Buffy Season 8 Recap - The Long Way Home - Part 3

Questions answered in this Issue:
Who or what is Amy's boyfriend?

We return to Buffy’s dream rather than the action between Willow and Amy, we see the red shirt, the black coat and the hand extended once again. Buffy’s inner monologue shows that she is surprised he called her “my love” and we turn the page and it is revealed that she is disgusted as much as surprised that he called her “my love” because the man standing before her is Ethan Rayne, Giles’ friend from his Ripper days, the man who worships “chaos” and has caused Buffy inconvenience in the past with magic. He explains that this is not a dream but her ‘dreamspace’, every dream and prophecy she can ever have is here always in her subconscious, he explains that everywhere you look in here contains a part of Buffy. He then rips open a curtain in the darkness and asks if she would like to see one, there stands Buffy in a nurses outfit chained together with a naked Angel and a naked Spike, she quickly closes the curtain. Ethan explains that while he has forced himself into her dreamspace he is here to help her, because he did not cause the spell and people outside need her help.

Willow and Amy are shown battling in the sky high above the castle while down below the Slayers are still trying to kill the zombies. Amy taunts Willow, reminding her that she almost destroyed the world once but now she seems so weak. Willow suddenly stops fighting and explains that Amy wasn’t seeing the big picture, Willow wasn’t fighting Amy she was absorbing her magic so she could reverse her effects and then sends a blast of magic over the battle below turning the zombies into well mannered gentlemen who simply want to dance with the Slayers. Willow states that the zombie army was the priority, Amy’s fight was clearly just to distract Willow from solving the zombie problem, Amy laughs and tells her that the zombies were actually the distraction and sends a blast at Willow who is clearly hit hard by it.

Ethan leads Buffy through her dreamspace, showing multiple images behind her. There we see Angel, Cordelia, Buffy’s graduation day, Dawn, Faith, The Master and even a little image of Joss Whedon. Ethan explains that Amy’s spell has created a connection between Buffy’s dreamspace and Amy’s, they are on their way to Amy’s dreamspace. Ethan lands gracefully onto solid ground and we see Buffy crash into the floor behind him “There is a memory here that we need…”

Willow is falling from the sky when suddenly her eyes turn black and she returns a blast towards Amy. Amy is glad that Willow is finally fighting back properly, when we see Xander talking to someone on a headset “say it with me ‘Fee Fi Fo…”
Dawn then stamps on Amy “F%$#ing Fum!” Dawn finishes. Willow still with black hair and eyes tells Dawn off for swearing then casually asks Dawn why she is a giant as she traps Amy in a mystical cell. Dawn looks sad as she tells her that they need to talk, then she asks if Willow is evil again referring the to dark features, Willow explains that it will fade showing the reader that Willow even seems to have her dark side under control.

Buffy and Ethan are now in Amy’s dreamspace where Buffy observes a rat wheel and realises that it is Amy who has put her under this spell. Ethan tells her to walk around and to see what she can find, they find three large X’s and Buffy wonders if this has something to with porn or perhaps Vin Diesel. Ethan explains that it is more likely to represent roman numerals, he tells her to remember what she saw in Amy’s dreamspace and that “Twilight is falling”. He looks at Buffy and tells her that she is going to need all the help she can get.

Willow, Xander and a group of Slayers overlook Buffy sleeping. Willow holds a sad expression and comments that Buffy looks tired, Xander tells her that it’s been a long year and then asks Willow where she has been. She tells him that they’ll talk later but for now they need to concentrate on this true love spell. Willow turns to the room and tells them all that someone in this room, they may not realise it yet, they may not want other people to know but someone in this room wants to kiss Buffy passionately. She threatens everyone to keep their eyes closed so that the person can do what they need to, the final shot is of Xander before they close their eyes then Buffy awakens having received a kiss from someone who truly loves her. She holds her hands to her lips commenting that she can taste cinnamon then realises Willow is back and gets excited.

Giles meanwhile is at a meeting with a Demon, the same type of Demon Buffy killed in the first issue. It is angry at the death of its kind, Giles point out that they broke protocol which we can only assume means that this demon has a deal in which it stays in hiding. The Demon states that they must have been lured out there, and Giles agrees, Giles thinks that someone engineered the conflict and that person is connected to the symbol. The Demon does not recognise the symbol but points out that it could be a trick by the Slayer, Giles reassures it that while they are enemies and that one day they will have to battle they will choose that day and will not be tricked by a third party. Giles asks if it ever comes by any information on the symbol to contact him, whatever it is connected to is an enemy for both Slayer and the Demon.

Xander visits Renee who is in bed with injuries, she feels guilty for not doing enough knowing that Slayers died in the battle. Xander tells her that when she screws up Buffy will kick her ass, and if Buffy is in a mystical coma like earlier that night Xander has the responsibility to kick her ass, but she did not screw up tonight she did do everything she could and she should heal and return to duty. Xander laughs and asks if he actually sounded quite masculine, she smiles and says that it was kind of butch.

Buffy and Willow stand in front of a mystically caged Amy, Willow says that she is going to run a trace on Amy’s transportation spell and find out where she came from. The conversation quickly loses track and Buffy asks where Willow has been, she says that they’ll talk about it later, Buffy asks if she is still with Kennedy. “She died” Willow tells her, Buffy gasps and holds her hands up to her face in shock. Willow quickly realises how it sounded, she tells Buffy that Kennedy is fine now, it was a temporary death, only lasted a month. “I always tell that wrong” Willow says. Xander enters to see Buffy and Willow hugging and laughing, he wants to know what is so funny when they tell him ‘girl stuff’ he still wants to know, Willow asks him if he has had a slow year. Xander explains that according to his parents the action he is getting right now would make him remaining eye go blind while in the background Buffy remembers something from her dream. “Wait, who kissed me?” she asks realising she doesn’t know, but Willow is distracted as she is about to find out where Amy came from. They see military personnel and Amy’s eyes turn black, Willow realises a second too late that it is a trap and Amy and Willow get pulled through the portal. Leaving Buffy and Xander scrambling to get people who can help them re-open the portal.

