Morgan Kohan on Maggie’s Quiet Grief, Strength, and What’s Ahead in Sullivan’s Crossing Season 3

Sullivan’s Crossing is back for Season 3, and the premiere episode, titled “New Beginnings,” wastes no time reminding viewers that Maggie Sullivan’s heart is still healing. Actress Morgan Kohan, who plays the deeply empathetic and resilient Maggie, sat down with us to reflect on the premiere, Maggie’s emotional arc, and what fans can expect this season.

From the moment we reunite with Maggie, it’s clear something is simmering beneath her composed exterior. Kohan calls the premiere “a soft landing,” explaining that the episode is less about high drama and more about subtle emotional undercurrents. “It’s like a quiet ache,” she says, describing Maggie’s grief. “It brings her people closer to her.”

And Maggie’s people are a crucial part of her healing. “Home is everything to Maggie,” Kohan explains. “It’s not about the place—it’s the people. She’s fallen apart and been put back together there. It never fails her.” That groundedness in the Crossing becomes even more important this season, as viewers learn Maggie is quietly mourning a miscarriage, a loss not revealed explicitly until mid-episode.

Kohan’s performance in the first half of the episode is carefully restrained, capturing the way people often function through grief without voicing it. “You just carry on,” she says. “But a different part of you is maybe put to the side.” For Maggie, that part eventually breaks through in a beautifully written and emotionally raw scene with Frank (Tom Jackson), who offers comfort in a metaphor about a butterfly’s transformation. It’s a standout moment—Kohan credits Jackson’s performance: “If you’re looking at Tom Jackson and believing the words coming out of your mouth, that will happen.”

The butterfly itself becomes a recurring symbol throughout the episode, culminating in a quiet, touching moment as one lands on Maggie’s hand. Yes, Kohan confirms, the butterfly was planned, but she approached the scene with openness: “You just let whatever happens surprise you.”

While Maggie and Cal (Chad Michael Murray) share romantic moments in the premiere, their dynamic is more emotionally nuanced than ever. Maggie’s hesitance around intimacy, even with someone she loves, feels deeply authentic. “Frank is the safest of safe places for her,” Kohan says. “With Cal, it’s still new. And maybe she didn’t have the words for it yet.”

Despite everything Maggie’s endured, Kohan assures fans this won’t be a season of unrelenting sorrow. “There are happy moments,” she says. “We get to see Maggie be the support for other people a bit more this season. She and Cal get together and we watch that relationship blossom.”

And yes, Cal will have his own set of struggles this year. Kohan is looking forward to Maggie stepping into a more supportive role in their relationship: “That’s what a true relationship is—being able to switch support and be there for each other. She’s more than happy to take that on.”

As for what else fans can expect in Season 3, Kohan teases a season filled with a tapestry of love stories at different stages: “Some new love, some old love, and the different challenges that come up along the way. I think everyone will see a bit of themselves in that.”

When asked to describe Maggie and Cal’s relationship this season in three words, Kohan grins: “A little saucy, supportive, and sweet.” That’s exactly the energy fans have been hoping for.

Season 3 may be titled New Beginnings, but for Maggie, it’s also about finding her footing again, choosing to live, to love, and to grow—even when carrying pain. And with Kohan leading the way, Maggie’s journey remains as deeply human and quietly powerful as ever.
