Z Nation - We Were Nowhere Near The Grand Canyon - Review

In 'We Were Nowhere Near the Grand Canyon' Team Bite Mark find themselves on the run from a fast approaching horde of zombies. Meanwhile, Citizen Z makes his return.

This was a largely forgettable, filler type of episode. It begins with a Warren dream sequence where she envisions herself making out with Vasquez before he turns while she is kissing him. It was a nice, quick peek at both her deepest desire and deepest fear. Though so far we haven't been given much to care about for the character of Vasquez. The team stop on the road when they see a horde of zombies in the distance blocking their way out west

Eventually the team splits up paving the way for another Doc and 10K adventure. The two of them stumble upon a Native American settlement and are accused of bringing white guy disease to the Native's sacred land. They are held captive by Gordon also known as Red Hawk, hell bent on avenging the injustices his people experienced at the hands of white people. His sister, Ayalla, though tells him to grow up and she releases Doc and 10K.

10K gets close into getting lucky with Ayalla after a tender moment, but nothing seemed to come out of it. This seems to be a constant theme for 10K, and it is quite amusing. C'mon 10K! You can do it.

Doc also hooks up and finds himself with a medicine woman. Doc gets high on some drug, which leads him to having another out of body experience - killing a zombie while trapped in a net. Even for Z Nation standards that was a little weird.

Elsewhere, the rest of the team ends up at Gordon and Ayalla's fathers casino where they get help to contact Citizen Z to figure out the coordinates for California. Speaking of which, Citizen Z returns. He is still killing off all the Z's who infiltrated his base. The last one he had to kill with a rocket launcher. His addition wasn't as disruptive to the narrative as usual, but it did not really add much either.

Overall, I actually found it a chore to sit through this episode. It lacked Z Nation's brand of humor and the plot just wasn't exciting. Though there were some highlight sequences. The team creating fire to divert the zombies away was visually stunning, especially the World War Z inspired image of the zombies falling off the cliff. The music during the scene, mixing that traditional Native American music with modern electronic, was quite invigorating.

As per every episode it seems, Murphy had another shining moment. It was very interesting to see him empathizing with the Z's and the complete heartbreak he expressed at watching them die. The moment between Warren and Murphy, where she reminds him of his humanity and what she is fighting for and what side he will be on when the time comes was very poignant, and it was a nice touch to have her wipe the tear off his face.

Also, was that the first time we heard a character say the name of the show. That was neat.