Willow is now tied down in an operating room. Amy gloats once more that Willow fell for her trap, and explains that while they are contracted to bring in Buffy she is sure that by kidnapping Willow, Buffy will eventually show up. Willow asks what Amy meant by ‘we’ as it seems like Amy is the only one here, a silhouette walks towards Willow and tells her that while killing Buffy is going to be fun, he is looking forward to his time with Willow and a still skinless Warren walks forward with a saw.

Questions left open by this issue:
Who kissed Buffy?
What is "Twilight"?

Buffy Season 8 Recap - The Long Way Home - Part 2

For those who do not remember who Amy is, she is the witch who was introduced in Season 1 of Buffy. In a later season she turned herself into a rat, Willow then kept her as a pet until she could transform her back to her human body. Willow finally became powerful enough in Season Six and fixed Amy who then introduced Willow to magic addiction. When Willow finally decided to ‘get clean’ Amy took it as a personal insult and in Season Seven she manipulated Willow’s guilt in Tara’s death to mentally torture her until Willow instead came to terms with her death and found some peace. Amy has always held some jealousy for Willow and her magic ability.

The 'previously' part at the start of the issue also confirms that Buffy's castle is situated in Scotland. We’ve seen Buffy’s inner monologue, we’ve seen Xander’s, now its Giles’ turn. The first image is a just boiled cup of tea with the words “I used to be a Watcher”, we turn the page to see Giles looking down onto over thirty young girls fighting. He tells us that there used to be hundreds of Watchers and only one Slayer, but says that lately the scales have tipped. He calmly demands that the girls stop fighting and they immediately do, they are all Slayers and they are all being trained by him.
He tells them that they are fighting incorrectly, they are fighting on their own and the Slayer no longer needs to fight alone, they need to work together to fight at their full potential. Giles’ speech flows directly into the next page where Buffy is giving the same lesson to a group of Slayers she is training, the Slayer no longer fights alone but they fight together. We then move to Andrew training his group of Slayers who instead is rambling about Star Wars, “does that answer your question?” he finally states. The puzzled Slayers reply “no”. One Slayer speaks up and asks why they can’t just use guns, Andrew reminds her (and the reader) that the Slayer never uses guns, guns are bad.

Xander is now seen sat next to a bathing Dawn, she is seemingly bathing in a lake due to her giantness. Xander sits with his back to her discussing her relationship with Buffy, Dawn thinks it’s clear that Buffy doesn’t want her there and Xander admits that Buffy would prefer if she was still in college and is disappointed she had to drop out due to her current mystical condition but she likes having Dawn around again. Dawn doesn’t quite believe him; she thinks that Buffy is more interested in her new Slayers, why would she care about her sister when Buffy has hundreds of new sisters who she relates to. Xander takes a moment then asks if she possibly caused this giant problem on purpose to get Buffy’s attention, she doesn’t respond and simply splashes water over him which at her size soaks him.

The General who was seen in the last issue is talking to another member of the military, he tells them that Amy has co-ordinates and is going in to get “her”, and if Amy fails they should send in her boyfriend. The General says that he is only to be woken when a report comes through; he closes the door on the man and walks into his room. He takes off his shirt and it is revealed that the symbol from the previous issue is carved into his chest just like the dead bodies in the previous issue.

Buffy and Xander are walking down a hallway that is clearly within their castle, Xander is telling Buffy about his concern that Dawn is trying to get attention and is putting off the reason why she has become a giant to prolong it. Xander points out that it wouldn’t be surprising as Dawn must be full of abandonment issues, her Mom, Tara, Buffy… twice. Buffy begins to blame herself saying that its always her fault, Xander tells her not to think like that, she has done the guilt thing before and he doesn’t want to see her doing it again. She looks up and we have a close up of her eyes as she asks him “are you coming to bed?”.

If this was still a television programme this would most certainly be where the adverts would run, in the comics they have adverts too which help give moments like this a dramatic pause however they do not work as well because the dramatic pause is only a couple of seconds as you turn the page. We return and Xander seems instantly alarmed “we both know what a mistake that is” Buffy smiles “I’ll be gentle this time” implying that this has happened before. She kisses him and his head falls from his body, Xander sarcastically points out “Yeah… gentle”. Suddenly the window smashes and tries to suck Buffy out making it very clear that this a dream,
“I can’t go outside, I’m afraid of the dark!” screams Buffy as she is pulled out of the window by an unseen force.
“Buffy, you are the dark” Xander’s head replies.

Buffy falls from the window into the hand of giant rock demon, her hands and feet are pierced by his sharp fingers. She manages to mutter “I know you…” the demon replies that she does indeed recognise him and then uses its fire breath to engulf her in flames. We then cut to what is really happening and Amy is seen holding a dagger about to plunge it into a sleeping, screaming, Buffy who is tied to the bed. Xander storms in with a crossbow and some back up in the form of Slayers in their nightwear. Amy looks at them and decides to kill Buffy anyway, she brings the dagger down and Buffy screams. Amy is shot by Xander’s crossbow and the Slayers tackle her to the floor, Xander runs towards Buffy to find the dagger mangled. Xander points out that Amy is stupid for thinking that Buffy would not be protected with magic. Amy smiles because they haven’t realised that Buffy is still under her spell and dreaming, she gloats that the only thing that can wake her up is true loves kiss. Once again the advertisements in the comic are placed perfectly to give the reader a dramatic pause, and then we get a close up of Xander in disbelief “Seriously?”.

We then see the Slayer who was talking to Xander in issue 1 standing guard atop the castle. She is talking to another Slayer on guard, “its not love” Renee says talking about “Mr Harris”, but her friend thinks otherwise commenting how Renee has taken up sudden interest in things that Xander likes, including comic books and dry walling. Before Renee has a chance to defend herself they hear a noise, “like crawling” and look down from their high point on the castle to see zombies climbing the walls of the castle.

We return to Xander and Amy arguing almost like friends as Amy tells him that to wake Buffy up the kiss needs to be done by someone passionately in love with Buffy so it cannot be ‘friend’ love or the love between family but someone who wants to kiss her passionately, she looks at him and asks if Xander would be able to break the curse, he doesn’t respond. A Slayer runs in and informs Xander of the zombie attack to which he replies to Amy in annoyance “You’re really pulling out the classics tonight”.
We see the chaos that is happening outside the castle as the Slayers attempt to kill the zombies, Renee is stabbed with a sword and we return to Buffy’s dream.

