The Originals - High Water and a Devil's Daughter - Review

This week on the Originals, Freya and Josh team up to take down Dominique. Things get a bit out of hand as Dominique kills Freya but Keelin manages to revive her. They share a kiss not long after. Hope visits Marcel, who protects her when the compound is under attack. Elijah wants Vincent to restore the link to the ancestors (you know, the one they did their best to get rid of last season) and sacrifices four innocent girls to do so. Davina manages to help Vincent on her end and the ritual works. Sofya gets possessed by the Hollow.

Favorite character: I was very impressed with Summer this week. She’s really doing a great job as Hope. Hope isn’t easily fazed. While most kids would avoid the creepy basement at all costs, she goes exploring. She doesn’t blindly go along with everything but actually asked Marcel what it was that her father had done to him. When they were under attack her first instinct was to fight. And she’s only seven. If this show is given the chance to proceed past this season, I can’t wait to see the woman that she grows up to be. This is one of the main reasons I’m not a fan of the theory that Hope will go to school in Mystic Falls. I don’t want her off the show, not when there’s so much still to learn.

Most surprising: I fully expected Marcel to share some of Klaus’ past with Hope. I’m so glad that he didn’t. Deep down, I think he realizes that Klaus has changed for her. And he wants Hope to have a chance to grow up with the dad he never had. Both Marcel and Klaus want to spare her from the horrors that they face every day, even though they know it’s only a matter of time. I think that right now, that is Klaus’ biggest fear. For Hope to lose that innocence and know all of the terrible things he’s done.

The elephant in the room: I’m calling this part the elephant in the room because I’ve actually started to dread discussing this part of the episode. The scenes are not the problem, the discussion that follows is. For the past few weeks there the same discussion has been recurring in the comments section. Is the bond between Freya and Keelin Stockholm syndrome, some say yes or others say no. Since we’re clearly not going to come to an agreement can we just agree to disagree? I’m not a psychologist so I can’t comment on this. What I can comment on is the fact that Freya has apologized, which Keelin accepted and they have moved past it. Just like Elena moved past Damon snapping Jeremy’s neck. Or Caroline moved past Klaus making Tyler bite her. Or Cami moved past Klaus compelling her for months. I can keep going but I think you get my point. As for what actually happened this week, Freya did a very Klaus-like thing. She got scared so she pushed Keelin away. Freya doesn’t get vulnerable a lot, even with her family. She always tries to act though. Her main focus these past few years has been protecting her family. She hasn’t really done anything for herself aside from the occasional night out in early season 3. I think she deserves to find some happiness of her own.

Oh, boy: Remember how I talked about Elijah going down a dark path? Boy did he cross a line this week. I think I was as shocked as Vincent was to see what he had done. To just kill four innocent girls, without knowing for sure if the resurrection would work or not. It’s not something I was expecting from Elijah just yet. But apparently, he’s already further down that path than I thought. It worries me that no one in his family knows what happened this week. Because it would clearly be a red flag that something is wrong.
What pissed me off: I make it a rule these days to stay away from spoilers (yes, I’m fully aware of the irony). There have been too many moments when a promo or sneak peek revealed a bit too much. I do still read the occasional synopsis and check out the promotional photos. So you’d think whoever is responsible for the photos that are released ahead of the episode airing, would be smart enough not to release anything that could potentially spoil a major storyline for that episode. Doesn’t seem to be the case with this one. Freya’s temporary death would have left a much bigger impression on me had I not already seen the photo of her and Keelin kissing at the end of the episode. Way to ruin the suspense.

Predictions: There seemed to be some discussion online about Tyler’s involvement with the bone the Hollow is seeking. Some people were saying that the writers were trying to re-write his death but I don’t think his death is supposed to have anything to do with that bone. I think they just used Tyler so that they could insert Mystic Falls into the storyline. Tyler probably never even knew the bone existed. I’m betting Carol had that thing stored in an attic somewhere. I don’t expect Tyler to be mentioned much beyond that. Who does seem to be making a return, is Davina. I’m starting to wonder if this will just be a guest spot or if it’ll grow into a more permanent thing. I had kind of a love-hate relationship with the character. She had some great moments and some lesser ones. However, I do look forward to seeing her again. Something else I noticed at the end of the episode is the matching birthmarks at on Hayley and Hope. Of course, it makes sense that Hope would have one too but I think the fact that they zoomed in on it means something.

Best quotes: Josh: “I’m just super overwhelmed by the sheer number of jokes I could make about being in this body. It is an embarrassment of really inappropriate riches.”
Hope: “I’m seven, not stupid.” Marcel: “You know, you’re also pretty courageous. Coming down here to talk to a stranger.” Hope: “I’m not scared. I’m a Mikaelson witch.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
