Prime Video is bringing one of comedy’s most recognizable characters back to the screen this summer, but instead of returning to the courtroom, Elle travels back to the years before Elle Woods became a Harvard law student.
Set to premiere July 1, the new series acts as a prequel to Legally Blonde, focusing on Elle during high school and exploring the moments that helped shape her personality, confidence and outlook on life. While the original film introduced viewers to a polished college senior determined to prove herself, Elle looks at a younger version of the character who is still figuring out who she wants to become.
The series stars Lexi Minetree in the lead role, taking over from Reese Witherspoon, whose performance turned Elle Woods into a pop culture favorite in the early 2000s. Witherspoon remains involved behind the scenes as an executive producer, helping guide the series as it expands the Legally Blonde universe for television.
Rather than simply trying to recreate the original movie, Elle appears more interested in telling a traditional coming-of-age story through the lens of a character audiences already know. This version of Elle is navigating friendships, family expectations and the pressures of fitting in while holding onto the upbeat personality that would later define her.
One of the show’s biggest changes is its setting. Instead of the bright California atmosphere associated with Legally Blonde, the series reportedly places Elle in Seattle during the 1990s, giving the show a very different energy. That contrast could help the prequel stand apart visually while also putting Elle in situations that challenge her optimistic worldview.
The cast also includes June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott as Elle’s parents, alongside a younger ensemble playing classmates and friends who become part of her early life. Early previews suggest the series will mix comedy and teen drama while leaning heavily into ’90s nostalgia, from fashion and music to the overall aesthetic.

Even with the new setting and younger cast, the heart of the franchise still seems intact. What made Legally Blonde resonate wasn’t just its humor or style, it was the way Elle consistently proved people wrong without changing who she was. The prequel looks ready to explore how she developed that self-assurance in the first place.
That approach could give the series broader appeal beyond fans of the films. While longtime viewers will likely enjoy the references and callbacks, Elle also has the opportunity to work as a standalone teen drama centered on identity, ambition and learning not to underestimate yourself.
There’s also obvious pressure that comes with revisiting such a well-known character. Elle Woods remains one of the defining comedy protagonists of her era, and any attempt to revisit the franchise was always going to face scrutiny. But by focusing on a younger, less polished version of the character, the series may avoid feeling like a simple imitation of the films.
If successful, Elle could become more than just a nostalgia project. It has the chance to deepen a character audiences already love while introducing her story to a new generation of viewers.
