The 100 - Fallen - Review: "Pain and suffering"

We can all agree that season 3 of The 100 is not its best, but "Fallen" was definitely a step in the right direction. The episode juggled multiple storylines and actually managed to develop them all at once. For the first time since the season 3 premiere, all current series regulars appeared in the episode (RIP Lincoln). Let's look at the major developments of "Fallen".

Arkadia and the resistance
The episode opens with Octavia beating Bellamy and saying he's dead to her. We have seen that scene in the season 3 promo, but we saw only a brief part of it and we didn't have the right context. I loved that Bellamy just let Octavia beat him, he knows he deserves that. In Arkadia, Hannah tells her son that he has to go, because Pike knows that Monty helped the others escape. This actually made me care a little bit about Hannah, however, that was thrown away when it was revealed that she betrayed Monty. Monty contacts the other members of the resistance and heads to the dropship. Pike followed him though, and Kane and Octavia walk right into a trap when they are surrounded by Arkadia guards. Pike wants proof from Bellamy that he is still with him and Bellamy takes him to the cave where the others are hiding. However, Bellamy instead takes them to the Grounder blockade and they hand over Pike to the Grounders.

It is so very satisfying to see Pike finally getting his due. Not only did Bellamy betray him, but they also shot an arrow through his shoulder and gave him a few beatings. Of course, he is not dead yet and anything can happen between the walk from the blockade to Polis. Octavia reached for the knife to finish Pike, but Kane wisely stopped her. We are not done yet with Pike, but things are going well so far. You will get your revenge, Octavia! I loved how she said "Blood must have blood" at the end. I also liked how they are not just letting go of what Bellamy did. Kane was also concerned for his motivations and questioned whether he turned against Pike for his sister or because it was the right thing to do. That is something he will have to think about for himself. Personally, I believe it's a mix of both.

ALIE and the City of Light
Raven fought so hard to get ALIE out of her mind. She was ready to have Abby perform a risky surgery on her in order to get ALIE out. However, ALIE and Jaha were not letting that happen. ALIE brought back Raven's pain, which led to a series of flashbacks from all three seasons. That sequence was awesome, and it led to some amazing acting by Lindsey Morgan. In the end, Raven succumbed to ALIE and ALIE had full access to her synaptic memory. Abby brought Raven to medical, but that only led to Abby being captured with Jackson's help. In order to save Raven, Abby also took the key to the City of Light. The only one not infected by ALIE's mind games, is Jasper. He gets Raven out of medical, takes a car to get out of Arkadia and races through the walls of the camp. Suddenly, Clarke shows up in front of him and he urges her to get in the car. As Abby, Jaha, ALIE and the rest of the followers watch, Jasper races off. Abby says that Arkadia has fallen and now they can move on to Stage 2.

I had really, really hoped that Abby somehow managed to fool Jaha when she took the pill. I don't know, maybe she couldn't swallow it, but keep it in her mouth instead? It's frustrating to see her unwillingly join ALIE's cause, and it's sure to create conflict with her daughter. However, Abby really has shown that she cares for Raven so it's logical that she would do anything to save her. I also love that Jasper finally had something to do for the first time this season. He has been drunk, he's been mad and he was prepared to let ALIE take away his pain. Fortunately, Jasper finally saw what it did to a person and now he's trying to save Raven. I did not expect to see Clarke pop up out of nowhere and that was an unexpected reunion between Jasper and Clarke, who haven't shared a scene since the season 2 finale. Now Clarke will finally see the real threat inside Arkadia. It really looked like a cult when ALIE's followers all stood up and listened to her. Creepy!

Polis
Murphy sided with Ontari in this episode, suggesting he be her fake flamekeeper. Ontari had a big problem, which is she had to recall all the names of the previous commanders. The flame has that information, but since Ontari doesn't have the flame, she can't recall the names. Well, except for the first Commander. Instead, she gouges out the eyes of one of the ambassadors to show that she is Heda. Later, she undressed in front of Murphy and invited him to have sex with her. While Murphy was unwilling to do so at first and said he was already with someone, he later changed his mind.

I love that they are giving some layers to Ontari. She said that she also suffered under the cruelty of Ice Queen Nia and that was ripped from her family. We also saw that she is quite insecure about her position and that she is rehearsing her lines to say to the ambassador. I do think that scene where she gouged out that ambassador's eyes was a little too gross. And then there was the ambiguous sex scene and I have seen some say that this is rape. To be honest, I really hadn't thought of that possibility before I read the reactions to the episode. I also don't really see it as rape since Murphy in the end gave in. He might have done so unwillingly, so I see why people would call it rape. However, Ontari seduced him and even though Murphy didn't want to betray Emori, he does what he needs to do to survive.

What did you think of "Fallen"? How happy are you that Pike is finally in the hands of the Grounders? What do you think Abby means by Stage 2? Will Jasper and Clarke succeed in bringing Raven back? Do you think Ontari's scam will hold up? And lastly, how did you view that scene between Murphy and Ontari? I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.

Here's a promo for the next episode:
