff, but Bobby talks their way out of trouble. Thank god for fake FBI badges.

Either Afro Is Retro, Or...

The gang meets up at Afro Guy's house, where they see him...standing at the window. Wait, wasn't he dead at the doc's office? Weird indeed. Sam and Dean decide to check it out, while Bobby and Cas (Bostiel? Cabby?) Wait outside, and are ordered to shoot any weird thing.

"I'm fairly unpracticed with firearms"

Come to think about it, it's a good point. This isn't the first time Cas loses his mojo, and might not be the last. They might wanna have some plan B for him, for such cases. Anyway, Dean makes another baby comment, and they go in the house...And find Afro Guy's twins. Oh wait, he doesn't have any. Shape shifters? probably. But they're all dead. Except one! They try to question him about Eve, but soon enough he joins his Shifter brothers in death. (BTW, Anyone else had a Pilot flashback when he said 'girl in white'? I did).

*A Clever Bar\Monster Pun*

I Think that's my most creative title yet. Anyway, the guys go a bar Afro Guy mentioned, and find out there was one hell of a party there. But everyone ended up dead. Happens. Not only are they dead, they're some new kind of monster- Vampires with a Wraith spike. Since they discovered them, Dean decides to name them. Say hello to Jefferson Starships (Hey, that's Two monsters Dean named now, counting Khan Worm). Suddenly, the cops show up. Those party-poopers. Dean manages to hide, and watches Sam, Bobby and Cas get arrested.

On the way to the lock-up, Sam realizes the cops are actually Jefferson Starships. (Okay, correction, they are Shape shifting Vampires with a Wraith spike. Now that's just scary).

Those silly Shifters. You'd think after all those years, they would've learned not to be in places with CCTV...

Prisoners Of War

Anyway, Dean comes to the rescue, and they kill them all. except one. Someone's gotta get waterboarded. But he's a tough nut, and won't talk. The brothers here a suspicious sound, and go check it out. They find out that the doc's Two sons are locked up. They test them for Starshipness, and release them.

They want to drive the boys to their uncle, but Cas insists finding Eve is priority number 1. Dean disagrees, and he and Sam go on their way. Cas asks for 5 minutes with their captive, which is strange, 'cause he can't do to him anything Bobby can't, since he has no powers. But after something that sounds painful and eventually a decapitation, they get Eve's coordinates.

Oh, irony, how cruel are thee. Eve's location is the very diner they went to when they got there. (Now that I think about it, an unseen waitress spoke to them in that scene. That was probably her. But we will never know). Dean suggests same plan as before- He and Sam go in, Cas & Bobby will stay outside as backup.

"Well, at least it's not complicated"

You got it, Bobby.

Family Dinner

The boys walk in and find out the diner's filled with Starships. They're about to leave, but just then Eve greets them (Though her name-tag reads Angela). Apparently, Mommy's pissed that her monster kids were kidnapped and tortured (My first thought was the Campbells, but they worked for Crowley, so it's kinda the same thing). And for Sam and Dean to sympathize with her care, she shifts into...Their mom!

Welcome back, Samantha Smith. That's the second not-seen-for-a-while Samantha we get in 3 episodes (With Samantha Ferris). Great success! Anyway, Eve tells them that...Crowley lives! But how? didn't Cas deep-fry a while back? The plot thickens. Apparently, Crowley's after the souls, because they're some kind of "nuclear reactors". But what does he need them for? Two eps back, Atropos mentioned some War Machine. Assuming they're not talking about Don Cheadle, I assume it's some big-ass angel weapon. But what does it have to do with Crowley? Anyone picking up on the bread crumbs yet?

Eve tells them she decided to fight back, so she's gonna turn the whole world into monsters. Decent plan. She says all those Creepy Crawlers the boys ran into are "Beta tests" to find the perfect monster for the job, which she did. It's the doc's little kid! Who's now a Starship, and turns his brother into one too!

