This is the story of a woman who overcomes family crisis. A story of a woman losing her only son. No, I'm not referring to the sudden fake death of baby Stan, but to Jules' loss of Travis for college. Jules thinks she has a week before Travis is leaving to college, and she thinks that it is enough time for her to cope with it without having to board the crazy train. However, when Travis decides to move to his dorms a few days earlier, she fails.
The first stop on the crazy train, includes a drive down the infancy memory lane, where Jules remembers the macaroni necklace she used Travis' hands to make, at the tender age of one. Or how she used to make Travis' cry on demand by pinching him lightly (depends on who you are asking) to make the annoying people go away.
At the next stop, Jules is taking some actions as she walks into Travis in the shower and grabs him out so they could do “fun” things together. The chosen activities include sifting through a box with Travis' old body parts, getting matching toe rings, and Jules favorite: scaring Travis to death so he'll grab her very very tight.
In the meantime, other things are happening in Cougar Town. Bobby and Andy prove that their bromance overcomes cynicism, and they are as strong in love as Eric and Bentz.
Laurie (now known as Jelly Bean) is recalling her happy memories of pretending to go to college, and her love for drinking games that hasn't changed since. Later she also finds herself drawn to Jules' wonderful cleavage (which once Travis ate from!), but really, who can blame her?
Ellie (now known as Satan, because she hasn't told her neighbor, Peeping Tom, that baby Stan wasn't really dead, just so he'll keep doing stuff for her), explains to Grayson that the reason she never talks about baby Stan is because according to Andy, moms who talk about their children all the time are not sexy.
Andy however, rebels against Ellie, and tells a story about baby Stan despite Ellie's death stare. As a punishment for Andy's misbehavior, Ellie withdrawals all eye contact from him. To win Ellie's eyes back, Andy thinks he should get Ellie to talk about baby Stan as well. He thinks that in order for that to happen, baby Stan has to do something big, like walk. So he raises baby Stan up in the air but the cunning plan fails when Ellie walks into the room and sees him doing it.
Finally Ellie explains to Andy that the reason she never talks about baby Stan is because of him. So Andy, Jelly Bean and Grayson reassure Ellie that she'd never be like those neglected type of mothers who only talk about their children, because she is too evil and self absorbed for that.
Bobby as apposed to Jules is having an easier time coping with Travis' leave. But when Travis gives him his old computer, he tries to learn how to use it (with Jelly Bean's help), just so he can keep in touch with him.
On board to the last crazy train stop, Jules tries to have one last family dinner with Travis and Bobby. Only Bobby never shows up, and Jules and Travis end up fighting. Travis leaves home as soon as he can after the fight, leaving Jules sleeping creepily in his bed wearing his lavender and self doubt smelling “stud” t-shirt.
In the end Jules realizes she is a bad mother, and the change isn't just hard for her but for Travis too (it's still harder for her, though), so she and Bobby drive a whole twenty minutes to make up with Travis and get her proper meaningful glance goodbye from him.

POLL : Which of these shows will you be watching Tonight? - 30th September 2010
It’s kind of hard to write about The Good Wife. It’s a really complex show, containing many little details that are too rich to be included in any review. So I’ll give you the main things – the main story, the main conflicts, the main characters. But you should now that’s not everything about the show. In my opinion describing every single detail would be kind of offensive to the show, because it relies heavily on its viewers’ intelligence. So keep that in mind. Here we go:
The season premiere of The Good Wife starts exactly where the previous season left off. Alicia is torn between the two men in her life – her husband and her co-worker (or actually her boss). Peter, her husband, is having a press conference and as usual he needs her to be completely supportive, at least in front of the cameras. The second she is about to step up on the stage she receives a phone call by Will, her co-worker, who tells her he loves her. Alicia is holding the telephone in her hand, while looking at Peter, who awaits her on stage.
To be honest, I never really liked that cliffhanger to begin with. It looked a little bit like a cheap soap-opera trick and didn’t capture the mature and realistic spirit of the show. Thankfully, the first few minutes of the premiere managed to make everything right. Alicia didn’t answer Will’s call – the circumstances didn’t let her answer. But that doesn’t mean she is definitely sticking with Peter, she just hasn’t made her choice yet. From what I’m hearing season two will deal mostly with that particular choice.
The season opener doesn’t provide mush information on Alicia’s feelings regarding the matter. The story rather focuses on the outsider’s point of view. Will is still in love with her, although he is lacking a plan. Kalinda is telling her she should talk to him about it. Peter is trying to win her over again, to be gentle, supportive and understanding. Eli Gold is trying to sabotage her relationship with Will, while giving her advises on dealing with the press. A random TV reporter is trying to analyze her body language. And in the middle of all of that is her – Alicia Florrick. She is confused and lost and all she wants is inner peace. The situation she is in is portrayed in a really realistic and touching way. I’m glad the writers didn’t try to force the story, but gave it a space to breathe.
Aside from the love triangle, the episode contains a usual for the show stand-alone case. This time Alicia has to defend an arrogant young man charged with murder. He is a co-owner of a web site and his partner has been killed. The man pleads innocent, saying it was a government job. According to him the military killed his partner, because he posted a specific video on their website. The case looks almost lost, but Alicia is quickly changing the scale. Finding themselves in an unpleasant position, the prosecutor's office decides to sent against her Cary Agos – her former college. Cary is still holding a grudge against her and so the law court becomes and arena for more than one battle. In the end the case is resolved in an unexpected way, but the bigger war between Alicia and Cary is far from over.
Another thing that should be mentioned is the fact that Gardner & Lockhart is now merging with another law firm. Will and Diane have a new senior partner, so new alliances are starting to form. Except for Band no new lawyers have been introduced in the premiere. But we get a new investigator – a young attractive man, who soon pairs up with Kalinda as they both are collecting evidences. That sub-plot was really well written, actually. Kalinda, who was previously shown as a lesbian, is kind of attracted to him and that confuses her and makes her angry at him. I suppose that storyline will continue in the next episodes.
So, all in all, it was a fantastic premiere. It set up a few interesting storylines (not all of whom are mentioned in this review!) and contained an exiting murder trail. I am definitely looking forward to episode two!
The final episode of the actress Andreas Joy Cook embodies the character of JJ in the series Criminal Minds is broadcast tonight on CBS.

Actress Emily Deschanel,33, and writer-actor David Hornsby tied the knot in a quiet evening ceremony in front of family and friends in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles on Saturday, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.
The bride wore a pair of matching diamond and platinum scroll hair pins and drop earrings by Neil Lane.
Deschanel is currently starring in the sixth season of Bones, while Hornsby is best known for his work on FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
So, finally the so awaited season premiere begins, with the classic Previously on NCIS I love and missed so much! I liked that the intro made almost clear what we were sure during the episode: they are not going to keep that Abby-confronting-Gibbs storyline, and I very much appreciate it. Pedro Hernandez’s murder was necessary and I wouldn’t mind to discretely destroy all the evidences that prove Gibbs did it. Plus, the echoes of Paloma’s threat on Papa Gibbs… Goosebumps, dude. (Yeah, I’m that weak).

New conspiracy thriller series starring Stuart Townsend slated to premiere Spring 2011
Production on the one-hour conspiracy thriller drama, XIII commenced September 13 in Toronto and surrounding areas. Stuart Townsend (The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Queen of the Damned) headlines the series as XIII, a skilled and lethal former secret agent who can’t remember his past and sets out on a quest to uncover his true identity. The 13 episode Canada-France original series is set to premiere on Showcase in Spring 2011.
Hunted by a dark anti-government organization, XIII quickly realizes that the closer he gets to uncovering the riddle of his past life, the more complex and deadly his mission becomes. Alongside Townsend, XIII stars Aisha Tyler (24, CSI, Friends) as Jones, a top CIA operator and XIII’s past flame, Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach) as Irina, a mercenary hired by the former U.S. President to track XIII, and Caterina Murino (Casino Royale) as Sam, XIII’s trustworthy ally and love interest. Other key cast members include Greg Bryk (Saw V, Cra$h & Burn) as Amos, a national security officer, Stephen McHattie (Happy Town, 2012) as President Carrington and Ted Atherton (The Border) as Wally Sheridan, the former U.S. President and a possible traitor.
XIII is developed and produced by Prodigy Pictures and French production company Cipango, the television division of Luc Besson’s Europacorp (La Femme Nikita). In addition to airing in Canada on Showcase, the series will air on Canal Plus in France as part of their international original programming.
