Shadowhunters - Major Arcana - Review

This week in Shadowhunters, the main focus was on two storylines. The first is Clary, the Lightwood siblings (Jace included) and Luke who are trying to find the Mortal Cup. After a lot of sneaking in and out of the precinct and evading demons they manage to get it. The second storyline is Simon who reaches the end of his downward spiral when he goes to Hotel Dumort and finds Camille, who then attacks him.

Favorite storyline: Last week I complained that Simon’s vampire storyline was moving too slowly. Well we sure reached the tipping point this week. His downward spiral took on a whole new level in this episode. His mother, sister and Maureen all took notice. Clary still has no clue because she’s so focused on saving her mother. I expect that she’ll feel pretty guilty about this next week. So Simon finally gave in and went to Hotel Dumort. It’s not the first time we’ve seen him there since his kidnapping but it’s the first time he entered. The side effects of having vampire blood in his system would’ve passed eventually, unfortunately Simon never made it to that point. The sad part is that if Clary had paid him a little more attention, she might have mentioned it to Jace, Izzy or Alec who would know this. I’m still a bit surprised that neither Jace nor Alec figured out what was going on but considering their views on mundanes, I guess it kind of makes sense. They don’t really pay him all that much attention. The only who definitely would’ve known is Izzy which is probably why the writers have kept her away from Simon these past few weeks. We’ll be seeing a whole new side of Simon.

Biggest surprise: I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but I sort of enjoyed the dynamic between Clary and Jace this week. They make a pretty good team and I enjoyed the banter. Their act in the precinct was hilarious and reminded me a lot of why I loved them in the books. The only part I didn’t really enjoy was when they got all mushy in the Institute. Even the Lightwood siblings didn’t seem to care much for it. I do hope they keep up this dynamic. It was a great improvement over the past few weeks.

Most confusing change: So a lot in this episode was different from the books. But while the storyline being set at the precinct actually made sense, it’s the Mortal Cup’s magic abilities that confused me. From what I remember the cup doesn’t have offensive capabilities. Yes, the cup does have some protective and controlling abilities of demons but I don’t think it should work the way it did on the show. Its main purpose is to turn mundanes into Shadowhunters. Someone asked last week why Valentine wanting to use the cup to make more Shadowhunters would be such a bad thing. The concept isn’t, however the Mortal cup isn’t always effective. It works best on kids, but in the case of adults it could kill them. Something Valentine doesn’t really care about. This is why the Clave only uses it when the Shadowhunter ranks are depleted or in rare cases when a mundane who is aware of the Shadow world wants to become a Shadowhunter.

Honorable mention: Any other book fans who started singing Will’s demon pox song when Jace mentioned it? Was that just me? For the non-book fans, allow me to share this gem with you all.

“Demon pox, oh, demon pox,
Just how is it acquired?
One must go down to the bad part of town
Until one is very tired.
Demon pox, oh, demon pox
I had it all along—
No, not the pox, you foolish blocks,
I mean this very song—
For I was right, and you were wrong!”

Favorite character(s): Usually I separate the Lightwood siblings but since neither got much screen time (and most of it was together) I figured I’d make an exception this week. Have I mentioned lately how much I love the relationship between these two. Alec immediately realized what was going on with Izzy, that she’s trying to take some of the heat off of Alec. Izzy immediately saw that there was something more going on between Alec and Magnus. But since she doesn’t push him to talk about it, she knows he will when he’s ready. They work well together in the field too, even though it seems like Izzy was the one who got the genes that contained the ability to flirt. I assume that their screen time won’t increase much next week, since the main focus will probably be on Simon, but I do hope that we get more scenes with the two of them together.
Best quotes: Magnus: “I’d be like Beyoncé riding on a dinosaur through Times Square. People would notice.”
Izzy: “Slept at Magnus’ place?” Alec: “Didn’t do much sleeping.”
Clary: “Don’t worry I’ve got a plan.” Jace: “A good plan this time?” Clary: “90%, just follow my lead. Oh and I apologize.” Jace: “Apologize for what?” Clary: “The other 10%.”
Clary: “You son of a bitch.” *Clary slaps Jace*
Alec: “This is a disaster.” Jace: “Hey, demon pox is a disaster. This is an inconvenience.”
Alec: “Oh crap.” Izzy: “Don’t worry it’s good practice. You know, for asking out Magnus.”
Clary: “What’s the unlock rune again?” *Jace kicks in the door* Jace: “Open Sesame.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
