Kenya Barris/Julie Bean ABC Comedy Pilot Pushed Off-Cycle

ABC’s multi-camera comedy pilot from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Julie Bean (Grown-ish) has been pushed off-cycle. I hear the decision was made for casting reasons.

The producers quickly switched gears, and a couple of offers were made to actors of Baldwin’s caliber for the lead role. I hear after they didn’t pan out, a decision was made to push the pilot to the off-season to have more time to pursue big-name actors.

Barris will now focus his attention to the Bright Futures comedy pilot, which just landed a late pilot order at NBC.

Original February 7th: Alec Baldwin Exits Kenya Barris ABC Comedy, Project Reverting to Pilot

Alec Baldwin out.

The actor, who was attached to star in a straight-to-series show from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, has exited the untitled multicamera comedy. Technically speaking, Baldwin was never formally attached to star in the straight-to-series comedy. Baldwin, who will remain an exec producer on the comedy, exited after reading the script when he and producers Barris and Julie Bean (Grown-ish) realized the part wasn't right for him. Baldwin also is said to have wanted to film the show in New York — which would have posed a problem for Barris, who shoots Black-ish and spinoff Grown-ish in Los Angeles.

The comedy is now reverting to a pilot as a casting search for a new lead begins.