She is surrounded by darkness screaming in pain and then a voice attempts to comfort her, “you can’t give up that easily Buffy…” we turn the page to see a man in a long black coat and a red t-shirt holding out his hand to Buffy. We cannot see his face but we presume Buffy can. “I have so much I need to show you…my love”.
The battle outside is becoming more chaotic. The Slayers reveal they cannot kill the zombies; even head shots do not seem to slow them down. Amy sits high in the tower looking down on the chaos she has caused, she speaks aloud, amused “a Hundred Slayers, and not one person powerful enough to stop me”. She is interrupted and looks up at the person speaking “As a friend of mine once said…” we turn the page to see who Amy is looking at and there floats Willow “I’d like to test that theory” echoing the words Giles said to her when Willow thought she was too powerful to be taken down.

Body of Proof - Episode 1.01 - Pilot - Recap

I have been looking forward to this. Just when the TV landscape has been speaking only to my short attention span recently, ABC offers up a familiar genre, I missed so much from the 80s, a juicy medical mystery, in the same vein of Quincy with heart. Although, I have not seen Dana Delany's other shows as much. She is one familiar face I love to see on television. And I wasn't disappointed.

The tagline:
Brilliant neurosurgeon Megan Hunt had it all, family and career, or so she thinks... until an accident killed her... career.

After a year as medical examiner, she still has to prove herself to her bosses and struggles to have a relationship with her twelve year old daughter, when her ex-husband got full custody.

In this episode, she is assigned the case of a drowning victim. What she finds out about the girl's life is what helped find her killer.

'The body is the proof. It will tell you everything you need to know if you just have the patience to look.' We can expect this to be her motto.

Megan needs friends. Medical investigator and ex-cop Peter Dunlop is the closest thing right now. He has been assigned to her for 6 months and is only starting to get to know her. He noticed that she is a lot like her latest victim. The car accident that ended her career, changed her. It's making her a better doctor.

She is out for justice. She is unapologetic about the questions she asks the suspects or who she annoys. “I'm right. He's wrong. Question is how to prove it.”

'This new you, Megan Hunt M.E., who seems to cares about dead people more than she ever did about the living. Is she for real, or is she just working off her guilt for killing a patient on the operating table?' She admits both.

She can't go back to her old job because her hands still go numb. She realized she didn't really care about her last patient until she died.

She makes people asks questions. Why did a suicide victim blow his brain's out?

She finally makes a connection with her daughter. Instead of buying her affection, she gave something from her heart, her daughter a key to her apartment. Letting her into her life. Earning her a piece of pink birthday cake.

She's brilliant and driven. She throws elbows, but gets results. The Chief Medical Examiner (Jeri Ryan), her boss respects her abilities, but warns, 'The knives will come out the minute you screw up.'

By the end of this episode, it succeeded in making me care about Megan Hunt.

Memorable moments:
'And detective, I take mine with cream no sugar.' - Megan winks at Det. Morris after she makes her request.

'You can't kill somebody if they are already dead.' - Megan tells Det. Baker why she left a career as a neurosurgeon.

Running through line:
Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Curtis Brumfield can't seem to get people to call him doctor.

I only wish I could have taken part in the live tweet with Dana Delany tonight.

Main Cast
Dana Delany as Dr. Megan Hunt
Jeri Ryan as Dr. Kate Murphy (Chief Medical Examiner), Megan's boss
John Carroll Lynch as Detective Bud Morris (Homicide Division)
Nicholas Bishop as Peter Dunlop (Medical Investigator)
Sonja Sohn as Detective Samantha Baker (Homicide Division)
Geoffrey Arend as Dr. Ethan Gross (Forensic Pathology Fellow)
Windell D. Middlebrooks as Dr. Curtis Brumfield (Deputy Chief Medical Examiner)

Recurring Characters
Mary Mouser as Lacey Fleming, Megan's 12-year-old daughter
Jeffrey Nordling as Todd Fleming, Megan's ex-husband

Buffy Season 8 Recap - The Long Way Home - Part 1

We start on a shot of the earth seen from space with the sun shining from behind it, it is unclear whether it is a sunrise or a sunset but perhaps it is purposely ambiguous and open for the readers interpretation, is this a new beginning, or is it the end?
Buffy’s narration also contributes to the opening image. “The thing about changing the world, is once you do it the worlds all different.” We turn the page to see Buffy and a couple other women who we do not recognise jumping from a helicopter as Buffy continues her narration. She informs us that there used to be one Slayer and now there is nearly Eighteen Hundred, Five Hundred of which are working for her in Ten different squads. Buffy has turned her power, her ‘curse’ into an organisation. She tells us there is even three Buffys, one is underground “literally” and the other is partying in Rome, dating some guy called the Immortal which she tells us was Andrew’s idea and that it would be funny. For those who did not watch Angel this refers to the season of Angel after Buffy had finished, the episode revolves around Angel and Spike as they chase the rumour that Buffy is in Rome, the episode never showed Buffy other than the back of a blonde haired woman presumably because Sarah Michelle Gellar was unavailable for a cameo, however we now have confirmation that it never was Buffy but a double.

Buffy tells us that she still has a Watcher, we then see Xander who is easily recognisable with an eyepatch after the events of Season Seven. He is surrounded by large screens, computers and women working at them. He is seen talking to Buffy and telling her that everything is Five by Five, which was one of Faith’s phrases perhaps a sign that Faith is working with them, foreshadowing Faith’s arrival, or is he simply using the phrase in a military style like it originated. Xander is then seen talking to a particular girl in the ‘control room’, she is not recognisable from the series she informs him that there are problems with the "Barecelona squad" informing the audience that not only does Buffy have hundreds of Slayers working for her but they are also worldwide which was hinted at during Angel's final Season. Xander asks jokily if he can be referred to as Sergeant Fury due to his eye patch and the Slayer agrees. While the series often made reference to popular culture this is made even more relevant due to its new comic format and Xander’s new image as an army general with an eyepatch. We discover that the Slayer’s name is Renee and consider whether she is a love interest for Xander

Buffy and her group of Slayers kick through a door to a stone built building and find some human bodies and some demons, this seems like a normal patrol for Buffy which is very different to the patrols we saw in the series. Buffy and her fellow Slayers quickly dispose of the monsters thanks to some help from even more Slayers with harpoons, Buffy finishes the final one off with the sharp end of a large crucifix. She quips that she finds it weird using a crucifix to kill something, however for the reader it is a great image full of Buffy humour and a great moment to contemplate how far Buffy has come, from the second episode surviving a vampire attack due to the tiny crucifix necklace she is wearing to this moment of using a crucifix almost as big as herself to skew a great demon.
They return to the human bodies and note a symbol carved into their chests, Buffy tells the others to take a picture and send it to Giles confirming that Giles is still involved with Buffy even though Xander has taken over the role of ‘Watcher’. The next image is still of Buffy but much further away, far enough away to include the image of two black boots and a black drape of clothing floating in the sky showing that someone seems to be watching Buffy.

