Chicago Fire - Crime Of Passion - Review : I’m The Brains Of This Whole Operation

This episode of Chicago fire brought so much to it that I have had to watch this episode more than once to remember exactly what happened in each part of the episode. It felt like there was so much change that happened in such a short period of time for pretty much everyone in Firehouse 51.

Starting with Vasquez’s storyline this episode, I have absolutely no clue where they are taking Violet and him. Or for that matter where they are taking him and Novak if that is even still on the table. The locker-room conversation between Novak and Violet felt like two people lying whilst also knowing that the other person was lying too.

I truly can’t tell if they are wanting to make this a love triangle but currently it appears that at least Vasquez is leaning slightly more towards Violet. Personally I would prefer him to be leaning towards Lizzie because I think one, she deserves a stable relationship which he can probably give her and two because Violet needs a break from firehouse men. I want her to be able to find happiness outside of a man. I guess we will have to wait to find out what is going to unfold between the three of them.

Moving onto the fire investigation. It definitely wasn’t the forefront storyline of the episode like it was last episode as we got to see a little bit more of other storylines, however it did give us the satisfaction of seeing them catch the man responsible for nearly killing three people. I loved that we got to see Cruz back, I really missed him in the last episode. He has been the king of one liners this season and his “ I’m the brains of this whole operation” really made me laugh. I think it was perfect for Cruz to be the one by Severide’s side in solving the case.

My jaw literally dropped to the floor when Mouch got told that he was being moved to Firehouse 40 permanently and effective immediately. I know it won’t stay that way for long (at least I hope it doesn’t) but it really doesn’t shock me that City Hall took the easy way out and kept him working after the article came out. Side notes - the difference between the two phones when Herrmann and Mouch showed the article made me burst out laughing, we love Herrmann living like it’s 20 years ago still. I am looking forward to seeing how this shake up affects the team and any future budget cuts that may happen. Maybe we could get to see a certain previous Chief come back to help his old house.

Now onto what I felt was the most heart-breaking storyline of the episode, Isaiah leaving Stella and Kelly. It was such a tough watch to see both Stella and Kelly going through another loss, not only that but they were going through it alone. Stella’s face when Isaiah was reconnecting with Lydia, you could tell she knew that she was losing him. I really wasn’t a fan of how disconnected Stella and Kelly felt this episode, and as much as their fight was about Isaiah, I definitely think there were some other underlying issues.

The final scene of this episode actually had me crying along with Severide. Him thinking that the nurse said Goodbye instead of Goodnight was awful but what really got me was him saying “don’t go”. There was so much raw emotion there and you could tell he wasn’t just talking to Van Meter.

These last couple episodes have been very Severide heavy, and I am honestly so thankful for that because Taylor Kinney brings such a deep emotional side to Severide. You really feel like you are watching someone you know struggle through these moments. I also think it is very powerful to show a strong stoic man have emotional moments, something I have always adored about this show. I can’t wait to see what is in store for next week!
