The Originals - A Streetcar Named Desire - Review

This week’s episode of ‘The Originals’ was a crossover with ‘The Vampire Diaires’. Stefan came to New Orleans to seek refuge because he’s being chased by a vampire huntress. While in New Orleans he helps Hayley, Marcel and Freya rescue Klaus and Elijah who have been kidnapped by the Strix who want to usire them. They manage to save Elijah but are too late for Klaus. Davina, being the only witch still standing finishes the spell. She later uses the energy to resurrect Kol. When Elijah is unable to kill Aya, Hayley kills her instead. Klaus gets his revenge on Aurora when he locks her away for the rest of eternity behind a brick wall.

Favorite demise: Choosing between Aya’s and Aurora’s is like Sophie’s choice, so I’ll discuss them both. Let’s start with Aya. I felt really bad for Elijah in this scene. I’m glad Hayley stepped in to kill her because it would’ve destroyed something in Elijah if he had to do it. Though I wish the honor could’ve gone to Rebekah, I’m glad to see Aya gone. With the unsiring storyline moving faster than I had expected, I think her storyline would’ve dragged on a bit too long had she made it to the end of the season. As for Aurora, karma really is a bitch. While locking her away forever (in the dark) is a pretty cruel fate, it’s not undeserved. If I’m not mistaken, Klaus did the same thing to Esther for a short while before Freya killed her. I does leave the door open for her to return at some point, though I doubt it’ll happen anytime soon. If you thought she was angry now, imagine how she’ll be then.

Favorite storyline: Whenever the writers initiate something (ritual to break a curse, aunt rising from the dead, cure for vampirism, …) they almost always follow through on it. Which is why I was not surprised to see that Klaus’ unsiring was successful. I’m also not surprised that it was Klaus and not Elijah. This way, if they ever want to end to show by killing of Klaus, they can do so without killing the entire cast of ‘The Vampire Diaries’. I doubt the Strix will be sticking around now (those that Rayna didn’t kill) and I’m glad too because there’s only so much you can do without it becoming repetitive.

Favorite twist: I must say, I found it very ingenious that they used Rayna to distract the Strix. I did not see that coming. The entire car ride I was wonder what on earth Hayley and Stefan were going to do to get past them. The Strix clearly have a history with Reyna as well, as do the Originals. I’m disappointed we didn’t get to see any of that. Though I guess I’m not sure where they would’ve squeezed the flashbacks in. I actually liked the addition of Stefan on the show and I think he’d fit in well. Any chance he’d move to New Orleans if ‘Vampire Diaries’ got cancelled?

Biggest risk: Davina took a huge risk this week. I get why she still went through with the spell. She’s wanted to find a way to keep Marcel and Josh safe for a while and this was the best way to do it. However, had her spell with Kol not worked, there would be very little to stop Klaus or even Elijah from killing her. Luckily she did manage to resurrect him (YAY!) and there’s no way he’ll let his siblings touch her so I guess she’s safe for now. Speaking of Kol, am I the only one who did a happy dance when he was resurrected? I was a bit spoiled when I saw a screengrab of him in the promo for next week before I watched the episode, but still. Does this mean he now falls under that prophecy or did it just apply to Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah?
Most useless character: As much as I like Lucien, I don’t really see the point of him. He’s no longer a threat since Cami took back her dark objects and he adds very little value to the episodes. I hope the writers give him something to do soon because this is very disappointing. He started out as such a great character, it’s a shame to see him reduced to this.

Most surprising chemistry: Not only am I surprised by how often both Stefan and Freya shared the screen, but I actually liked the two of them together. I know very well that this is one of those pairings that will never happen but that doesn’t mean I can’t like it. Was I the only one who saw something between them?

Most confusing part: So it appears that Elijah has shared what happened to Rebekah with his siblings. What I don’t get is why he shared this bit of information now and why it wasn’t shown on screen but merely mentioned like it wasn’t all that important. Part of me wonders if it wasn’t to inform the ‘Vampire Diaries’ fans (who don’t regularly watch the show) why Rebekah isn’t around.

Crossover information: So what we saw on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ didn’t give us as much information about the future as I had expected. Apparently the Original siblings are no longer in New Orleans three years from now. In fact, they vanished three years before meaning something big is going down soon. I’m sure I’m not the only one who now has very high expectations for the finale. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did a large time jump between season 3 and 4, perhaps picking up years later when they return to New Orleans.
How I felt about the crossover: Last week I mentioned that I wasn’t very excited about it because it would make writing this review a lot harder. Luckily they didn’t go into the double timelines as much as I had expected them to. They also didn’t include too much in the first hour of the crossover that was relevant for this show’s storylines. I actually really enjoyed this episode and think it’s one of the best episodes of the season. As I mentioned before, I loved how Stefan fit into the storylines. I think it actually made a bit more sense that Klaus’ involvement in the first half of the crossover. The small talk with Hayley was actually refreshing. We don’t really have moments like these on the show anymore. Everyone knows everyone now so there’s never really time for chit chat. I liked that moment when Hayley talked about Hope, it’s a shame she didn’t get to make a cameo. (who the hell is watching her anyway?) I’m also pretty sure Stefan thinks Klaus and Hayley are a couple, at least it sounded like he did from the advice he gave Klaus at the end of the episode. Which isn’t all that surprising if you ask me because those two act like a married couple.

Best quotes: Stefan: “So uhm, just full disclosure. I dated your sister once.”
Klaus: “You once told me you wanted to use her head as a footstool. Why wait?”
Freya: “I’d channel Finn but he’s all for letting our brothers perish, so I’ll channel Lucien. The older the vampire, the better the battery.”
Elijah: “Tell me something Aurora. Have you met your brother Tristan?”
Kol: “I never doubted you for a second, Davina Claire.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