The creative forces behind XIII include Prodigy Pictures’ Jay Firestone, Executive Producer, along with Cipango’s Edouard De Vésinne and Thomas Anargyros. Frederic Bruneel will co-produce the series. Gil Grant (NCIS: Los Angeles, 24) wrote the pilot and is the series’ Showrunner and also an Executive Producer. Peter Mohan (Lost Girl, The Bridge) will act as Co-Executive Producer for the series along with Damien Couvreur. Duane Clark (CSI: NY, XIII: The Conspiracy) will also be a Co-Executive Producer and direct three of the 13 episodes. Other directors include Xavier Palud and Philippe Haim. Wanda Chaffey serves as Producer on the series.
XIII is based on Jean Van Hamme’s popular graphic novel of the same name, which has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide since the first volume was published 25 years ago.

Criminal Minds: If Justin Bieber could be on CSI, he can surely do a guest spot on Criminal Minds, right?
And Criminal Minds star Kirsten Vangsness has just the part for him…
"Justin can be a terrifying killer—a guy killer," Vangsness tells me. "We always have these women who are getting killed, so I think we need more guys killed."
And then she laughs, "He can kill them and then cut their hair like his. That's how we'll know it's him."
Vangsness not only plays computer expert Penelope Garcia on the CBS drama (season six begins tonight), but she's the only castmember who will also be a regular on its upcoming spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.
In other words, she is one busy woman. It's one of the reasons, as well as the passage of Prop 8, that she and fiancée Melanie Goldstein have postponed their wedding. They had originally planned on saying their vows in the spring of last year.
"We've come to the conclusion that we're going to do it in 2013—no matter what," Vangsness says.
Even if gay marriage isn't legal throughout the U.S. by then? Yup.
"Melanie wants us to go to every place that it's legal and just collect marriage certificates from places like Sweden and Mexico like people collect Disney pins," Vangsness says. "We want to put up a whole wall of them."

First off, I’d like to thoroughly congratulate this show for its Emmy wins, particularly Eric Stonestreet, who last year was a revelation as Cam/Fizbo. The show, while not my favourite comedy of the season, was certainly up there and was well deserving of its merits. So, well done!
And I enjoyed ‘The Old Wagon’, I did. I felt like they were playing it safe – a story where Mitchell and Cameron argue over something petty, Gloria getting upset with Manny for flying the coup, and the Dunphys all getting frustrated with each other in the very funny car scene.
But playing it safe isn’t always a bad thing – if they had started with an episode on the level of ‘Fizbo’, then it may have turned off new viewers who didn’t quite get the wackiness (and it paid off – Modern Family notched 12.6 million viewers). So I appreciate that this wasn’t the boldest start to the season for a good reason.
By far the best storyline of the episode was Gloria struggling to keep her son around as a new woman entered his life. What I like about ‘Modern Family’ is that it constantly puts new spins on clichéd storylines, making them feel fresh. Because Manny is such a grown up in a child’s body already, the joke takes a slightly different turn, because Manny can sort of understand the type of story they’re playing up to, without being meta.
But I enjoyed the other two storylines too – Mitchell with power tools is a funny sight gag, and my favourite line of the night was Jay’s ‘That was my Vietnam… and I was in Vietnam.’ And the Dunphys storyline was sweet too, and I totally bought the idea of Claire not wanting to let go of that rusty old banger because of what it represented. Nolan Gould continues to shine as clueless but loveable Luke, who lit up when the jar of sunshine glowed for a moment.
I don’t think the episode needed the saccharine music-y moment at the end though. I know ABC are massive fans of ‘This is how you should feel!’ music, but seeing the family laugh about the crazy day they’d had would have gotten the message across fine.
Still, a perfectly enjoyable start to the season, and certainly better than a lot of the new sitcoms starting this year.

Every week I'll post what I think were the best quotes and you can vote on your favorite, this episode was entitled "The Old Wagon". At the end of the season we'll compile a list of past winners to find the best quote.
Phil: "You can insult a lot of things about me, my hair, my voice, my balance board exercises but never insult my selling that crosses the line. Oh you don’t see that line, well that is because I just sold it".
Mitchell: "We are going to build a princess castle for Lilly. It is something that every father dreams about. And I fancy myself as a bit of a castle designer."
Cameron: "I am petrified to do this with Mitchell, he built a couple of theater sets in college and he thinks he knows everything about building."
Cameron: "If an accident does happen I hope he kills me, because I don't think I would be a very inspiring disabled person."
Gloria: "In my culture mothers are very clingy to their sons, in fact the leading cause of death among Columbian women is when their son's get married. But I am not like that I just want my Manny to be happy."