We then leave all the characters we would recognise and see a helicopter during the day, two men in army clothing are talking about the Slayers as enemies. They point out that there is a leader, they are organised and they have many weapons, the other man observes that they also work in different ‘cells’ which makes Buffy and her team comparable to “terrorists”. The other agrees with the statement then says “look what she did to her hometown” we then see that the helicopter is above Sunnydale, or what is left of it which is nothing but a crater.

Military personnel in hazmat suits are shown deep below in the wreckage of Sunnydale searching for traces of magic, perhaps trying to work out how and why Sunnydale is now just a crater. One man states that there is nothing “down here” no bodies or traces of magic. We then see two arms move towards him, he turns around and we see a face reflected in his helmet as he screams.

The symbol from earlier is now seen in black and white as Buffy and Xander debate what it could mean. Xander thinks it is a “guy with a monocle frowning” Buffy cocks her head to the side and says that she thinks it looks like “a beautiful sunset”.
“You need to see Dawn” Xander interrupts, Buffy is obviously trying to avoid the unsaid situation. She tells Xander that there is nothing they can do until they find Willow anyway, telling the audience that Willow is missing and that they do not know where she is. Buffy is pressured to go talk to Dawn anyway, she needs her sister Xander reminds her. While they are now running a Slayer organisation and fulfill the the image of mature professionals, behind closed doors Buffy and Xander are the same kids we saw grow up in the series, they joke, Buffy unprofessionally eats while studying important information and most importantly they still have very human problems which diverts Buffy's attention away from the symbol.

Buffy walks in and her narration begins again, telling the audience that all Dawn does is talk about her problems, but then Buffy feels a little guilt because Dawn’s problems are definitely big enough to warrant some complaints. It is then revealed that Dawn is now a giant. Buffy and Dawn bicker like sisters, Buffy blames Dawn’s relationship with a Thricewise on the fact that she is now a giant, Dawn wants to talk to Willow about this, Dawn claims she was helpful after Buffy died (insinuating Willow is more of a Mother than Buffy ever has been). They continue bickering even as Buffy leaves, exchanging insults Buffy leaves and it is revealed that they are now all living in a castle. “I miss my home” Buffy thinks. “I miss my mom, I miss the gang” Buffy’s world is certainly “all different”.

The military General that was overlooking the crater earlier is now walking down a hall with other military personnel. He looks into a cell and is instantly alarmed “how is that thing alive??” a scientist explains that they think Subject One is keeping it alive with magic. The General asks what the subject wants, the scientist explains that she wants access to all magic hardware and a weapons lab for her boyfriend plus immunity and release if they succeed in killing Buffy Summers. Also she wants lots of cheese, the General asks what her name is, “Her name is Amy”.

Already we can see a key theme to this Season, perspective. Is this the beginning or the end? Is Buffy right in forming this 'army'? Your perspective on a situation rules your thoughts on it which will play an important part later in the season.
Xander's quick interruption while looking at the symbol perhaps holds a double meaning, while Buffy can see a sun setting, Xander tells her that she needs to see dawn e.g. a sun rising. Does Buffy see the end, is Xander telling her she needs to see the beginning.
Xander's new role is a great continuation from Season Seven where Dawn points out that Xander's power is watching his loved ones and knowing what they need. While Giles was a great Watcher, Xander is possibly better as he is watching and helping both Buffy's professional life and private life.

Questions left open by this issue.
Where is Willow?
How is Buffy funding this new Slayer organisation?
What does Buffy mean by her double being underground, is she dead?
Who was watching Buffy from afar?
What is a thricewise?
Who or what is Amy’s ‘boyfriend’?
What does that symbol represent?

Fringe 3.18 - Bloodline - Review

Fringe 3x18 - In Which Walternate Weaves a Wicked Web and Olivia Officially Becomes a MILF

Not since 'Marionette' have I been as moved by an episode of Fringe as I was during this week’s instalment. It didn’t help that I was already an emotional wreck after learning that FOX had finally heard our threatspleas and confirmed the renewal of the show for a fourth season. I’m guessing the employees at the network are all suffering tooth-decay from all the red-vines they received. This week’s episode was more of the bitter-sweet as we shifted our gaze ‘Over There’. The narrative was focussed and tightly woven, centring intensely on Atlivia’s abduction and its Fringish consequences, leading to unexpected arrivals and unsettling revelations.

THINGS THAT MADE ME HAPPY

Oh baby – The episode began with the drawing of blood. Interestingly enough, it ended with blood as well. We soon learnt that Olivia had an 8 in 10 chance of being a carrier of Viral Propagated Eclampsia (VPE) which, after some googling it seems exists solely ‘Over There’. What I liked about this revelation was the convincing reactions from both Olivia and Marilyn. I thought Amy Madigan did a great job of portraying her maternal concerns and fears regarding Olivia’s choices, but I was particularly pleased by the fact that Olivia was realistically considering the fact that, regardless of the VPE, she might not be prepared emotionally or otherwise for a baby. Of course this option is soon taken away from her, but it was interesting to see the writers playing with the possibility of choice.

“Someone who’ll love you for who you are on the inside” – I call them Scona. So Scarlie and Mona ‘the bug girl’ Foster had ‘tea’ (always a suspect concept in the Fringe verse). It seems like he’s finally found someone to scratch his spiders when they itch. I wish that was a euphemism. I really appreciated this as one of the cuter, lighter moments in the episode and I do hope we hear or see more of Scona in the future.

Henry - Andre Royo reprised his role as Henry, this time playing the hero to a different Olivia. I loved that he had been checking up on her, which really just reinforces the profound impact our Olivia had on him. This character has really come to stand as a symbol of hope and courage - in the short span that we’ve seen him he’s risked his own life (twice) to help a woman he barely knew and then, despite being taken in by the scary government folk who took his cab, and mind-screwed by the idea of alternate universes, he delivers the baby of a woman he’s already met (except not really) on the floor of a Chinese shop while dozens of onlookers gape through the window. This guy deserves a medal or something.

The Birth - When I first started watching Fringe, as weird and far-out as it seemed, the image of Olivia Dunham giving birth was one of the last things I expected to see. We got teased with a sneaky image of Olivia suffering from a nightmarishly accelerated pregnancy in a dream sequence in “The Same Old Story”, which at the time, seemed rather random and now seems like the coolest case of foreshadowing ever.

Once again, Anna Torv knocked it out of the ballpark as she went from last week’s delightfully absurd to the opposite end of the spectrum with this week’s heartbreakingly dramatic performance. This episode also gave Seth Gabel a chance to shine. I’ve always been sort of neutral towards Lincoln and his feelings towards Liv, but this episode sold me on both.

The scene in China Town will go down as one of the most beautifully moving scenes in Fringe history. It was perfectly orchestrated, from the intensity of the situation, to Lincoln’s heartfelt declaration of love and Olivia’s stoic resignation. Interestingly, the score reminded me of Lost’s ‘Deus Ex Machina’ in which a young Claire gives birth to Aaron in the jungle while the inexperienced Kate delivers him. I was extremely hesitant about the idea an alt-pregnancy, but by the end of this scene I was crying harder than the baby.

Baby Dunham – wearing blue and red (and rocking the patent Dunham beanie), conceived in one universe, born in another - baby boy Dunham (born 14/02/2011 according to his blood chart) is no doubt going to be an important figure on the board. His grandfather went to considerable lengths to make sure of his existence (I’m curious to see what his father’s reaction will be when he learns of it, inter-universal child-support must be a bitch.) Either way, with the Observer observing and ominously stating “It is happening,” I’m worried about what the new-born’s future holds.

Other notables - Kick-Astrid was doing just
that in this episode. I enjoyed her involvement in the search, but the highlight was her barely muted reaction to Lincoln’s Jerry Springer-esque bombshell “Agent Dunham is pregnant with Secretary Bishop’s grandchild”. I haven’t said this often enough, but kudos to Jasika Nicole for pulling off this strange and oddly endearing character.

Charlie and Lincoln are finally questioning the greater scheme of things. As we move nearer to the end, characters are becoming self-aware and uncovering more truths. This makes me wonder if the two teams will slowly start to merge towards one common goal – saving both universes.

THINGS THAT MADE ME NOT SO HAPPY:

Brandon(h)ate – I despise this character, and not in a “love to hate ‘em” kind of way. Maybe it’s the baby-teeth, maybe it’s the smug, constipated smirk, maybe it’s the fact that there is not one redeemable quality about him. Whatever it is, I seriously cannot wait for him to die a grisly, violent death, preferably at the hand of a Dunham (either one, I’m not picky).

Act of Hubris – My feelings toward Walternate grow less and less ambivalent as the season progresses. Initially, he was portrayed as the villain, before we saw a more human, more fleshed out version of the character, but lately I’m inclined to cast him back into the baddie role. I cannot see how his abduction of Olivia can be justified in any sense. His means were brutal and inhumane. If he wanted to save his grandchild, he should have sat her down and discussed it with her as opposed to abducting her, drugging her, stretching her bones, accelerating her pregnancy and ultimately (and ironically) putting both her life and the life of her child in danger. Just no.

END NOTES:

The fact is that I was incredibly reluctant to accept this storyline when rumours of it first started circling the fandom. I couldn’t see how a pregnancy would fit in, much less benefit the overall plot, yet now I am not only engaged, but excited about the possibilities that it may hold. This episode had me whipped, got me to sob over a narrative I once despised and if that’s not brilliant storytelling, and then I don’t what is. My only regret at this point is that we have to wait three weeks before getting our fix of LSD ;)

House - TV Line - Season Finale Special Guest Star and Title Revealed!

If my hunch is right, House fans are gonna love this news, and Huddy fans are gonna hate it: Shohreh Aghdashloo has just signed on to appear in the Fox hit’s season finale.

Why will fans of the show love it? Uh, because the 24 alum kicks ass — she’s not only an Oscar nominee, she’s an Emmy winner. Hello?!

But, like I said, Huddy fans might not be so excited if I’m correct in guessing that she’ll be playing Doc Crankypants’ new mother-in-law, which would translate to his recent green-card marriage having legs.

Mind you, I don’t know for sure that the new missus’ mom is who Aghdashloo will be playing — details about her role are being kept under wraps for now. It’s entirely possible Aghdashloo is just the patient of the week. But you have admit, Aghdashloo bears a strong resemblance to the new Mrs. House, actress Karolina Wydra.

One thing I know for sure about the finale: The title is, “Moving On.” A reference to Huddy perhaps?

Amazing Race: Episode 6 Recap: "To Tea Or Not To Tea"

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race - Episode 6.

The preview for this week’s episode of The Amazing Race teased a major meltdown by Luke at one of the tasks for this leg of the Race. Could I actually be that lucky? To have the ultimate Mama’s Boy eliminated on the same day as the North Carolina Tar Heels were bounced from the NCAA Tournament? Let’s find out.

My Random Thoughts:

- In my first recap of the season, I said that I would be doing a season-long “Goth Count”, to see how often Kent and Vyxsin said the word “Goth.” Well, we’re six episodes into this season, and we still haven’t heard it yet, so I’m tossing it aside. Kent, I know you’re reading, and I tip my hat to you: your efforts to make sure you weren’t edited into the repetitive “Gothsters” that we saw last time around have thus far proven successful.

- Mallory went back to her manic ways in this episode, coming across once again as a Cheri Oteri character from Saturday Night Live. She shrieked when she opened the clue at the Pit Stop, she almost had a seizure when she found out she was going to India, and she freaked out when they arrived in India to see how many people were outside of the airport. I had a tough time noticing much else about her because my eyes were always drawn to her giant yellow watch. Did you notice that? I’ve seen televisions that were smaller than that watch!

- Many of the teams were shocked to find that they were staying in China to start this leg, but Luke and Margie were visibly annoyed and upset. That didn’t shock me at all, because those two will complain about absolutely anything. Karmic foreshadowing, perhaps?

- Did we really have to have the phrase “Holy Cow” shoved in our face when the teams arrived in India? Did the producers think we weren’t going to be able to interpret “Holy Cow”, and actually needed subtitles? Yes, we get the irony of the teams arriving in India, where the cow is a sacred animal, and saying “Holy Cow”, but did we really need to be told “Look at us…we’re funny!”
- I enjoyed the montage of insane driving that saw most of the cabs having the teams fearing for their lives, and Ron and Christina almost getting blindsided by a truck...only to find out that the mad racing everyone was involved in, had all of them arrive at a location that didn't open for 8 hours. If you're going to take your life in your hands, I'm thinking that maybe you pick your spots a little better.

I had a good laugh at Big Easy and the others yelling at other arriving teams to run down to the end of the street and sign up on the sheet, sending them into a panic for no reason other than their own enjoyment. Everyone pretty much took it in stride, though, and I had to acknowledge the fact that these racers are generally more good-natured towards each other, and try to have fun with each other in the times they're not racing. Take the impromptu basketball game last week, or that practical joke tonight. Quite a stark contrast from the bitterness of, for instance, Carol and Brandi towards Brent and Caite a couple of seasons ago, don't you think?

- I liked that the teams had to participate in the tea tasting that would come back later in the episode in the form of the Road Block. Zev thought it was “pointless” at the time, but I think the fact that the clue specified that it was a “tasting” should have told them that what they were tasting would be relevant later.

For the Road Block itself, Ron got it on the first try, Kisha did it for the Sisters Team, presumably because Jen would have had to stop to pee a few times (I know that joke will probably be made by 100 different people, but I'm still going with it), Mallory seemingly had trouble keeping the tea in her mouth with the constant drops dripping off of her chin, and prayed to Jesus (yet again) for help. Maybe you don't need help from your saviour...I'm thinking that a napkin or a sippy cup would suffice here. And I absolutely loved this back-to-back exchange as the teams were presenting their mango and papaya to the man at the Road Block:

Kent: "I bring you papaya...and I bring you mango"
Flight Time: "Here you go, homey"

But the best part of the challenge (Exhibit #1 in the Sean is an Asshole case) was Luke's total and utter meltdown. "Why is this so tough?", he cried, "So hard, hard, hard.” Personally, I think the challenges in a Race around the world for a million dollars SHOULD be hard, but the reason it was so tough for you, Luke, was because for the first time in this Race, you two had to do something on your own! No listening in for clues, no getting help from other teams. This time, Margie and Luke could only count on Margie and Luke...and guess what? It wasn't good enough. Team Freeloader was on their own for once.

But this petulant child kept whining and complaining to his mom, which accomplishes nothing but delaying him in completing the Road Block even longer. And with the way he was wailing constantly, it's not like her consolations even helped him. He just kept crying like Roy Williams after one of his teams gets eliminated from the NCAA Tournament (by the way, adios UNC!)

And don't even try to fool me with your redemptive music and everyone at the Road Block cheering for Luke once he actually found the correct tea. After the table had hundreds and hundreds of cups, by the time he found it, there appeared to be only 6 or 7 cups left, and he was too lazy to even walk up to the guy with the list. He just slouched on the table and held it up from there. Did the posse of Indian men just herd all the cups at the end for him to do that? I guess if you cry long enough, they'll adjust the rules for you?

- Flight Time and Big Easy weren't able to immediately figure out that the clue was in the Snapple cap, but they did find the clue once they were in the cab, speeding along the streets of Kolkata. Let me ask you this, if they didn't know where they were going to get their next clue...where the hell were they going in that cab?

- I'm hearing "Baby" way too much this season. It's making me feel like Louie and Michael, the Undercover Cops from Rhode Island (that still kills me!) are back on the Race.

- At the Detour, teams had to choose between Art and Literature. The Art portion of the Detour saw teams working to "paint, dress, and adorn" a statue of an Indian Goddess. This was a perfect task for Kent and Vyxsin, who gushed about the fact that it was pink, and that painting on eyebrows and accesorizing was what they themselves did every morning. And did I hear something wrong in the cab, or did he just call Vyxsin's breasts "tea pillows"?

The Literature portion saw teams delivering children's books to a school, and I was thinking to myself, any Detour that involves the instructions "teams must direct their driver through the congested streets of Kolkata” is something I would stay as far away from as possible. Shockingly, all of the teams that chose this one breezed right through it, none faster than Gary and Mallory, who arrived at the Pit Stop first...faster than when they used their Express Pass last week.
- Once they arrived at the Pit Stop, I waited to hear what their prize was going to be for winning the leg, and then I listened to Phil launch into a long explanation about two new brands of Snapple, and how Gary and Mallory were going to be the first two people to try them. Mallory was ecstatic, and it reminded me of that scene from Seinfeld where Kramer agrees to a deal just a tad too early.

I'm thinking to myself...Iced Tea? What the hell?

But then the Snapple commercial continued and we heard that they were also getting an Indian Feast, a Dance Party, and the sum of ONE MILLION Rupees ($20,000 USD). Ok, that's pretty good.

- It was obvious that Margie and Luke were going to be eliminated after the tea debacle. Flight Time and Big Easy even gave them a hug goodbye at the Detour. What was obviously edited out of that scene was Margie saying "Will you please stay and paint it for us?"

I'm absolutely thrilled that Margie and Luke were eliminated, and I have no sympathy for Luke's crocodile tears at the end (Exhibit #2). He was his typical, sulky self, plopping himself down on the mat like a child having a tantrum. Phil made the effort on EVERY LEG in BOTH of their seasons to use sign language to give them their result specifically for Luke, and now he's refusing to even have the decency and respect to stand up and listen to Phil?

Good riddance. Now you can head back home with your mom/prom date (come on, you know that's one and the same), and keep baking together and heading off on your romantic trip that you won thanks to the other teams.

Next Week, there will be no episode. The Academy of Country Music Awards are on Sunday night. TAR returns on April 10th.

Parks and Recreation - Episode 3.08 - Camping - Review

Up until this episode, Leslie Knope had been elevated to near mythic status. A real life wonder woman, she single handedly did the work of ten people and usually succeeded with flying colors, the occasional historic gazebo aside. So naturally the Harvest Festival, curse be damned, was going to be another amazing achievement, because, well, that’s Leslie Knope. Of course you can’t elevate someone to such great heights and not expect a tumble, and tonight Leslie crashes hard.