A Killer Hickey

Eve offers the boy a deal - They track down Crowley for her, and she spares them. Sounds good to me. But Dean refuses. After working for Crowley all these months, he doesn't want a monster boss next. Eve orders to bring in Bobby and Cas. So much for plan B

Dean still refuses, and Eve bites him. Poor Dean. That's the second time this season he's being turned...Or is it? Eve staggers back, and turns into her normal vessel. Then she starts dying. Apparently Dean took a shot of Vodka and Phoenix ash earlier (He should also name that drink), so Eve starts melting and imploding, and she crumbles to the ground and...Dies? If that's the case, I'll be very disappointed. I was counting on her as a baddy for season 7! I hope she's 'dead' like Crowley was until now.

The Trouble With Angels

Cas gets his groove back, and does his light-of-death thing. Dean tells him about the monster boy, and they zap to the house, only to find out both boys are dead. And killed by demons, no less. Cas is shocked, and poofs away to investigate.

The gang starts to question how Cas messed up with killing Crowley. Bobby and Sam look pretty sure that he isn't the same anymore, but surprisingly Dean, who was cold towards Cas for the entire episode, refuses to believe it. Sam reluctantly agrees, probably just to avoid an argument for now.

But Bobby and Sam DO have a point, 'cause turns out....DUN DUN DUNNNNNN! The King is alive and kicking (Crowley, not Elvis. Well, maybe him too, depends on what you believe) and Cas is working with him! What is wrong the world?! Why, Cas, why?

Sorry, had a melodramatic outburst. Anyway, THE END.

This episode was great. It had all the characters, and interesting story, a few twists and turns, and some good lines. But I really don't like Cas going dark side.

I give it 9.5 ash-filled shotgun rounds out of 10.

Now that Eve's presumably dead, what will be in the last 3 episodes? According to the summaries, there'll be Two plots- The whole Cas-Crowley-war at heaven thing, and the Great Wall of Sam. Though I really do hope Eve returns somehow. 'Cause to be honest, that was kind of lame way to finish her off.

See ya next week, McSmitertons!

Fox Shelves MacFarlane's 'Animation Domination' Night

Seth MacFarlane has rarely shied from controversial topics or from poking fun at things other people might find insensitive. FOX, on the other hand, has a threshold.

In light of the weather events that raged across the American South this week, leaving a swath of destruction and hundreds of casualties in their wake, FOX has quietly shelved this Sunday's (May 1) three-episode "American Dad"/"The Cleveland Show"/"Family Guy" crossover.

The Animation Domination crossover, which had been promoted as unprecedented early this week, was set against the backdrop of a hurricane hitting Stoolbend, Quahog and Langley Falls.

For reasons entirely self-evident, FOX has decided that this may not have been the most appropriate weekend to showcase storm-set comedy.

A trio of repeats are now slated in place of the crossover. It's hard to imagine FOX shelving the three original episodes permanently, but as of now, no official rescheduling has occurred.

Justified - Episode 2.12 - Reckoning - Recap and Review

Check out my recap of and thoughts on tonight's Justified, entitled "Reckoning," here. Don't forget that next week is the second season finale!

Raising Hope - Episode 1.19 - Sleep Training - Recap

Their friends Sylvia and Donovan from "Romeo and Romeo" are getting rid of stuff. Burt and Virginia are picking out what they want. When Burt complained about Hope crying all night, they suggest sleep training. Burt buys the book they recommended.

Another thing they have in common with the Chances, Sylvia does the nose thing to Donovan too when he gets into a snit.

Jimmy wasn't sure if he wants to let Hope cry in her crib all night, until his parents called him a 'wuss'. He was insecure about everything. (Cue flashback.) Apparently, Maw Maw threatened little Jimmy with Doghead Man. Convinced that it's a good idea, he consents to the sleep training, but only if Burt did it.
"It will kill me to hear her cry that much."

