FOX Passes On 3 Comedy Pilots, Studio City Not Dead

Thanks to Jovan and Mr. Edmodo for the heads up.

A few hours ago, word was that FOX had passed on Studio City.

This has been one of the biggest shockers so far this upfront season — the generally well received Fox drama pilot Studio City coming short at the end. Instead, the little talked about Lucifer adaptation had a meteoric last-minute rise and appears headed to the Fox schedule, to be joined by already picked up medical drama Rosewood and pending Minority Report and Frankenstein. While Fox is yet to make the final calls on its drama pilots, Studio City star Eric McCormack confirmed its demise at Fox on Twitter. “So wanted to share good news. But no: Fox is NOT picking up #StudioCity,” he wrote. “America, you’d have LOVED this f**king show.

Also not going forward at Fox are comedy pilots Fantasy Life, 48 Hours ‘Til Monday, Detour and The Perfect Stanleys.

That may no longer be the case:

This may be the most twisty story this upfront. After looking like a lock for weeks, Fox’s drugs-and-music drama pilot Studio City started to fade fast a couple of days ago when dark horse Lucifer began its rapid rise. Things were not looking good for Studio City, which was facing the possibility of being the only Fox drama pilot this season not to get a series order. Fox had not made all of its its drama calls yet last night when Studio City star Eric McCormack announced on Twitter that Fox was not picking up the show, with creator Krista Vernoff indicating that the pilot would be shopped elsewhere.

That may turn out to be one big misunderstanding, which won’t be surprising given the craziness and confusion in the final days before the upfronts when the fate of dozens of pilots and series are decided, with news and speculation sometime getting mixed up. While Studio City indeed will not be picked up heading into Fox’s upfront presentation on Monday and won’t be announced as part of the network’s 2015-16 schedule, I hear the project won’t be released and may be revisited after the upfronts, possibly for midseason.
