Hawaii Five-0 - Ho'oilina - Review: "An Emotional Ride"

Episode 5.05 - "Ho'oilina" (Hawaiian for 'Legacy')

Directed By: Bryan Spicer

NOTE: Due to personal reasons, Allyson will not be able to continue to review Hawaii Five-0, therefore I will be taking over for the rest of the season.

Hawaii Five-0 demonstrated a great and emotional episode this week, and definitely the cliffhanger will keep viewers intrigued. This episode followed the task-force solving a cold case that meant a lot to Steve's father, it also introduced us to a new love interest for Steve.

Steve goes to visit his father's grave on the fourth anniversary of his death and meets a woman named Ellie Clayton. Her father was killed and his father investigated and stayed in her life to check in with her. She's now a Deputy Prosecutor.

Everyone is helping Jerry move out. He sneaks away and Chin catches him listening to the people at the bookstore, tells him for the third time to back off.

Steve asks Chin if he remembers the case, he remembers one suspect was a homeless man named Burrows who had an alibi and disappeared. Realizing how much the case meant to his dad, he decides to reopen it and try to solve it.

Flashback: A man walks into the bar and shoots Ellie's dad. It doesn't look like a robbery. Steve tells Ellie he has a lead but not to get her hopes up.

Back at the precinct, the team locates the homeless man, who admits he hid a box he stole from near the crime scene. Steve concludes that the murder was a hit.

Steve asks Ellie if she remembers any strange behavior and she recalls her father arguing with a young man named Jordan. He's in jail now, Chin and Steve visit him. He was selling meth and Paul was trying to help him get out. It was hard because his mom was a junkie in debt to a dealer named Sykes. But he didn't commit the murder.

Steve calls in to check in on Danny, who is out of town with his family in the wake of his brother's death.

Flashback: Chin remembers John going to Ellie's home on Christmas day and bringing her a present.

Steve finds Ellie at the bar, which she's never had the heart to sell. He shows her a picture of the membership to an underground gambling club and tells her that her father's murder could have been connected to that. But she knows for a fact that he quit his gambling habit before she was ever born. Steve asks to exhume her father's body for more evidence.

Jerry sends Kamekona's cousin to the bookstore to get the book back, but he's told it's already sold.

The team gets more evidence that Ellie's father might have been a card shark who got mixed up with a gang. They match the gun to another shooting and connect it to a man named Malua. They find him, but he swears he didn't pull the trigger. It was his friend Sykes.

They ask Jordan for help to catch Sykes. They need evidence so they send him undercover claiming to be looking for work and get Sykes to admit to the murder on tape. But Jordan loses it and beats on Sykes and gets himself shot, causing the team to have to take out Sykes.

Jerry comes home to find the owner of the bookstore waiting for him and before he can say much a bag is thrown over his head and he's taken away.

Hawaii Five-0 always delivers when it comes to emotional and touching episodes, this one was no exception, this episode was exceptional. From the start of the episode, I knew that this episode was going to be a great one. It sure was, I sure hope we see Ellie again soon.

I really thought the music brought this episode together as a whole, the opening scene was really emotional. Steve talking to his dad about his life and how he would be a great grandfather was really touching, Hawaii Five-0 never fails to do this.

I really thought that the Steve-Ellie relationship could turn into something in the near future, with Steve fare-welling Catherine at the end of last season, I sure want something to come out of these two. Ellie does have some sort of connection to Steve, through his Dad. John cared a lot about Ellie, and that means a lot to Steve, and surely these two can make something of it.

It definitely was great seeing John again in the flashbacks, and Steve getting closure about his family is definitely something that Steve can be thankful for. Steve still doesn't understand why John sent Steve and his sister away, but now Steve knows it was for his own good.

The car scene was one of my favorite scenes in this episode, it really bridged the connection between Steve and Ellie. Also, the flashback scene to when Ellie and her father started dancing in the bar, that scene was beautiful. Finally, the scene where Ellie's father is getting exhumed, and Steve holds onto Ellie's hand, this scene was just touching.

Now, onto the Jerry storyline, I think it's really going to get interesting now that Jerry has been captured, maybe the task-force will actually believe him now? Jerry definitely did the right thing trying to get the book back, but I am very intrigued to see where this storyline goes.

I thought this episode helped Steve get closer to his family, in particular his father, he learnt a lot from this episode, and got introduced to someone his father deeply cared about. I think this meant a lot to him, his father may be gone, but knowing all these things about him now, that means everything for Steve.

Quotes from the Episode

Ellie: "As painful as this is, I want to catch the man who took my father away from me. Do what you have to do."

Kamekona: "You know what your problem is? You're a hoarder."
Jerry: "Yeah, a hoarder of truth."

Steve: "Obviously, this meant a lot to my dad. I owe it to him to try and solve it."

John: "She’s just a kid. She needs people in her life."

Dr. Shaw: "Compulsive hoarding is a symptom of OCD, have you ever been diagnosed?"
Jerry: "Oh yeah, Dr. Shaw? Hanging around dead people all day could be considered borderline necrophilia. Have you ever been diagnosed?"