Watch Jimmy's hand gesture when he says that. Makes him look more like a mom than a dad.

Later when Jimmy and Zoey are on a date at art class, he finds out just how wild she really is when she drops robe to pose for the class. It was proof how uptight he was, when he tried to contain her by drawing a bikini on his naked girlfriend.

So funny to see Hope turn too when everyone turned to look at the picture.

Jimmy thinks he's man enough to handle another date with Zoey, that is until he drank some Incan tea and began tripping himself senseless, to the point of seeing Hope on jars of mushed peas and carrots.

Dad, you are high. Better to call your mommy. (In a man's voice?)

Meanwhile, Burt wasn't having an easy time of it helping Hope achieve an emotional conditioning breakthrough where she'd be comfortable and self-soothing. It doesn't help when Virginia and Maw Maw couldn't leave the baby alone.

Maw Maw wanted to take batteries out of Hope's back.

When Maw Maw was lucid enough (6 out 10), she let Virginia know that Wilfred tried to sleep train Virginia too but gave up, because she didn't support him. It didn't work anyway. Virginia was too clingy. She's still living in her house.

Virginia finds out later about Burt success with Hope. So when Jimmy, in his drug-addled state, called home for help, she agreed with Burt to let Jimmy over come his own demons. Jimmy took the first step by giving Barney (Doghead man to him) the punch in the face he wanted for joining Frank's fight club.

Jimmy confided in Sabrina, about breaking up with Zoey. She was a crazy, inconsiderate, drug-addicted tramp, but still a nice girl.

More goodies:

Burt thinking he could see what's under the drawing's bikini by erasing it off.

Jimmy weird out about to talk to girl about her guy. Wyatt uses a body shaving kit.

Jimmy is not not messed up.

"Watch Wizard of Oz and listen to Dark Side of the Moon at the same time." Oddly enough I know what this means. I have Pink Floyd's full-length presentation of this song, perfectly synchronized with MGM's classic movie. I still have to watch it though.

Survivor Redemption Island, Episode 11: "Come On Baby, Let's Do The Twist."

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of Survivor Redemption Island - Episode 11.

We all know that Ometepe's master plan is to get rid of the final two members of Zapatera. Would they achieve that goal this week? Let's find out.

My Random Thoughts:

- Previously on...Survivor. We open with a camera shot of an eagle/hawk, proving my theory from last week about Coach. A reminder that Andrea blindsided Matt, Phillip and Steve went at it, Julie is a shorts thief, and that Ralph and Steve's only shot to win is to “hope to find a crack in the Ometepe alliance.” I seriously hate these segments now, because it's just conditioning the viewers to think what they want us to think so that their manufactured drama can seem legit. Let's just go back to factual recaps, please.

-At camp, Steve offered the olive branch to Phillip, who appeared to accept the apology, but later referred to it as disingenuous (he didn't use that word, but that's what he meant, so I'll save you from having to interpret his Phillip-ese dialect) and self-serving. I found it very genuine, but after last week, I'm not surprised Phillip responded that way.

Rob summed up the overall Phillip picture "As long as he keeps up his stupid antics, he’ll be coming with me all the way to the final."

- As Ralph and Steve sat at camp eating what must assuredly be the last of their batch of rotten fish, the "last of the Zapatera", as they referred to themselves, wondered where 'numbnuts" was. Numbnuts of course, was Phillip, and despite their hopes that he was jumping into a hole somewhere (what is this? a grammar school playground?), he was instead off on a mission to find his missing shorts.

On a side note, I never understood why 'numbnuts' was an insult. If you have no feeling in your testicles, does that make you a bad person? Much like I never understood why "He thinks he's the cat's ass" meant someone who feels superior. If I was "the cat's ass", I sure as hell wouldn't be proud of it. I'd be more like, "Why the hell do I have to be the cat's ass?"

But back to Phillip's quest for his wayward shorts, which was prompted by a premonition he had from his grandfather yet again. Upon digging at the 2nd suspected rock, he found the shorts, and went on one of his spectacular rants, saying "don't mess with the Undercover Specialist", and (incorrectly) quoting Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, hollering "You can't STAND the truth!" (How much different would that scene have been? Honestly?)
My favourite, though, was when he declared "You can't pull the wool over the Undercover Specialist." Not over his eyes, mind you, just over the whole Undercover Specialist. Picture it, will you? Undercover Agent being completely covered over in wool? How would you explain that to your superiors?

And did he really brag about finding the shorts with "no clue, nothing"? Julie not only owned up to it at the last Tribal Council, but then told him that she buried them and put a big rock on top. Why not just draw him a map?

- At Redemption (Non) Island, Matt's faith has reached its breaking point, he's ready to give up, he's missing his family, and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........

Oh, sorry, I dozed off there describing that.

Yada, yada, yada, "God wants me here." No he doesn't. Lather, rinse, repeat.
On to the (Non) Duel, which was predicated by another sugary Matt speech about how he's at peace with everything, and God loves everyone...and I've never in my life loved the gloriously dimply Jeff Probst more than when he took it all in and essentially responded with, "OK then, let's play some shuffleboard!"

Probst then told them, "This is it. One Shot", which was wholly misleading because a) they get three shots minimum with their pucks, and b) only one is eliminated, so that's two shots right there.

Random musings on the (Non) Duel: why were their names on the pucks? Was there a threat of someone running in and using their lane unexpectedly? Was it necessary to constantly use the terms 'puck' and 'end zone' together, or was that just to confuse hockey and football fans? Bible Thumper Matt was surprisingly good in a bar game. And Julie, I don't mean to be so cold, but if your house foreclosure was a story, we would have heard about it before now.

Question for you, what was the worse moment for Probst in this challenge: Option #1) Screaming GOD IS NOT DONE TALKIN' TO MATT! when he won, or Option #2) Comparing Survivor's 39 days to Jesus' 40 days? Discuss in the Comments section.
- Grant suggested Andrea as a potential candidate to vote out, partially because she was feeling guilty about Matt, and partially because she's good at puzzles. (BUT NOT AS GOOD AS DAVE!) It was an interesting bit of strategy, but I couldn't get past the fact that he was wearing pink slippers in his confessional.

- Off to the Immunity Challenge, which featured an added reward of a chocolate cake the size of a coffee table. It was an old fashioned log-roll, and with 8 players left, the math works out perfectly so that two winners squared off for Immunity. It was Grant and Ralph (and no, that's NOT what GNR stands for), and Mr. Pink Slippers (who wore them for the first two rounds, but ditched them in favour of bare feet in the Final) dropped the hairy one into the water for the win.

A number of people were thrilled about this: Steve, because if Ralph won Immunity, he was a goner for sure.  And Ralph's entire family, because had he won it, they would have had to endure countless years of hearing about how he won the "Loge Row-Linge Chalenj."

Grant chose Rob and Andrea to share in two minutes of fisting the cake and wolfing it down, despite Ralph claiming "I'm not a gay person" for some reason which I didn't catch. Andrea looked like The Joker covered in chocolate, and Grant reminds me more of Ozzy every episode.

Also, there was a mysterious package...a "Twist." More on that later.

- Ralph (describing Tribal Council): "There’s gonna be none tellin’ what happens." What was funnier, that he had to repeat it THREE times for Steve before he understood what he was saying (and I'm still not convinced he did), or that we didn't get the obligatory Ralph Subtitles until the third time?

-Steve then decided to call Phillip a nimrod. Look Steve, I get that you're frustrated with Phillip for his rant last week, but if you're going to call him names, did you not have the presence of mind to think that the first TWO names you call him shouldn't be "N-Word's". Nimrod and Numbnuts? Really?

