-Ratings Breakdown:
Football-ignited NBC won this first Sunday of the 2010-11 season care of the New York Jets at Miami, which averaged an approximate 12.9 rating/20 share in the overnights for the primetime portion (from 8:30-11 p.m.). Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Sunday Night Football (NBC): New York Jets at Miami
8:30 p.m.: 12.1/19 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 13.3/20 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 13.3/20 (#1)
10:00 p.m.: 12.9/20 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 13.1/21 (#1)

Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game Football Night in America as follows:

Football Night in America
7:00 p.m. – part one: 2.2/ 4 (#4)
7:30 p.m. – part two: 3.9/ 7 (#3)
8:00 p.m. – part three: 8.4/14 (#2)

CBS got a lift courtesy of an approximate 45-minute football overrun, which means that individual program results for the network are estimated. With that in mind, here is how CBS fared by half hour:

CBS/Sunday
7:00 p.m. – Football: 14.7/26 (#1)
7:30 p.m. – Football: 15.1/26 (#1) / 60 Minutes (season premiere): 10.4/17 (#1)
8:00 p.m. – 60 Minutes (season premiere): 10.5/17 (#1)
8:30 p.m. – 60 Minutes (season premiere): 10.5/16 (#2) / The Amazing Race (season premiere): 8.2/12 (#2)
9:00 p.m. – The Amazing Race (season premiere): 7.1/10 (#3)
9:30 p.m. – The Amazing Race (season premiere): 7.0/10 (#3)
10:00 p.m. – The Amazing Race (season premiere): 7.8/12 (#2) / Undercover Boss (season premiere): 6.7/10 (#3)
10:30 p.m. – Undercover Boss (season premiere): 7.2/12 (#2)

Keep in mind that The Amazing Race was 90 minutes, and the expected solid performance among adults 18-49 lands it in the winners circle.

Over at ABC, the two-hour season-premiere of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition averaged a 4.8/ 8 in the overnights from 7-9 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC): season premiere
7:00 p.m.: 3.6/ 6 (#3)
7:30 p.m.: 4.1/ 7 (#3)
8:00 p.m.: 5.2/ 8 (#3)
8:30 p.m.: 6.3/ 9 (#3)

One year earlier, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition kicked-off with an almost identical 5.0/ 8 on Sept. 27, 2009.

Next on ABC was the seventh season-premiere of Desperate Housewives at a second-place 9.2/13 at 9p.m. Comparably, that outdelivered the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition by 46 percent. And it beat the year-ago season-opener (8.0/12 on Sept. 27, 2009) by 15 percent in the overnights. With stronger lead-in support, season five of Brothers & Sisters opened with a 7.0/11 at 10 p.m., nine percent above one year earlier. Comparably, Brothers & Sisters tied CBS’ Undercover Boss for second in the time period.

Over in the world of Sunday night Fox animation, two repeat episodes of The Simpsons led into season 22 of the longest running animated sitcom in the history of television, and it was fourth in the overnights with a 5.1/ 8 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that increased by 13 percent from the year-ago season-opener (4.5/ 7 on Sept. 27, 2010) and it is expected to score among the target young demographics. Next on Fox was the second season-premiere of The Cleveland Show (#4: 4.2/ 6 at 8:30 p.m. -- 18 percent below its year-ago season-premiere), followed by the one-hour season-premiere of Family Guy at an also fourth-place 6.0/ 9 from 9-10 p.m. Two reasons why Family Guy is labeled a winner:

1. Overnight growth out of The Cleveland Show was 43 percent.
2. Growth from the year-ago season-opener (5.5/ 8 on Sept, 27, 2009) was nine percent.