Overall this episode was great for character development, as it primarily took the forefront while the plot set up a few conflicts then faded out nicely. Basking in post-Harvest Festival praise, Leslie and company have a blessing that turns out to be a problem. Their last idea was so successful, that the City Manager now wants some more amazing Knope ideas. Leslie decides to have a think tank camping retreat so that they put their heads together and figure out the next big idea to help Pawnee.

Before we get in to the nuts and bolts of things, I just want to make a note of the cold open and it’s implications for this and future episodes. The City Manager, in the midst of giving a speech thanking Leslie, has a heart attack and in the funniest non-funny moment ever grabs on to Leslie’s breast for support. There’s been succession talks in past episodes, with both Leslie and Ron wanting to become City Manager, and with a nice hint at his ailing health there leaves a window of opportunity for either of them to step up, and then of course change the dynamic of the gang. Currently though Chris comes back from Indianapolis to temporarily fill in, which of course leads to problems with poor poor poor Ann.

So let’s start there. Now that Ann is single her and Leslie spend more time together, which is a nice call back to earlier seasons. You don’t see a ton of nice genuine female friendships on TV, there seems to be more women fighting because of course drama sells. Despite her short tryst with the Jersey Shore rip off, Ann is still not over Chris, so Leslie suggests that Ann come along with them on their camping trip. But the bionic man decides to stop by their campsite during his nighttime run. Not sure if that guy ever sleeps. So Chris and Ann have another heart to bionic heart, and in what I hope is the greatest recurring joke ever, Ann thinks Chris wants to get back together. Damn that positivity and constant smile! Prepare to see Ann sink even further next week?

DJ ROOMBA IN THE HOUSE! Or should I say the jumbo luxury SkyMall tent. I am ashamed to say that I have considered buying a roomba just to make a DJ Roomba, oh and to terrorize my cats. Back on track though, it looks like Tom got him fixed because our favorite floor-cleaning music-blasting robot is back, along with a ton of other crap that Tom bought from SkyMall for the camping trip. All completely useless and unnecessary, as is everything in the SkyMall catalogue. Apparently Tom is the kind of person that can’t live in the woods unless it has an ice cream maker, massage chair, and of course the pop-up porta-potty. Did I mention a big screen TV too? This is kind of pathetic to our other group of rugged Pawnee residents, except to outsider Ben who didn’t bother to buy a tent. They soon join forces, and as Ben says while holding an iPad and sitting in the leather massage chair, “Camping Rules!” These two are mirror opposites of each other, yet the characters work so well together. I could see them becoming best friends, which would work well as they both don’t seem to have any.

Andy tries to impress April to get her to love camping by setting up an adorable love tent, complete with star shaped lights and rose petals, but of course screws up and is at the wrong campsite. Andy then begins an epic trek through the Indiana woods until he finds April. I’m not entirely sure what this storyline proves, other than that April likes to whine a lot about the woods, there is quite a selection of her quotes below, and that Andy is far more devoted to April than she will ever be to him. Not that we’re meant to take it that way of course, Andy is just a sweet guy who would go the extra mile for his girl.

Which brings us to the crux of the story, Leslie and her fear of peaking and the subsequent downfall. Leslie can sometimes come off as ‘too-perfect’, so this very real and very normal fear of not being able to live up to herself is a great turn for the character. We’re not used to seeing this Leslie; no plan, no back-up plan, no confidence whatsoever. It’s refreshing, but of course she wouldn’t be Leslie Knope unless it all worked out in the end. Until then though she lies and tells her coworkers that she has an awesome idea but wants to give them a chance first, in a thinly veiled attempt to solve the problem. Eventually the rest of the gang finds out, and the myth of Leslie shatters into a million pieces. Disenchanted, they all decide to leave, until they find out that Tom had been sucking power from the van to keep the Thunderdome running, along with all the crap that was in it. Forced to walk, the gang ends up at a creepy bed and breakfast run by an old lady with far too many cats. And that’s saying something, because I generally don’t think that you can have enough cats.

After a good night’s sleep, thanks to Ron locking her in a bedroom, Leslie returns fully charged with multiple bright ideas and hopefully back to the more steadfast Knope we’re used to. Overall this was another amazing Parks episode, and judging by my list below, it had a ton of hilarious quotes, I even had to leave a few off. The last scene was by far one of my favorites in the series, with the old lady playing the piano, the cavalcade of cats, Jerry happily listening to the music while stroking a cat, and a horrified Ben trying desperately to leave. This is easily the most consistently funny show on TV, and I think deserves to be names one of the greatest comedies of all time. My biggest fear is of an early demise, similar to Arrested Development, because of low ratings. So keep watching please, and tell your friends! The show has already been renewed for a fourth season, so we can breathe easy, assuming the show doesn’t get bumped again for a mid-season run like this season.

Again, sorry for the slightly delayed post! As much as I would love to have a job that entailed sitting around all day, watching my favorite TV shows, and then writing about them, that’s just not happening for me right now. Although I have to thank SpoilerTV for letting me write up my thoughts here, late as they are. SpoilerTV, supporting reviews by fans for fans!

Being Human - Episode 1.10 - Dog Eat Dog - Review

This week’s episode was quite an intense one. Written by married duo and show runners Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke, the episode primarily focuses on the relationship between Aidan and Bishop, and the history of the vampire coven. The episode was directed by the same person who directed last week’s episode, Paolo Barzman.

We finally find out about those random hanging “people” Marcus went to meet up with in Amish country…They are “The Dutch”, the Elders of the vampire community—the leader for example is 1,010 years old. They are not very impressed with the state of the coven. Rebecca is more than upset with Aidan for killing Bernie. Josh is kidnapped by vampires while preparing for a date with Nora.