Claire: "Oh that is the year your dad and I went to the Rose Bowl."
Luke: "Mom, you look really pretty. So what happened?"
Phil: "Well Lukie, everyone changes over times. Parts of your mom aren't what they used to be."
Luke: "I mean during the game."
Phil: "We got our butts kicked by Penn State. Angela Lansbury was the grand marshal."
Phil: "Well you can't be in sales and not remember people's names. Like the other day I meet this guy named Carl except for he had a Grateful Dead t-shirt on and what is a band like the Grateful Dead, Fish. Where do fish live? In the ocean. What else lives in the ocean? Coral. Hello, Corrraalll."
Luke: "Dad you can do this."
Phil: "Okay he looked like the drummer from Foreigner, a foreigner is from France, France rhymes with ants, ants ruin a picnic, what's up Nick?"
Phil: "Hey honey guess what? You're going to be eating some humble pie stuffed with a bit of crow and a big side of sorry. Because I just did, in your face girl with a negative tattoo."
Luke (when Claire walks away): "Wow, someone doesn't like to lose."
Jay: "That was my Vietnam and I was in Vietnam."
Cameron: "Pardon me, I prefer the Dijon Champaign to the plain yellow."
Mitchell: "I know I am not the handiest guy but I want to be able to look outside and say that there is a little bit of me in that princess castle."
Phil: "Wow this place has really changed. You know what that Starbucks used to be?"
Alex: "An orange grove."
Phil: "No it was a Burger King. You can see it in a bot of the architecture."
Phil (when their car rolls off a cliff): "I am just be realistic here but I think we are going to have to lower the asking price."
Welcome back to Cougar Town. You are about to join the extended Cobb family as they are all sitting around having a party in their mouthes (because of all the red wine they are drinking, of course), and playing a drinking game called movie mashup (it's more of a game that is played while drinking, than a drinking game really). During the game, one has to give descriptions of two movies that share the same word in their title, while the other participants have to mash the two movies up using the shared word. Sounds easy right? I know. Not for Jules though. Poor Jules was the only one not guessing anything. Not even when she woke Grayson in the middle of the night, inflicting him pain, just so he'll help her solve one mashup.
As the time passes, Travis leave for collage is getting closer, and Jules doesn't feel she can handle it all by herself. She decides to ask for help. Sadly it is from the wrong person as the shrink she finds is a psychopath herself. Glenn, the shrink, tries to make an emotional connection with Jules by sharing stories of her own experiences with her darling baby Gabriel.
Jules is not the only one going crazy, as she drags Grayson along the path. Grayson feels he can't handle all Jules – all the time, and he asks her for a twenty four hours break. Naturally, this only makes Jules worse, so she makes Grayson come with her to see what Glenn thinks. Only, when Glenn sides with Grayson, Jules is left with only one choice, stalk Glenn some more. This time, at her day off outside her Yoga class with her accomplice Elli. Unfortunately, Glenn sees Jules first and makes a run for it hitting a car in the process. By this time, both Jules and Elli notice her. Elli sees this opportunity as a way to gain her almost job back, as the person who listens to Jules problems and stops her from doing stupid things. She tells Jules that Glenn is crazy, because she didn't intend to leave a note on the injured car after she hit it.
Although Jules has a hard time believing all of this at first, she is finally convinced that Glenn is crazy when she finds out that the dear Gabriel she was referring to all the time, was just a dog. A loving one, a companion no doubt, but still, just a dog.
Elli regaining her throne, stops Jules from throwing herself desperately on Grayson, asking for his return. It pays off for Jules, as Grayson is back before the twenty four hours are over, helping Jules finally win at movie mashup.
Meanwhile at the other side of town, Travis is telling Laurie that she will miss him when he goes off to collage, because he makes her feel younger. However Laurie claims that although Travis is indeed young, he acts like a much older man. They place a bet saying that whoever can stay awake the longest will win $20. Laurie cheats, because she is only doing this to watch Travis suffer, but in the end she admits how much she will miss him.
Bobby too, has a difficulty expressing his emotions. For him it is regarding Jules and Grayson. He feels that he has no one to talk to about it, and therefore he takes it out on a park bench with Jules' picture on it. A picture that Andy likes especially, as he always eats his lunch next to it. Andy appalled by the act of vandalism, cleans the sign up, but it doesn't stay like this for long. While Andy, Bobby and Grayson conduct a stakeout near the bench, an anarchist does it again. This time though, Grayson discovers it was Bobby all along. Bobby confesses his feelings, so in an act of kindness, Grayson comes to his boat to support and listen to him. Aw.
