    NBC: +21, CW: +12, ABC: + 2, CBS: – 6, Fox: -36

    —–

    -Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “Modern Family” (ABC), “Criminal Minds” (CBS), “Law & Order: SVU” (NBC), “Chicago PD” (NBC)

    -Losers (excluding repeats):
“2 Broke Girls” (CBS), “Second Chance” (Fox), “American Crime” ABC)

    —–

    Ratings Breakdown:
NBC, a network with clear momentum at present, led this second Wednesday in January in the household overnights with its older skewing combination of “The Mysteries of Laura” (#2: 4.9 rating/7 share), “Law & Order: SVU” (#3: 5.5/ 9) and “Chicago PD” (#1: 5.4/ 9). If NBC really wants to make inroads next season, shifting “The Mysteries of Laura” to Friday would certainly be compatible with “Dateline” and could compete with the CBS dramas.

In series premiere news, Fox drama “Second Chance” was off to a sluggish start with a fourth-place 3.1/ 5 in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 58 percent below the 7.3/11 for “Empire” in this time period one year earlier. Overnight retention for “Second Chance” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of “American Idol” (6.9/11) was only 45 percent. And there was a loss of 12 percent in the second half-hour (3.3/ 5 to 2./9/ 5). Considering most new series drop 10 to 20 percent in week two, you may not want to get too used to “Second Chance.”

Overall, “American Idol” scored a 6.6/11 from 8-9 p.m., which was 15 percent below the 7.8/12 one year earlier.

Elsewhere, CBS finished second overall with its line-up of “2 Broke Girls” (#4: 4.2/ 7), the final season of “Mike & Molly” (#3: 4.5/ 7), “Criminal Minds” (#2: 5.7/ 9) and freshman medical drama “Code Black” (#2: 4.2/ 7), which bested competing “American Crime” on ABC (3.2/ 6) by 31 percent. Comparatively, “American Crime” slipped by six percent from its weak season-opener one week earlier (3.4/ 6), and that translated into only 4.72 million viewers and a 1.2 rating/4 share in adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). But ABC loves “American Crime,” and there is every reason to expect a third season.

    Earlier in the evening on ABC was the 8-10 p.m. sitcom rotation of “The Middle” (#3: 4.8/ 8), “The Goldbergs” (#4: 4.0/ 6), which always resonates in adults 18-49, “Modern Family” (#1: 5.8/ 9) and “black-ish” (#3: 4.1/ 6).

The CW capped off the night with encore telecasts of “The Flash” (#5: 0.9/ 1) and “Arrow” (#5: 0.9/ 1).
