The Neighborhood - Welcome to Soul Food - Review

There's nothing better than a double date night between some friends, especially if Dave can hang out with his favourite person, Calvin. In Monday's episode of The Nighborhood, after being rejected from a place Gemma wanted to stay and eat, the Butlers take the Johnsons in a soul food restaurant in town.

Everything is cool, the place seems to be made for the Butlers - it's full of black people, Dave laments the food is too spicy, but who cares if Calvin can joke around? When Calvin is wowed by his meal, he learns that the head chef is white - the surprise in his face! There's a problem here. We've already seen Calvin being super jealous about his culture. He can't even eat a delicious cake - which Gemma enjoyed, despite Dave complaining again it's a little spicy. "A white chief stealing in black cuisine", that's how Calvin explains his sentiment to Tina. Then Gemma has a point: even if she's not italian, she can cook spaghetti. What's the difference? Does our culture define us as people?

On the other hand, Dave agrees with his neighbor. So Calvin being Calvin: he tries to sabotage the restaurant. "The food is good enough, and you don't care about the food stolen", yells Calvin, before meeting a young man who works here. Yes, the chief is white, he'd prefer working for a black guy, but his boss is cool, he teaches a lot about business. So why complain?

Meanwhile, Grover has Malcolm and Marty as guests on his school podcast project, and asks some very personal questions: from job to girlfriends, the two brothers are a little embarrassed - but the whole gag is absolutely fun. Little Grover is hilarious, but Marty and Malcolm take this too seriously: one feels he's lost confidence, the other one feels his life is a failure. I'd say their a bit depressed!

As always, The Nighborhood delivers a quite entertainment half hour and I'm glad we get to see more of them this year.