And on to the analysis…

I haven’t quite decided how I feel about the flashback scenes from 50 years prior with Aidan and Bishop. These scenes definitely provide a lot of information. They were given the “old fashioned” quality by different, more grainy lighting and film, also older clothing and hair styles were utilized. We find out some important things about Bishop and Aidan. We have seen these two interact often this season, but here we get the chance to see them interact the way they did 50 years ago, when both of them are in different situations than they are in now. For example, at that time, Bishop was in love with a human nurse named Jane. Jane knew what Bishop was, but did not want to be a vampire herself. Bishop acts completely different than we have seen him so far. It was great seeing Mark Pellegrino play the part differently. Bishop was softer in manner and more timid than the way we are used to seeing him. We also got a glimpse of a different side of Aidan. One thing we have really gotten about their association is that Bishop and Aidan have really been through a lot together. There is a really strong bond between them. In the flashback scenes, we see that when Aidan threatened to abandon Bishop, Bishop showed fear over this prospect. He did not want to lose Aidan. Going back and seeing this side of Bishop does help show why he is so lenient toward Aidan now. He doesn’t want to push him away entirely. Bishop knows Aidan well enough to feel that Aidan understands that there is nowhere else he really belongs. Bishop wants Aidan back and even though this theme has been there throughout the season, we understand it more completely here.

We knew that the vampires thought very little of werewolves, I am not exactly sure why I was surprised to see that they have them go all fight club for sport. This seems in line with other vampire/werewolf mythologies where werewolves are essentially used as attack dogs for the vampires. Here there are dog fights that the vampires bet on. That they abducted Josh was important to getting him into the storyline and not having this episode completely about Aidan. The question becomes, who was the one that set it up to be Josh? Is Marcus making a play for the territory and purposely dragged out Josh to compromise Aidan and in so doing compromise Bishop? Did Bishop do it to force Aidan’s hand? My money is on Marcus planning it. The way the events played out, it didn’t really put Bishop in a very good light with the elders. After he tells the elders that the older wolf is sick, he then shows up to fight? And that happened right after Bishop told the Elders he didn’t want to send one of his vampires into the ring because it would be suicide and he didn’t have any men to waste? Bishop already seems to have allowed things to go on of which the Elders would not approve. This just made him look bad. He wasn’t following orders, and he doesn’t have full control of what is going on. We know from the flashbacks that the elders killed Bishop’s creator for these types of transgressions. We also know from the end of the episode that the Elders plan on killing Bishop…or at least that is what Bishop believes. This does seem like it is most likely the case, due to the way they treat him.

Another question with Aidan and Bishop is what exactly does it mean that Aidan is going “back to him”? What are the under vampires supposed to do? Does this put Aidan in position above Marcus? That does seem to be what was hinted before by Aidan to Marcus. With Aidan back, Bishop may actually have a chance to survive the Elder’s stay. That idea actually gives some weight to the possibility that Bishop got Josh involved to push Aidan into making a deal where he came back. If Bishop knows the Elders are gunning for him, he would need supporters himself. He doesn’t seem to overly trust Marcus. Possibly Bishop is hoping to pull Aidan back in to have his back to stop the coup. But what will Aidan do to stop the Elders from taking out Bishop? He did little things behind the scenes to try to help Josh, but nothing really overt. Could he actually make a stand right in front of the Elders?

About Josh…I could completely understand his frustration with Aidan over Aidan’s inaction. True that Aidan didn’t have much of a choice considering the sheer numbers against him if he were to do something, but one can see how Josh would feel betrayed. Sally had more confidence in Aidan. Josh seems to think that Sally’s confidence in Aidan is naïve, but the thing about Sally is that she can go anywhere. This means she has the unique opportunity to see certain things that Josh can’t see. It would seem that she would have the ability to see more of who Aidan is than Josh has. Odd then that Sally did not know about Rebecca. Sally recognized Rebecca from the snuff film, but didn’t know who she was before that or know of Aidan and Rebecca’s relationship. She did, however, see the manipulative power Rebecca has over him. I liked that Sally stood up to Rebecca. I also liked that she was there for Josh and Aidan. She was open with her thoughts on the situations, both Aidan and Rebecca’s and Aidan and Josh’s. She said what needed to be said regardless of whether or not they wanted to hear it.

Josh is still seeing Nora and is in fact preparing for a date by shucking corn outside when he is kidnapped. Side note: I like how there is care shown regarding the fact that Sally is a ghost. Here, Josh takes out one of those blue tooth ear devices to put on his ear so he doesn’t look like he is talking to himself outside. I must admit that I was ecstatic that Sally commented on the fact that people that wear them look douchy. I was so glad that fad was short lived. And we’re back—So how about that date? I don’t imagine Nora is going to be pleased she was stood up. He has a great excuse for not being there, but how is he going to explain it to her? It isn’t like he can say that a coven of vampires abducted him to participate in a dog fight. I imagine with the weight of his conscience post “first kill”, he is going to do some serious distancing from her. He will see himself as a monster now more than ever and feel he is not worthy to be with her…that he is a danger to her. We found out that Josh was attempting to find some way of controlling or curing lycantropy. He now has the notes from “the Professor” without the 15 years of dissecting experience werewolf Douglas had, also. In the end of the episode we see that he did take the notes with him when he was let go. It will be interesting to see what comes of this. Will Josh attempt to go back to medical school? Maybe he will just go for night classes to learn more about chemistry in an attempt to find a cure?

I was surprised at the end of the episode that Josh seemed so understanding of Aidan. He was very focused on the fact that he had to kill. This is of course understandable…He isn’t trying to shift the blame to Aidan for not getting him out of the situation, he just seems torn and empty from the experience. He actually appeared more worried about the fact that Aidan has agreed to go back there. I found that a little odd. I wonder if he will develop a rage against Aidan for what happened. Sally was more disgusted that Aidan was willing to go back to Bishop and the others.

A few random things we saw in this episode—vampires dying show blood and then upon actual death they “dust” almost Buffy style. Of course I am not sure how old that particular vampire was, it could just be old ones that would actually be to dust by now that actually “dust” like that. Maybe fledgling vampires only die. The werewolves are very cool looking transformed. I was very impressed. This change was handled very well, too. Move over cheesy Buffy werewolves, we have awesome digitally enhanced werewolves here! Ghosts can be dissipated with iron? That sounds Supernatural like!

So nothing from this episode is really resolved, except that Josh, who was kidnapped and for all intents and purposes would have been kept caged for sport once a month, was actually let out to go home. The Elders are still there, apparently with the intent to do in Bishop the next day, Nora was still stood up for the date, and Aidan now has to go back to work for Bishop. Luckily, we get another episode on Monday…
