The Returned - Lucy - Advance Preview

The Returned, “Lucy,” was directed by Jennifer Getzinger with the teleplay by Bronwyn Garrity. Once again, the episode follows multiple storylines with no real emphasis on any one character. It’s beginning to be curious to me as to why episodes are named after various characters – other than the flashback is about them. So, yes, the episode flashback is to Lucy’s (Leah Gibson) arrival in Caldwell a year ago.

It’s always difficult to tease an episode that relies on suspense and surprising revelations, so forgive me if I’m as cryptic as possible! Lucy’s condition takes an unexpected turn with surprising developments. Claire (Tandi Wright) has her eyes opened about Lena (Sophie Lowe) in a couple of ways. Peter (Jeremy Sisto) and Henry/Victor (Dylan Kingwell) go on a road trip to visit a grave. Jack (Mark Pellegrino) ends up seeming more together than a lot of the other characters. Julie (Sandrine Holt) visits Helen (Michelle Forbes) and learns Victor’s history. Three couples have sex while one couple does not. Two characters contemplate suicide.

Here are some dialogue teasers from the episode:

“He’s scared for you.”
“Maybe it’s time I start seeing what’s right in front of me.”
“It’s not like she’s dead or anything.”
“I’ve never seen anything like that. There’s no medical precedent.”
“This is going to hurt.”
“How do you know if you’re dead?”
“I’m asking your forgiveness, but I understand if you can’t give it.”

As with previous episodes, this one is beautifully shot. The acting continues to be excellent. This episode starts to offer some explanation for why these people are returning from the dead. The episode also starts to up the creepy factor. Be sure to tune in on April 13 at 10/9c on A&E!
