22:10 - Dark - 90% of Viewers Aren't from Germany; 2nd Most Watched Series in a Foreign Language for Netflix

Turns out time travel through Germany’s recent history can be a hit with audiences around the world: Over 90 percent of the viewing of Netflix’s mystery drama “Dark” came from outside of Germany, revealed the company’s Chief Product Officer Greg Peters during a press event at Netflix’s Los Angeles offices Tuesday.

“Dark” premiered on Netflix in December, and was renewed for a second season that very month. Peters reiterated Tuesday that it had become one of the most-watched shows filmed in a language other than English on the service.

Peters also shared some stats on Netflix’s global audience, saying that the service’s 117 million subscribers have now created over 300 million profiles. “Essentially, we create 300 million different versions of Netflix,” he said. Additionally, Netflix’s members accessed the service from over 450 million individual devices last month, according to Peters.

22:10 - Netflix - Nielsen + Screen Australia Release Research Report

The 2017 Online & On Demand report, based on research conducted by Nielsen on behalf of Screen Australia, has been released today. The report finds streaming services have completely changed how Australians view content, yet broadcast TV remains popular and piracy levels have declined drastically.

“The global screen industry is in a rapid period of change, driven by technology. Consumer hunger for content is immense, and the report makes it plain that if creators allow device-neutral access to their content at a reasonable price, people will get their wallets out,” said Fiona Cameron, COO of Screen Australia.

“Free-to-air television remains king, but AVOD services like YouTube are nearly as widely used and SVOD platforms such as Netflix have seen incredible audience growth. The report also confirms that younger Australians are frequent users of new content platforms, including social media outlets like Facebook to access video.”

“The speed of change in our industry is not going to slow down, so undoubtedly there is pressure on producers to stay abreast of where their audience is, and for regulators to form policy that meets the market.”

“For Screen Australia, the findings show that Australian content is still immensely popular, and when you have platforms like broadcaster catch-up services housing a lot of local content, they’re rewarded with viewership.”

06:10 - Netflix Eyeing 700 Original TV Series & Movies in 2018

Netflix, set to spend upwards of $8 billion on content in 2018, will have in the neighborhood of 700 original TV shows and movies on the service this year, according to CFO David Wells.

The huge bucket of content is driving up Netflix’s subscriber base, said Wells, speaking Tuesday at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. The “700-range” figure he cited includes 80 original productions from outside the U.S., such as psychological thriller “Dark” from Germany.

The company’s strategy continues to be, “Let’s continue to add content — it’s working, it’s driving growth,” Wells said.

He also said there’s “no religion” at Netflix about the source of programming, although the company increasingly intends to produce its own content. “People don’t care where the stories come from,” he said. “We’re about having the best content. We don’t necessarily have to do it ourselves.”

Netflix ended 2017 with 117.6 million streaming members worldwide. “There’s more non-members than members of Netflix – that’s our opportunity,” Wells said, citing an estimated 700 million broadband users globally (excluding China).