This is all for now, until next time, still in Cougar Town.
The Hollywood Reporter said that Modern Family’s season premiere had 12.6 million viewers, which is 19% higher than last fall and the biggest rating ever. If you’re like me, you think this is well deserved, because Modern Family has to be one of my favorite television shows ever. Ever.

ANATOMY OF A RELATIONSHIP
An Episodic Examination Of Huddy In Love
Welcome back, House fans, to Season Seven. Wow, and what a long summer it has been. When last we left our fearless hero he was finally macking on the woman he loves, much to his delight and surprise. We actually return seconds after that moment as House and Cuddy stand in his bedroom holding hands.
I have to say I was a bit worried about this season premiere. Excited, but worried. See, as a hardcore Huddy (hey, backoff, anti’s) I was thrilled that The Powers That Be (TPTB) had finally let nature take its course. After all, you can only dance around the subject so long before the dancing, in and of itself, is jumping the shark. So, I was happy to have them together. But I was worried that our season premiere would be an hour-long fanfiction. Now, I don’t have anything against them. In fact, I have been known to publish a few myself, but fanfiction is there because it portrays aspects of the House universe we normally don’t get to see: namely House and Cuddy together. And most fanfictions are highly romanticized and end happily ever after. And that’s not House. My concern was that Katie Jacobs and David Shore would bow down to the very vocal Huddies out there and give us a fanfiction episode. I shouldn’t have worried. Although KJ and DS may have given a slight curtsy, they certainly didn’t bow down. House and Cuddy, may be together, but it’s definitely not going to be a happy ending any time soon.
The opening reeked of fanfiction, but I loved it. I needed to see those two finally get not only what they needed but what they wanted, too. You lie, Mr. Jagger. The two mature adults who have known each other for 20 years and know everything about the other took the time to sweetly enjoy each other. Oh, sure there were a few other fanfic-y moments, but they were balanced out with true House moments.
See, even from the first moment of afterglow, there’s an emergency at the hospital. House doesn’t want to share Cuddy and “handles” the situation for her. When he realizes it’s a bigger issue than expected he manipulates and maneuvers Cuddy and his team into making his day of nakedness still happen with Cuddy. He knows that the hospital and its reputation is hugely significant to Cuddy. It’s her other baby, but he still decides for the both of them that they are more important. That’s what House does. He decides the importance level for people around him based on his own ranking of importance. The thing is, I don’t think House even realizes that he’s manipulating Cuddy as he goes behind her back trying to solve the crisis at the hospital. This unawareness of that habit does not bode well for a successful relationship.
Both confront the fact that maybe neither is ready to announce their union just yet. Wilson tries twice to contact House before finally breaking in to the apartment. House won’t answer Wilson’s phone call, telling Cuddy Wilson will cramp their style. Also, House explains, he wasn’t sure if she wanted to go public yet. Cuddy realizes that maybe it’s House who doesn’t want it to get out. Cuddy admits she wouldn’t have come to House’s apartment if she wasn’t ready to go public, but then when Wilson breaks into the apartment she hides from him. I think they both know the risks of going public are equal to the risks of staying private. The fact that they even have a relationship to hide now is enough to deal with let alone involving others.
We also learn that House knows A LOT about Cuddy. He’s been watching for years; gathering information to be used at a later date. We knew he did this. He knew that the pharmacist was a psychopath by watching her open the mail. He was saving that info for manipulations in the future. But we learn that he’s been collecting information about Cuddy just to collect it. He knows her dream vacation location. He knows how to tell when she’s lying. He admits to “being intimate” with a photograph of her. Cuddy has been a larger part of his world then at first suspected.
