Variety spoke to Dalton about Ward’s surprising transformation, which the actor admitted “was a very bittersweet thing” for him. “That version of Ward is no longer. I don’t know if we want to call him I-Ward, or Ward 2.0, but that version of Ward is no longer. And I was a little sad, but at the same time, I also knew that I was still on the show!”

While it was tough for him to say goodbye to the Ward we’ve come to know and love (or loved to hate), Dalton said he was glad that he got the “opportunity to play another character … even though he looks like me and talks like me and still has the memories, it’s a different entity, so it’s very exciting, actually. I’m very lucky to have a part on a show that is so successful and a part that changes so often and has such a cool story arc.”

Are we going to learn more about these ancient cities that were on this planet? Maybe get some flashbacks to see how It drove them to civil war?
Anything’s a possibility. But we did blow up the portal. There is a history there and perhaps we will unravel it. I guess I can just say “Maybe?!”

How much will Malick (Powers Boothe) play a role in the second half of the season?
We’d be fools not to use him more. We couldn’t be bigger fans of his portrayal of the role. We knew going in that we were going to get some bang for our buck, and we’ve been loving writing the character. We love the way he’s attacking the scenes. We plan on keeping him around, because we’d be idiots not to.

Since Lash killed all of Hydra’s Inhumans, will they be searching for new ones?
Inhumans are in the world. Hydra is a bad organization that wants to do bad things. I have a feeling they’re not going to give up that agenda, but they’ll have some new objectives as well.

By the end of the episode, Ward is dead by Coulson's hand, but the mysterious, dangerous Inhuman took over his body and made it through the portal. What does this mean for the character of Ward going forward? Are we going to see Brett Dalton play a completely new character?

I don't know how much I can say, but if whatever was there had been "Will" for the whole episode, and Will seemed to recognize Fitz and have memories and know things about Simmons, I think there are some clues in episode 10 to that. I'm not going to say how personal or how much. The beauty of having Brett Dalton and the body of Grant Ward around, A. it's easy on the eye, and B. there's personal relationships between him and everyone else on the show. Coulson believes he left that person dead on another planet as does Fitz. Should they happen to run into each other in the back half, I think it will be fairly explosive and interesting.

We hardly know anything about this mysterious Inhuman that took over Will's and then Ward's body. Now that the Inhuman has made it to Earth and linked up with Hydra, what can you tell me about what it wants or what its next move is?

We don't know much at this state except that it seems to be very, very old and that people from Hydra have been paying it attention and trying to bring it back for centuries. I think something with that kind of history potentially has a lot of power and baggage. And we haven't said it explicitly but Simmons had the feeling that that thing was responsible for decimating that other planet. We should be very, very afraid that that thing is back on this side. Beyond that, I'm not allowed to say anything else.

TVLINE | Do you think the memory that Phil had of Rosalind was the last nudge he needed to go ahead and kill Ward?
I do. I do. It’s such an interesting moment they wrote, because he couldn’t leave Ward on the planet. It really gets down to the heart of leadership. I think [Coulson] is going to spend some time trying to figure out whether it was an act of vengeance or an act of protecting others, or both. But I don’t think it’s going to sit well.

TVLINE | As far as Phil knows, Ward’s dead back on the planet, so I can’t even imagine the team’s reactions if they ever lay their eyes on this thing that he has become.
Yeah. It’s not something we’ve arrived at yet [in filming], but it seems to be a pretty astonishing moment that probably lies in our future.
