“Shogun” — (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)

SECRETS AND NEW FOUND POWERS — Nate (Nick Zano) is shocked to learn that he has powers but then accidentally lands himself and Ray (Brandon Routh) in Feudal Japan. After Sara (Caity Lotz) convinces their stowaway Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), AKA Vixen, that Rory (Dominic Purcell) is not a murderer, they all agree to find Nate and help him master his powers in order to defend the Japanese village from the Shogun and his army of samurai warriors. Meanwhile, Jax (Franz Drameh) and Stein (Victor Garber) stay back to help fix the ship and find a secret compartment but decide not to tell the rest of the team what they learn. Kevin Tancharoen directed the episode written by Phil Klemmer & Grainne Godfree (#203). Original airdate 10/27/2016.

But Eobard’s plan somewhat backfired. The Reverse-Flash had given the Nazis a serum that would imbue superpowers to one individual. After being captured, Ray (Brandon Routh) was forced to replicate the serum, but instead tinkered with it to make it better, ultimately using it to save the life of hemophiliac Nate Heywood (Nick Zano). Hence, with the death of one superhero came the birth of another.

“One of the reasons why we wanted to bring the character of Nate into the show was we wanted to play with something that The Flash got a chance to really play with in season 1, which is the fun of telling an origin story for a hero,” Guggenheim says of Heywood, who becomes Citizen Steel in the comics. “In the evolution of a hero, there are all these fun, seminal moments that we want to put our own Legends spin on — part of that is discovering you have powers; part of it is learning how to control those powers; part of it is the first time you go out in costume, the first time you fail, the first time you realize you have a weakness. You can safely assume that the reason we brought in Nate was so we could tell those kinds of stories, including the unpredictable nature of his powers. The next episode, 203, really shows how difficult it is for Nate to get his powers under control.”

As executive producer Marc Guggenheim points out, “If you’re Vixen, and you’ve got Rex Tyler dying in your arms, and you hear the words ‘time traveler,’ who would you think is responsible?”

While Vixen keeps tabs on the Legends, the show will find other ways to incorporate the JSA, even as it leaves behind their 1942 stomping grounds. For starters, “we do go back to 1987, [where] we’ll meet a much older version of Obsidian, who’s going to be played by [Millennium star] Lance Henriksen,” Guggenheim previews. “Then we have another device up our sleeves that I don’t want to spoil because it deals with stuff that is mythology-based in the back half of the year.”