Oh, and he tried to sway the girls, who just ran and told Rob like good concubines should.
- Tribal Council started at 8:39...a pretty good sign that something big was going to happen. Phillip was shockingly quiet, Andrea talked about her group of 6 being "rock solid", and Grant extolled the virtues of his football brethren Steve, saying "Dude played in the NFL."

For the record, 'dude' is not a pronoun. Never has been, never will be. Neither is 'buddy.'

Ralph was predictably voted out, leaving the tribe both more literate, and less hairy.

Then the twist played out, an impromptu Immunity challenge that was essentially a live game of Simon. Dave was furious at missing out on another puzzle-type challenge, Julie whispered the most obvious statement in Survivor history by saying "Steve's gotta win", and Rob won easily. (Was there even a doubt?)

Although I did believe the Andrea swerve was about to go down, Ometepe chopped off the final member of Zapatera, sending Steve to Redemption (Non) Island, before calling it a night.
And to all of you conspiracy theorists out there who will suggest that the double Zapatera elimination was cooked up to speed up the inevitable, I don't buy it. I'm sure it was planned in advance.

But I had a better idea for the "Twist." How awesome would it have been if the tile said, the three people on Redemption Island will compete RIGHT NOW, the winner is back in the game, and THEN there is an immediate vote...and the Redemption (Non) Island returnee has immunity. Am I wrong? Wouldn't that have been great?

Next Week: Ometepe has no choice but to eat their own.

Body of Proof - Episode 1.06 - Society Hill - Recap

Alright! That was sweet!

Megan loathed the life she had in Chestnut Hill, yet she chose to come back and take this latest assignment. Fancy cars. Nice houses. City wide recognition as a top neurosurgeon. The recognition was nice, but she wouldn't want to relive the rest.

The victim was Society Fair Magazine editor, Daphne Zimmer, a powerful woman who has worked hard for her success. Megan automatically draws comparison between the victim and herself.

"Why is it every time a man calls a woman a power player, it sounds pejorative?" (Pejorative means belittling. Yes, I wanted to look up that word the first time Dana Delany said it.)

She wasn't an easy person to get along with. There are no shortage of suspects. They wouldn't find the cause of death until late in the episode. All they had to go on was that she died in her pool two days before she was found.

Dr. Hunt finds a new way to interrogate a suspect by re-entering high society, her mother's world. "Peter? Do you own a tuxedo?" Then we get to see Peter Dunlop clean up nice. It was no surprise to her that her mother found her actions embarrassing.

Megan and her mother Joan (Joanna Cassidy) argued about each other's faults, whereby Megan accuses her that she was not there for her. They will also have quality time at he end of this.

"You don't know what it's like to have friends."

"After the accident, after I lost my profession, my standing, where were my friends."

"You were too embarrassed. You were too worried about your friends."

We almost see Megan and Peter outside the context of work.
As usual he is always there to cheer her up when she seems low.

"Just try and take your mind off the job, okay?"

Megan wonders why Peter is inviting her for anything for the first time. To simply hang out.
Then in her eureka moment, Megan almost kisses Peter.

Other interesting tidbits:

Kate's specialty is in bones, teeth and hair.
Curtis's specialty is entomology.

Ethan is curious about Kate's personal life. Apparently, she is not always so nice to him.

Curtis enjoyed feeding the maggots a little too much for Ethan's liking.

An old friend thinks that Megan was mortician.

We got just Bud this week. Are they alternating the detectives, because it will give them more to do per episode?

Megan making an electric charge to shock Peter's ear.

Fringe 3.20 - 6:02 AM EST - Review

Fringe 3x20: In Which Walter Cooks Naked on Tuesdays and Our Universe Faces Imminent Destruction

This week’s episode marked the beginning of the end for both our universe and the third season of Fringe. The episode laid the foundation for the next two undoubtedly action-packed, heart-stopping instalments. ‘6:02 AM EST’ had a couple of heart-stopping moments of its own. We returned to the ‘Entrada-esque’ narrative which flipped back and forth between Ourverse and the Altverse, where Walternate was up to no good.

