Why You Should Be Watching All Creatures Great and Small: The British Series That Feels Like Home

One of the most remarkable accomplishments for a TV show is its ability to craft a world that viewers feel a genuine sense of belonging to – not just wishing you could live there, but feeling as though a part of you already does. From the moment the opening credits of All Creatures Great and Small start rolling, it feels as if you are on your way home. You can almost picture yourself driving the last mile in your car (probably a Rover) before finally arriving at Skeldale House where you will be welcomed by the warmth and care of your chosen family. At the latest by the time Mrs. Hall puts the kettle on and Siegfried is, once again, looking for his misplaced pipe, you know that you have arrived: You are home, and for a little while, the world is just as it should be.

With a 99% score on the Tomatometer and 8.6 on IMDb, it’s clear that I’m just one of many whose heart has been won over by All Creatures Great and Small. This British TV series is a new adaptation of James Herriot’s beloved novels about a country veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales, brilliantly bringing to life both the spirit of the region and the era it is set in (the 1930s and 40s).

Still on the fence? Here are six reasons why this heartwarming series deserves a spot on your watchlist:

Characters You’ll Love Instantly

By the second episode, chances are you’ll be smitten with at least three of the five main characters. Whether it’s Siegfried, the brilliant yet grumpy vet whose gruff exterior hides a soft heart or Mrs. Hall who may be introduced as the housekeeper, but is undeniably the matriarch of Skeldale House – nurturing, kind, and unafraid to put people in their place when needed. It might also be Tristan, Siegfried’s younger brother, a charming rascal balancing his vet studies with a love for a good time. Or maybe it is Siegfried’s assistant and future surgery partner James who is almost too nice for his own good and heads over heels in love with Helen a sharp-witted, young woman with a deep connection to the Yorkshire countryside. The characters feel authentic and win viewers over in particular because of their flaws and imperfections, making them relatable and deeply endearing.

What truly captivates the audience, however, is the characters’ relationships with one another. Whether it’s Siegfried and Mrs. Hall subtly skirting around their (very obvious) feelings for each other or Siegfried and Tristan bickering like only siblings can, their interactions are heartfelt, genuine, and endlessly entertaining – leaving the audience eager for more.

Majestic Beasts

The animals in All Creatures Great and Small are not just background props. They are more than just part of the scenery. From the loyal dogs at Skeldale, regal but stubborn cows in the Dales to Siegfried’s beloved rat, Volonel, each creature brings humor, warmth, and very often, deeply emotional moments that will leave you in tears. In particular Tricki-Woo, a spoiled Pekinese, steals the spotlight with hilarious antics. However, no matter which scene or what animal, every encounter honors the series’ core principle: The animal always comes first.

Timeless Themes

The themes All Creatures Great and Small delves into are timeless and resonate across generations and countries: love, friendship, loss, resilience and the effects of war. What is probably one of the show’s most beloved aspects, though, is its focus on the theme of community. It highlights the fundamental human need to belong — to be part of something greater than oneself. At a time in which the world seemingly becomes more and more individualistic with each passing day, this celebration of community feels deeply comforting. The people living at Skeldale House exemplify this sense of community. And even though the majority of the characters on the show are not related by blood, and come from different walks of life – a distinction that carried more weight in the 1930s and ’40s – they are undeniably a family, offering unwavering support and care for one another.

Feel-Good Escapism

Let’s face it: the world is a chaotic place that is becoming more overwhelming by the day. All Creatures Great and Small offers the perfect escape: a nostalgic retreat to a time where kindness and community take center stage. It were simpler times, however, not in the sense that it was easier. After all people are still dealing with the aftermath of the Great War (World War I) and World War II is looming just around the corner. Life as it is portrayed on the show just seems more straightforward, offering a comforting contrast to today’s many complexities humanity has created for itself. Every episode of All Creatures brilliantly combines humor, heartfelt moments, and breathtaking views. Watching the show will leave you smiling even long after the episode ends.

Dedicated Cast & Crew

The success of All Creatures Great and Small is only partially attributed to the stories it tells. What makes the show truly shine is the dedication and passion of the remarkable individuals both in front and behind the camera. Filmed far from flashy Hollywood, the series thrives on authenticity. Every performance, no matter how small or grand, feels genuine. The attention to detail, from the way the animals are treasted and cared for to the lovingly recreated sets, takes the viewer straight back to 1930s Yorkshire. But more than anything it’s the undeniable chemistry between the main characters that really brings the show to life. It’s almost impossible to picture this series being as impactful with any other actors in these roles.

Breathtaking Yorkshire Scenery (and That Accent!)

Few shows manage to transport you to a place and time like All Creatures does. It’s almost as if the Yorkshire Dales are not just a setting, they are more like an additional character. Those rich green fields, the hills and stone cottages create an idyllic escape, perfectly complemented by the various charming British accents. This show will have you wanting to pack your bags and jump on a train to experience the stunning beauty of the Yorkshire Dales for yourself. It is certainly on my 2025 bucket-list!