I was disappointed that the super-strong Cuddy didn’t completely return. She’s been a bit timid recently due to guilt, love, whatever, and I was hoping that by bravely making the first step toward House she would again be able to stand up to him. She did at times. She boldly asked him why he never told her and still hasn’t told her he loves her. She puts her foot down on postponing the dream vacation. She also refused to let House deflect or shut up after he brought up his belief that their relationship was doomed. She sat him down and made him talk. She is now fully vested in this thing and is insisting that House be the same. Yet, her backbone didn’t fully return. I wasn’t all that happy when after House tells her he’s still a jerk, that all of their day together was the result of high emotions from their recent experiences and that he will still be a jerk and do jerky things to her she says, okay. I mean, really, she deserves better than that. She could have asked for a bit of leeway; a small amount of sensitivity from her lover. Instead, she tells him he’s the most incredible man she’s ever known and even if they crash and burn and he remains a total jerk he’s still the most incredible man she’s ever know. The Huddy part of my heart sighed heavily, but the “I am Woman” side yelled at her to go dig out her spine from under the love bed.
But I haven’t seen the timeline for the episodes to come. I’m hoping that TPTB remember that Cuddy knows House and his ways better than anyone else. Cuddy has the skills and knowledge to work House the same way he works her. She’s also got the extra advantage of having funbags and a squish mitten. Maybe, just maybe, Cuddy realizes that right now the best tactic is to be positive and build up her man; help him to recognize and be comfortable with being happy and in love. Then she can edge House to the ledge so he can take the leap to becoming a bit more of the “ideal companion” she and her daughter needs. It worked to get him to admit his love for her at the end of the episode, didn’t it? Whew. Can you smell that? It’s the smell of manipulation. And again, that’s not a great way to build a relationship.
BUT THAT’S HOUSE. See, readers. The snarky, sneaky underbody of the House universe did exist in that soft-focus, low-lit fanfiction-y episode. It was actually pretty smart to get this stuff out of the way. The entire episode deftly set up the bigger issues of how they could make the relationship work, why they wanted the relationship to work and if they wanted to make the relationship work. By the end of the episode we knew that these two screwed-up people really do love each other. They really want to make this relationship work, but they both realize that the odds are heavily against them. The final scene of Cuddy and House on opposite sides of the door told the whole story: first happiness; then confusion; and finally worry. House does not have a successful history when it comes to happiness. It has never been lasting for him and he has no reason to believe this time will be any different. House will need to commit to either making the changes to ensure the relationship works or enjoying the relationship until it crashes upon the rocks of reality. It’s all up to him. That’s why the show is called HOUSE.
The medical drama played second banana definitely, but we’ll forgive them this time. If you take a minute to find the links between the medical drama and the personal drama, as all House episodes have, we might have a sneak peak of the future. The doctor gets sick and leaves the hospital, but is dragged back to the hospital because of duty. The disease and/or meds make his high and happy for a while, but the cause is figured out and he goes back to being the “boring” person he was before, dedicating his life to his work. Hmmmmmm.
Thanks for reading. I will be continuing the dissection of the Huddy relationship after each episode this season. Any comments can be left here or sent to beforeitwascool@cox.net.
The season opener starts with a wedding, but we’re left in the dark about who’s wedding it really is. All we know is that Ted and Marshall are attending, and it’s later revealed that one of the them is the best man, and that Ted meets The Mother there.
The present day scene starts with Barney barging into the bar to find Ted, and Barney’s first lines are “It’s a sad day in New York, Ted. A sad day indeed. Do you know what I saw on my way in here? A girl in a sweater. And you know what that means, the season of exposed skin is over!” I don’t know about you, but I’ve missed Barney over the summer. His over the top lines, always make me laugh out loud. Ted doesn't seem to care about what Barney has to say, as usual, but he also seems to have something else on his mind and Barney gets him to fess up.

Here's a fan review of the latest episode of The Vampire Diaries. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Game on. With “Brave New World”, The Vampire Diaries achieves the near impossible task of maintaining the high quality of its season premiere. The episode is a tense and action-packed follow-up that continues to accelerate the narrative forward, for what is shaping up to be an exceptionally strong sophomore season.
Picking up almost immediately after the season premiere’s chilling ending, “A Brave New World” begins with Caroline awakening in the hospital after her frightening encounter with Katherine. As Caroline struggles with her newfound strength and temptations as a newborn vampire, Damon and Stefan attempt to uncover the Lockwood family secret. These two storylines eventually converge at the annual Mystic Falls Carnival where Elena is hoping to escape all the supernatural-drama surrounding her life.
After the intense craziness that was the last episode, it was nice for the series to shift gears a little and focus on one of the more neglected characters of last season. Caroline has always been an incredibly likable and endearing character, thanks to the charismatic Candice Accola and her strong chemistry with Matt (an equally likable and endearing character), but she’s always had little to do. This season seems determined to fix that problem by pulling the character into the supernatural world that’s at the heart of most of the series’ storylines.
Caroline’s transformation was riveting to watch – these scenes ranging from being rather comedic (the scenes where Caroline attempts to hypnotize the nurse) to genuinely horrific (pretty much all the scenes set at the carnival) over the course of the episode.
In both narrative and style, this episode reminded me a lot of “Haunted” (S1 E07). Thanks to the carnival setting of the later scenes, there was definitely an eerie parallel to the vampiric transformation of Vikki Donovan (a fact that’s even mentioned by Damon in the episode). The scene between Matt and Bonnie where Matt voiced his concerns over Caroline’s recent strange behavior was also incredibly reminiscent of a scene from “Haunted” where Matt runs into Elena after she has just witnessed Stefan kill Vikki. In both scenes, Matt is voicing his concerns regarding the sudden strange behaviour of someone he loves dearly, to a friend who clearly knows a lot more about what is going on then he does.
One of the most likely reasons the episode’s writer Brian Young seems to be trying to evoke parallels between “Haunted” and “Brave New World” is so the audience can subconsciously connect Caroline to Vikki (both were characters that had little self-control as humans and are now suddenly forced to attempt to restrain themselves against even stronger urges). By connecting Caroline’s plight with Vikki’s, we (the audience) are more likely to conclude that Caroline is in real danger because Vikki’s plight ended in her death, thus making the episode much more suspenseful because we are well aware of how things could end.
There were so many amazing scenes to comment on but there were definitely two scenes that I found particularly noteworthy. The hallway confrontation between Damon and Caroline was certainly a long time coming and I for one was incredibly happy to finally see Caroline confront Damon over the way he abused her in the early episodes of the series. Props to Accola because Caroline was a serious bad-ass in this scene and even her corny exit-line (“You suck”) worked – the line coming across as a nice touch to remind us that even though Caroline might be physically different, deep down she’s still the sweet and kind-of-daft girl we’ve grown to love. And some major props should also go out to Ian Somerhalder, because the expression on Damon’s face when Caroline mentions Katherine was perfect.
The other scene that really deserves a mention was Bonnie’s attack on Damon. The scene was tense and Elena’s attempt to save Damon brings forth a number of questions regarding why – after everything that happened last episode between them – she was still inclined to save him. Does Elena still see some humanity left in him after all? Regardless of the answer, Dobrev handled the entire scene superbly. Her deliver of Elena’s tearful justification to Bonnie on why she saved Damon (“This isn’t us. This can’t be us.”) was flawless.
Despite “Brave New World” being incredibly strong overall, there were some problems with the episode, particularly with the pacing of the Lockwood storyline. One of the strongest elements of this series has always been its fast pace, so it’s really unfortunate for the series to suddenly stumble on this. Simply put, the storyline is starting to drag – the series first alluded to Tyler’s family secret in its tenth episode. Fourteen episodes and many many months later, most of the audience is already well aware of the fact that Tyler is a werewolf. So why is it taking Elena, Stefan, and Damon this long to figure it out? Considering that the next episode is titled “Bad Moon Rising”, there is hope that this meandering plot might be properly addressed sooner rather than later.
It seems that even in the few missteps the episode did take, there was still a lot to enjoy. Even a pathetically banal scene at the end of the episode with Stefan and Elena sharing a kiss on top a Ferris wheel has some merit behind it. Despite the corniness surrounding the moment, the scene successfully accomplished a satisfying and appropriate ending to Elena’s episodic arc. Elena arriving to the conclusion that her life was only going to get even more complicated at that very moment, was refreshing. With that simple line – It’s not going to get any easier, is it? – Elena seems to be acknowledging that she and those she loves will never have simple, danger-free lives so it’s pointless to pretend otherwise. I really commend the show for never losing itself in these lighter, romantic scenes. There is a much larger picture here then just who-loves-who and the show constantly reminds us of that.
One of the biggest problems in the first season were how removed many of the supporting characters (particularly Matt, Jenna, Caroline, and Tyler) felt from the main storylines. It seems that with this episode, the series seems to be really committed to fixing this, giving Caroline and Tyler (two peripheral characters last season) much more pivotal roles in the last two episodes. If the series continues to maintain this high level of excellence and continues to focus on fixing some of the problems that plagued last season, then The Vampire Diaries’ sophomore effort could quite easily surpass its excellent first season. Here’s hoping.