THINGS THAT MADE ME HAPPY:

Now, I am become Death – Walternate’s plan was finally revealed in full. In short, he sent Altliv ‘Over Here’ to steal the last piece of tech required to assemble The Machine ‘Over There’ and also to encourage Peter to begin working on assembling The Machine. Fate then seemed to smile upon him when Altlivia discovered she was to be Peter’s baby-mama. So, Walternate, ever the caring granddaddy, accelerated Altlivia’s pregnancy, not it seems for the sake of the baby, but to isolate Peter’s DNA within the child which would ultimately allow him to activate The Machine on our side via quantum entanglement. Which brings us back to this week’s episode...

And while Brandonate was all “Yay! I’m proud to be part of a project that kills billions of people and saves our universe!” Walternate was more sombre, understanding the weight of the sacrifice, the weight of the devastation he was about to cause. I thought that quoting Oppenheimer was both poignant and telling. Walternate is conscious of the sin, he knows what The Machine will do, yet to save the billions of people on his side, he will kill the billions on ours. “We destroy their world to save ours. May God have mercy on us.” I believe that Walternate truly believes that his way is the only way, making him a tragic figure. Still, that does not give him the authority to decide the fate of our universe.

Early Morning at the Bishops' – Naked Walter is not really something one wants to encounter early in the morning. Naked Walter is not really something one wants to encounter at all if possible. Unfortunately for Olivia, Naked! Walter is exactly who she encountered while sneaking out of her boyfriend’s bed at 6:25am. This scene was absolute gold, from Olivia’s ‘OMG where do I look?!/OMG I’m wearing only a shirt!!/OMG he’s wearing nothing!!’ expressions, to Walter’s complete nonchalance. Then she goes back to bed aka Cutesville where she and Peter make with the snugglies in the early morning sunlight. And I could practically imagine Wynkner saying, “Look how cute they are, guys. Look how happy they are. Look how much it’s going to hurt when we tear your hearts out.” This really was the calm before the storm.

The Beginning of the End – The scenes that followed filled me with a profound sense of dread. A vortex appearing in our world, the arrival of ‘the blight’, events increasing exponentially. Walter realising that The Machine was being activated via quantum entanglement was interesting as the team wondered how on earth Walternate could power it without Peter, of course not knowing that Peter Jr. solved that problem. I was glad to see Olivia put her ‘Over There’ knowledge to good use as she worked to develop the early warning system. So she went off to New York, but not before she and Peter exchanged “I love yous” with their eyes, which gave me the feeling that this was the last time they would see each other, for a while anyway.

Meanwhile in Altverse… - We got the picture of motherhood with Altlivia pushing baby Henry (who else cheered when the little nugget’s name was announced?) in his carriage when she got a message on her rather retro beeper. Altliv figured out that the Secretary had something to do with the alarmingly high energy surges on Liberty Island and decided to confront him - and thus begins Altlivia’s redemption arc. For the first time since her introduction, we got to see Olivia Dunham’s alternate stand up to authority and really become a badass on her own terms.

I believe it was important to show her standing up to Walternate, the one man who had in essence been pulling her strings all season. To see her actively rebel did more for her in terms of redemption than the baby arc could ever hope to achieve. It was important to us, as viewers to finally see Altlivia as a person with ideals and personal morals beyond those of the state. It was important for us to see that she was indeed affected by her time ‘Over Here’. And, in in that last moment with her sitting in that cell, sneering at the Secretary, she was more like our Olivia Dunham that she ever was while wearing her clothes or sleeping in her bed.

