The Goldbergs - Recipe for Death II: Kiss the Cook - Review

Welcome back to another wonderful episode of The Goldbergs! This week we got to see Adam film his first movie with the help of Murray, and Beverly and Erica bonded (and argued, of course) over sweaters. I always like it when Murray is involved so I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

Anyone that has ever seen an episode of The Goldbergs knows that Adam loves movies and now he finally has a chance to make his own. It turns out that Murray shares Adam's love of action movies, and Adam decides to take advantage of their shared interest. I love that Adam went to Murray to present his idea about filming a movie. "I'm going to do that thing where I present you with an awesome idea and ask you to fund it." And I loved that Murray said yes right away, but Pops and Adam ignored him because they couldn't believe he was actually going along with Adam's idea.

The film is titled "Recipe for Death", and Adam and Murray are both excited about this project- at first. Barry also wants in and thinks he would be great because of his extensive knowledge of Chuck Norris. He shows off his not so awesome karate skills, and while Murray is absolutely against this, Adam gives him the part because he has no other options. I thought the exchange between Adam and Murray was hilarious.

"Are you serious about this? This guy's a moron." - Murray
"He's your son." - Adam
"That's how I know." - Murray

Murray ends up sabotaging Barry so that he can't be in the movie and gets Coach to be the star. He also rewrites the script to include snappy one liners which Adam isn't okay with. Adam is irritated with his dad having too much power and asks Pops to be the producer instead. Murray's feelings are hurt and they fight, but their fight isn't really a fight. Murray just yells really loud that he's going to support Adam no matter what.

Adam and Murray make up by end of the episode. Murray really likes "Recipe for Death" and Adam tells him that he's a good producer. Murray responds by telling his son that he's always rooting for him. This was special because Murray isn't known for expressing his feelings, but he did in this episode while staying in character. I think the writers did a great job by keeping Murray's typical snark. I hope we get more Adam/Murray episodes in the future.

Erica and Beverly also had some bonding moments this week, but their path to happiness wasn't easy, either. Erica is focused on getting a sweater dress because Lainey has one. She asks Beverly to go shopping with her, and while Beverly thinks this is going to be an amazing mother/daughter bonding day, Erica just wants the dress. The day ends up being a disaster as Beverly hates all the clothes Erica tries on, and she's upset that Gimbels is closing. She also freaks out because Benetton doesn't have tuna. She tries to present a coupon, but the sales lady says that Benetton doesn't accept Gimbels coupons. Benetton is cool and hip and fresh and fun, at least according to the sales associate. Beverly causes a scene and is asked to leave the store.

Erica is upset that she didn't get her sweater dress so she shops her mom's closet trying to find the perfect combinations for a dress. She fails. Miserably. She tries twice, and both times she looks terrible. And she's made a huge mess and messed up her mom's closet. I couldn't help but laugh at
her conversation with Lainey.

"This did not work!" - Erica
"No it did not!" - Lainey
"This does not look like Benneton's!" - Erica
"No it does not!" - Lainey

Erica hurts Beverly by telling her the point of their earlier shopping spree was finding the perfect dress; it wasn't about her. Erica realizes that she messed up and apologizes to her mom. The two of them go on a real shopping spree at Gimbels going out of business sale. The two did some major damage and bought half the store. But the most important thing was that they made some memories and had fun. It also looked like Beverly got her tuna at the Gimbels cafeteria.

This episode of The Goldbergs was one of the best of the season in my opinion. The kids all learned some valuable lessons and Murray and Beverly ended up happy. I hope there are more episodes like this in the future.

Next week is the Thanksgiving episode of The Goldbergs and hopefully you all know by know that I love holiday episodes. I can't wait!

What did you all think about "Recipe for Death"? Do you all like when Beverly and Murray have bonding moments with the kids? Do you want to see more Murray and Adam scenes? Let me know in the comments section!
