Supergirl - Medusa - Review:Thanksgiving and Family

Supergirl 208

Directed by Stefan Pleszczynski

Written by Jessica Queller & Derek Simon

It's crossover week on The CW and it all starts with Supergirl. However, the part that sets it up isn’t until near the end of the episode. Firstly, Supergirl must contend with a Danvers Thanksgiving, a virus against Aliens and learn a shocking truth about one of her own parents. She isn’t the only one given some hard truths and we learn if Lena really is a Luthor at heart.

As its thanksgiving, Eliza is in town to see her daughters, Winn and James are there wanting to tell Kara about their guardian activities but Alex has something she wants to say as well. Mon-El arrives but alas he hasn’t grasped what stuffing is yet much to our amusement. Kara tries to keep Alex off the alcohol, yes, we all remember the last thanksgiving but even hiding it in the freezer doesn’t stop Alex sneaking it when Kara is talking with the boys. Of course, Mon- El being nice to her mother unnerves Kara but Eliza can see his interest lies in Kara.
When it comes to the toasts poor Alex gets interrupted by the boys and when she gets her chance a portal opens above them but closes. Not your normal thanksgiving….

At the DEO, poor Alex is rubbing her temples, Kara believes she can find out what Cadmus wanted with her blood by being a sneaky reporter, yes, we are as convinced as Winn and Alex about her abilities.
Lena sees right through her when Kara asks about her Mother (who runs Cadmus) saying she is doing a piece about mothers and daughters for the Magazine. We do learn there seems to be no lost between the two of them.

Mon- El is doing his usual drinking at the Alien Bar (I really wish they would name the place) when he believes he sees J’onn but it’s the real Hank Henshaw, Cyborg Superman who plants something that releases a toxin into the bar.
Mon- El and Cyborg Superman fight outside, Mon- el loses and hears screams and people running out the bar. As he runs back in we see all the Aliens are dead.

Mon- El is put in quarantine and J’onn orders Kara to stay at the DEO along with himself until they know what they are dealing with.

Lena has a thanksgiving tradition of her own working at her desk when her mother arrives, like I said there clearly is no love lost between them and she tells her quite clearly, she favored Lex. She knows her Mother is up to something but she doesn’t tell her anything.

Kara keeps Mon- El entertained with a game of Monopoly and asks him if he likes her, I believe he is playing coy about understanding the language to divert from the truth when he starts coughing. It seems he was infected after all.

Eliza Danvers identifies it as a Kryptonian virus. Kara now knows why CADMUS needed her blood and heads to the fortress of solitude.
At the Fortress, she learns they accessed the Medusa virus. An image of her father appears telling her he created the virus to protect Kryptonians from invasion (oh, I got an idea here at the end of the crossover I wonder if I am right!)
Seems CADMUS has the formula now and can make as much as they want. The virus does not attack Kryptonians that is why Mon- El is still alive as Daxamites and Kryptonian’s share similar DNA he is fighting it but doesn’t have much time.

Alex and her Mother are working together and as Mother’s always know when something is bothering their children she senses Alex wants to tell her something she even guesses the reason is Maggie and Alex is gay. Eliza is accepting of her daughter and it’s a beautiful scene that shows how parents should be when their child tells them such news. It’s a hard journey and knowing those you love are with you makes it easier. Once again Chyler didn’t leave many without a tear in their eyes at her portrayal of Alex’s coming out.

Kara is upset as she believed her Father worked for good and talks with J’onn. She is shocked when she sees J’onn transform and makes her promise not tell the others as they have enough to worry about. Eliza realizes they need an agent to release the virus into the atmosphere which is located at L Corp.

Supergirl heads off but seems Cyborg Hank is already there, they fight and she saves Lena from getting taken out with her own L Corp sign. Cyborg seems to get the upper hand (can we have her being a bit more super please! I feel she is getting her butt kicked too often) but once again a portal opens and distracts him, the police arrive and Maggie gets injured. Supergirl rushes to her aid but Cyborg escapes luckily without the agent he needed.

Supergirl is convinced Lena is innocent but the others aren’t so sure so she goes to talk to her revealing to her Lillian Luthor is behind CADMUS. She tells her she imprisoned her but Lena doesn’t believe her or refuses to, saying Supergirl is all high and mighty like her cousin and judging the Luthor’s. Supergirl tells her she knows how it feels to be let down by a parent and she isn’t like her Mother. Lena asks her to leave.

Maggie Sawyer obviously got taken to the DEO for treatment, not a hospital and Dr Alex Danvers is of course on hand to patch her up. She thanks Maggie for helping her realize it wasn’t just about her but she needed to accept who she was. I can see Maggie looks a bit disappointed. The chemistry between these two is hotter than Supergirls heat vision!

Kara is sat with Mon- El for all their squabbling she clearly likes him and when they talk and share a kiss before he goes back to sleep you can see she is confused.

A few weeks ago, I asked is there such as thing as a good Luthor? Well, Lena is certainly testing that theory when she gives her mother the Agent she wanted to steal. Mother and daughter working together surely not?

Winn, who has been tracking it sees it is on the move and J’onn wants to go with Kara, the virus won’t hurt her but it will kill J’onn he is ready to die as he doesn’t want to change into a white Martian.

A Mother’s gift to her daughter, the key to a rocket launcher and as Supergirl and J’onn land you can she is feel devastated as Lena launches the missile containing the virus.

Supergirl flies after it but J’onn is battle Cyborg Hank who only seems to get rattled when J’onn turns into a mutated version of a green white Martian.
As Supergirl approaches the missile Lilian detonates it knocking out Supergirl who only recovers just in time. J’onn gets detracted seeing her fall and tries to get to her but Cyborg Hank gets the better of him until Supergirl lands on him, I agree he is no Superman, that’s why I call him Cyborg Hank. As the virus rains down J’onn accepts his fate. Lena, however, has double-crossed her mother and the police sirens can be heard. The virus has been neutralized… Cadmus loses. I had faith in Lena and I think a scene was needed were Supergirl thanks her.

The scene with the spaceship made me wonder if it was connected to the crossover but it seems they are looking for Mon- El of Daxam.

Mon- El, thanks to Eliza is on the mend and J’onn is back to himself as well seems the coding on the virus had its uses and helped attack the White Martian cells. Mon- el and Kara talk but he plays dumb like he has no memory of the kiss and Kara doesn’t tell him. I can see these two dancing around each other for the season.

Alex is in her apartment, yes once again we get to see her place and no surprise she is drinking after a tough day. I like how she answers they door with her gun drawn, ever the agent but its only Maggie with Pizza.
Seems getting zapped by a super robot made her think about her feelings for Alex and she just wants to kiss the girl. Yes, she likes Alex and finally Alex does get her girl.

As you know this episode is the start of the four-way crossover event and the portals are something to do with that. When two men, Barry Allen Aka the Flash and Cisco, who can vibe between worlds appear we know things are about to start. Kara arrives home and Barry says he needs her help.

While I had a few gripes about some plot twists but all around it was a solid episode and a great start to the week. I get the feeling like has been said all along Mon- El has lied and this will cause a breach between him and Kara or maybe it’s why he won’t pursue the romance. Maggie and Alex’s romance and how it has progressed has been handled so well and it is wonderful they got to kiss at the start of the big week on CW.

So, what were your thoughts on this episode and the romances?

I don't think we have seen the last of CADMUS do you ?

Be sure to post in the comments below.

Look out for our big round table review of the 4-way crossover that concludes tonight on The CW.
