Grey's Anatomy - Crazy Love - Review

I guess it was only a matter of time before Grey Sloan doctors started chasing chopped off penises around the surgical floor. With April back in the swing of things and Catherine swooping in, mending AND busting balls, episode 11.19, Crazy Love was a rip roaring treat; a melody of melodrama and fun. It was not a filler nor was it pivotal but it was highly entertaining. And there was MerDer sex.

Derek is back in the sack and getting his groove on only to get up and leave for one final trip to DC. His parting words “don’t move, wait for me” – where did we hear that before....candles anyone? Watching Meredith and Derek reunite together over family breakfast and sexy times reminded us of how solid this couple is – at least on the surface. I can’t help wondering about doom on the horizon because surely this couple can’t stay this happy? By the end of the episode Derek appears to be missing and we are left to wonder if his disappearance will be explained by noble deeds or caddish affairs. And is it significant that he lost his ‘White House issue’ phone then found it? Surprisingly I am left thinking 'do I really care?' and 'surely this is the end of the road for MerDer storylines?'. What story is left to tell us for this couple now? I found myself much more interested in the other characters in the show, and perhaps that's the point. Time to move on from the old guard and onto the new perhaps. You may not want to hear that if you are hard core MerDer but if this show is to have any legs left perhaps it's good that Dempsey is taking time off.

Not to Stephanie though.

Stephanie can’t figure out what to do. Put your hand up if you long for an intern as focused as Cristina was on cardio; single minded, obsessed even? Oh...wait....we had Shane. Scrap that thought. I can’t be bothered to invest in Stephanie’s woes. I’ve no interest in what specialty she does, though I applauded Catherine’s offer to give her a urology fellowship – aka she leaves the show. Stephanie darling you’d be great at handling Penis! Instead I focused my attention on her amusing flustered innuendo moment passing penis to Jackson and the wonderful direction of this unusual story of twisted love. Love makes us behave in strange ways and cutting off a penis is certainly strange. Both wife and lover chose this as their revenge act but in a stroke of luck Catherine was there to save the day and the phallus.

Dr Avery senior flew in with dramatic flair at the behest of her daughter-in-law April. What a sweet reunion it was, with a hilarious twist of “How is it?”
“It was only in the stock pot for two minutes”. While I did love the previous teasing banter between Catherine and April of old it is even nicer to see Avery senior treating April with familial and professional respect now. Who remembers the episode with a virginal April cringing over a penis under the Catherine knife previously? Setting aside the rather ridiculous premise of jilted sous chef re-slicing the...um... meat and threatening it with a toilet bath this comedic storyline was a welcome treat. In recent years Grey’s has lost it’s dark comic edge and although this bounces on the fringes of dark, it does show that the writers can still pull it off.

Amelia versus Callie. New Neuro God versus Ortho Rock star. Owen is the umpire. Callie and Amelia went head to head over who had the best solution for the brattish golfer’s bendy back. In the end I couldn’t figure out who. Callie conceded that Amelia had the right plan but unfortunately Amelia is stuck in Amelia’s own head. Her confidence is all over the place. We thought it was sorted when Herman walked out of the OR instead of being rolled out in a bag but apparently not. Owen, doing what Owen normally does as chief of surgery, wades in to assist a decision and favours the superstar approach. I’m guessing that he just thought the golf game was worth saving rather than bigging up his girlfriend. I felt a bit sorry for him really.

Never one to defend Owen normally but come on Amelia, give the guy a break. Amelia is heading towards a season finale crash. I can’t help but feel that’s what Amelia does – she crashes. I don’t want to see it, being familiar with PPP I saw enough of that. In Grey’s surely she needs a different road, still in character but not a giant crash.

And Meredith is interfering –by the way Meredith what business is it of yours what Owen does or what Amelia does?

And also where was Alex with the golfer? Why wasn’t he around slapping the brat down?

Callie’s confidence is high. She has her self belief back not only professionally but personally. She knows she’s good. She knows she’s worth something now. Whether or not the intention is to bring Callie and Arizona back together the writers are doing a great job in building these two back up after tearing them down. Arizona is still lacking her own ‘support’ group but both these ladies are getting their characters back. Never was this more evident than when Callie completely dismisses the policeman. I had high hopes for that and within a flash they are dashed. What was the point of all the flirtation last week? Was it to reassure us that Callie is still into guys? Do we need that reassurance? We’re grown ups aren’t we? We know that Callie falls for the person not the gender. Don’t we? Or was it to show us that Callie is strong enough now to know her own mind when it comes to intimate relationships, that she has self worth again and knows she’s awesome and doesn’t have to take the first person who comes along? Either way, with the cop it was a lot of build up for rather a let down. I would’ve liked to see Callie come to that realization herself rather than be told it...however humorously. And it was funny.

Last week I decided to ship Alex and Maggie. And OMG here we are with Maggie seeking dating advice from Alex. These two make a great couple and the more I see them together the more I realize what a waste of screen Jo is. I wonder if during hiatus the writers will go about figuring a way to exit Jo from Alex’s life in order to build up Maggie. Or is that wishful thinking? Sorry Jolex fans...I know you get annoyed when I talk like this but I’m still not convinced by Jo and not sure what it will take for me to change my mind.

Maggie’s date with Ethan was a disaster. The story telling of this character has been wonderful all season. We have found out so much about Maggie, a lot of it has endeared her to us that her status on the show is almost on par with some of the old timers. The insight we are given about the date is great writing. She talks a lot and she’s talked a lot through the season. She uses LOTS of words in almost every scene she’s in. More words than she needs. This is consistent from the moment we meet her. Therefore when Ethan points out to her that she talks too much on a date it’s entirely believable that it happened. This is the “show” people. This is the writers showing us the characters. And in doing so with Maggie they shine a spotlight on how badly they have “shown” us Jo. We’ve had snippets – violence – but not enough to be engaged with this character. I loved the Alex Maggie moments and really hope there are more to come.

11.19 Crazy Love was crazy, comical, well written, well directed and just plain fun. There was little not to like about it and although it doesn’t shine out as a season stealer it was certainly not a waste of forty two minutes.

PS. Who spotted young Bailey fishing melon balls off his table. Priceless.
