Empire - Toil and Trouble, Part 2 - Review: "An Explosive Finale"

Empire's third season is over. It was an odd and unordinary season, but at least the ending didn't disappoint me at all. Let's understand what happened.

Toil and Trouble, Part 2 gives the proper amount of space and screen time to all the characters. I really enjoyed how it was developed and there were many unexpected twists. First of all, Bella is still missing and Hakeem just wants to get her back. As we already know the Dubois are guilty of the kidnap, but I didn't expect Anika's to be aware of this situation. Hakeem follows her and decides to get a deal with them: they will give Bella back, but he has to do whatever they ask. Finally, Hakeem will go through a dangerous and gripping path.

There was a huge change in the Lucious and Cookie's storyline: in the end they got back together. Lucious discovered that Giuliana was stealing millions to their company and he realized that Cookie is the only love of his life. He decides that he wants to travel all over the world with and gives Andre the entire control of the company. It was such an unexpected positive ending, but we know how Empire works: each good twist must be followed by a tragic event. Andre has set in motion his plan to kill his father, but after their reconciliation, he wants to stop everything. He can not stop the bomb and tries to save both his parents. And then the explosion arrives. Cookie is safe, but Lucious gets hurt. As in the best soap-opera, he survives but he can not remember anything. I enjoyed these narrative developments: it all feels coherent, but the show is soap-opera. Even the writers decided to fully embrace this element. I loved the Demi Moore's role and I can't wait to have her weekly on my TV. I am more than happy that finally we got rid of Giuliana: I hated her character so much that I felt finally free of such a burden.

Even Anika had much to do: she is now arrested for Tariq's murder. Lucious' mother smartly made her touch the paper knife with which she killed his son's brother. What will happen to Anika? She can't catch a break.

All in all, this third season was the weakest. It's clear tat the writers have so many ideas and stories and they can not deal with this huge amount of twists and changes. The finale ended the season on a high note: I loved how they changed everything once again.

And you? What do you think of Toil and Trouble, Part 2?