I think it was interesting that Walternate chose to mention the sacrifice of the son, which of course is one of the pervasive themes in the show. Altlivia was prepared to leave little Henry behind if it meant that she could bring Peter back. In a similar vein, Walter was finally ready to let go of his son…

Peter and The Machine – So Peter decided to embrace his so-called fate and enter The Machine in attempt to turn it off. I don’t know if this was the best idea. Personally, I would have tried to encase the thing in amber before getting in there barefoot, but hey. The plot did allow for some of the most heart-wrenching moments this season has delivered, including a very rare and touching moment between Walter and Broyles and a sweet hug between Astrid and Peter. But as always, the tears were saved for father and son. Walter’s reluctant acceptance of Peter’s decision and his final willingness to let him go was beautifully played out by both John Noble and Joshua Jackson.

As it turned out however, The Machine was not quite as friendly towards Peter as it was the last time they met. One touch and Peter was literally knocked off his feet. Yet despite the tremendous fall, his brain function was fine - doctors just couldn’t wake him up. I doubt the electric touch left him unaffected though. Something tells me that whatever is happening to Peter as he lies in that hospital bed is connected to The Machine.

All the Awards – John Noble continually blows me away with his gut-wrenching performances. His moment in the chapel really sold Walter’s despair and the depth of his remorse. I cannot stress enough how much I hope the cast and crew get recognised for their work this season.

Chasing the Weiss Rabbit – So Olivia met with Nina who told her that the universes were not playing fair because Sam Weiss told her that if Olivia and Peter made with the snugglies then everything would be just fine. Olivia understandably disturbed by the fact that Nina and Sam were discussing her love life decided to find Weiss and get answers.

The first few scenes saw Sam Weiss frown over two bowling balls, the red one impinging on the blue. Seemingly troubled by this omen, he unlocked a secret cupboard and retrieved a Newton’s Cradle which, after a few seconds, began to swing spontaneously, suggesting imbalance. Later, Sam was peering through what looked like a window to the other side and furiously scribbling down a mathematical equation, the result he got was an ominous 0.

By the time he reached Olivia, my assumption was that Sam Weiss is genuinely concerned for the state of our universe. Whatever is happening definitely seems to trouble him, which suggests that he is not maliciously planning the end of all humanity, which suggests that perhaps he is not all bad, which suggests that just maybe Olivia can trust Sam Weiss after all.

THINGS THAT MADE ME NOT SO HAPPY:

What About Mr X: I was expecting to get some reference to last week’s rather abrupt ending in which Olivia rather casually mentioned the man who she thought might kill her. I understand that the plot has to move along swiftly, but it seems strange that such a huge revelation would be swept under the rug.

Brandonate: He of the beady eyes and baby-teeth. As long as this character is in an episode, he will find himself on this side of the review. I find his presence more and more grating. He seemed even more obnoxious in this episode, particularly when he assumed he was important enough to stay in Walternate’s office before Olivia entered. While being knocked out by Altlivia was certainly a treat for me, I look forward to the day that he meets a more grisly end.

END NOTES:

As a lead-in to the finale, I thought this episode did very well. I imagine it will only get crazier from this point onwards so hold on to your oxygen because I have a feeling breathing might become difficult in the next two weeks.

Buffy Season 8 Recap - A Beautiful Sunset

We see a number of girls as they get hit with the Slayer power, the “chain”, much like in the final minutes of Season Seven, as Buffy’s inner monologue contemplates her decisions. She states that every now and then the world needs an apocalypse, to change and evolve, usually it means chaos but sometimes something great can come from it, like the Slayer organisation. She has changed the world, “yay me” she thinks as she sees that Simone has gone rogue with some other Slayers, beating up and stealing from humans with guns as weapons.

Xander explains that she was being taught by Andrew and they are trying to bring her down as quickly as possible, but Buffy thinks that the damage has already been done. The General thinks that the Slayers are not human, they are villains and here is Simone proving him right. Xander tries to make her feel better but she understands that she started this with the ‘victimless’ robbery. Buffy asks if there is anything else he needs to tell her and he tells her there is a vampire nest near by, Buffy is excited at the prospect of killing something as simple as vampires again. She asks if it is big enough to require a group but Xander tells her she probably needs just a partner. She says that she will probably take Satsu, she is Buffy’s best fighter and she’s been meaning to talk to her since the kiss. Xander reveals that Dawn and the other Slayers are having a party, but Buffy just wants to go to bed, “you spend too much alone” he tells her.

It is now the next day and Buffy is running and climbing over walls, finally she lands and stands up. A couple of seconds behind her is Satsu who lands in a puddle next to Buffy, much like Buffy has been seen crashing after being forced to fly, Buffy is clearly back in her element and is once again the teacher. Buffy helps her up and wipes mud from Satsu’s face, Satsu tells Buffy that she isn’t as fast or as good as Buffy but she tells her that one day she will be, there are a couple of rules she needs to learn first. One of those rules is to not land on your face, and another is that Satsu is in terrible danger because Satsu is in love with Buffy, Buffy then kicks her straight into the vampires lair.

Satsu and Buffy begin killing the vampires and Satsu asks if Buffy is kicking her out of the Slayer organisation but that is not what Buffy is getting at. They finish killing the vampires and Buffy tells her that she loves the idea of someone caring for her like that because she feels so lonely right now, it is fine for Buffy, but Satsu is still in danger. Anyone who has ever loved Buffy has died, been sent to a hell dimension, left town… she trails off and begins to cry. Buffy surprises herself, she didn’t mean to make it about herself. Suddenly Twilight falls from the sky and crashes into Buffy sending them both through a stone wall. “Always complaining, like a girl” he tells her, Satsu runs forward with her samurai sword in hand but Twilight quickly breaks it, hits Satsu in the face and sends her to the floor.

Buffy goes to use the same move she killed Caleb with (the scythe between the legs and then cutting upwards) but Twilight grabs it as she lowers it “I know that move Slayer. “Let me show you some of mine” he grabs her and takes them both upwards as a sunrise showers the area. He tells Buffy that he has been watching her and he has noticed that she hates flying, she tells him that she adapts quickly and he takes that as a challenge and flies through a number of buildings and finally throws her off and she lands on a rooftop. Twilight tells her that he originally came to talk to her, but he couldn’t bear to see her cry, she looks up at him and he is holding a large piece of broken roof. She challenges him to throw it at her, she has fought through worse.

He does so and she avoids the worse of the impact, he tells her that she has created a problem, an imbalance, by creating so many Slayers. They will suffer and their power will create a disaster, a disaster that Twilight will have to stop. He asks her if the now large number of Slayers has actually improved the world, has it even helped Buffy, she feels lonelier now than she has ever felt. Twilight flies off leaving Buffy to think about what he has told her. Twilight now stands in front of the woman officer seen at the end of "No Future For You" and a number of other humans and demons, she asks him why he avoided killing her again. Buffy is sat cradling a crying Satsu, Satsu feels like she failed Buffy. Buffy looks up at the beautiful sunrise. Twilight explains that Buffy has been killed before, but she always come back, to truly defeat Buffy you need to strip her of her moral certainty, she has always felt like she is on the ‘right’ side, they need to convince her otherwise.

Buffy sits at Satsu’s bedside as Satsu blames herself, Buffy eases her worries and tells her to heal. Buffy then corrects her statement and tells her that they will heal… together. Buffy is now high in the castle talking to Xander, she asks Xander if they are really doing the right thing, she is questioning the Slayer organisation and its use in the world. Xander explains that it is more than just fighting demons, he points down to lots of Slayers training below, they have given all these girls purpose and meaning, they have given them a connection. Buffy wonders why she doesn’t feel that connection, Xander suggests that maybe its because she is the leader, she is not allowed to feel the connection, it is something she must sacrifice to remain leader. Buffy once again feels sorry for herself, “yay me”.
