"Why do they have to be separate?
Why does there have to be two?"
- Lucille to Henry about Jacob

There are many theories floating around the web lately about where exactly the 'returned' in Resurrection came from or why they appeared in the first place. They are definitely interesting and creative and, having not read the book the show is based on, I suppose it could be any one of them...well, maybe not ANY of them. The most popular theory is the 'returned' are from another planet implying they are aliens sent to Earth in the form of our deceased. Other theories include the Devil's hand is involved in their revival with each of the 'returned' having various devious missions to complete. I won't bore you with all the other theories but the most interesting is that the entire show is a prequel to the television show LOST. I'll admit I haven't the slightest idea of why some deceased have returned or why it is this time period they have decided to reanimate but I can say that the story is told well enough to make me eager to watch the next episode. The cliffhangers the writers leave us are perfect in drawing viewers to each subsequent episode and with only 8 episodes in the first season and 5 left each episode is only going to get better and more intriguing.

The third episode, 'Two Rivers', begins where episode two left us with Marty and Maggie investigating the remains of Jacob Langston. Many people thought that the coffin would be empty or filled with various items in lieu of a decomposing body. There was, in fact, Jacob's remains inside dressed in the same garb he woke up wearing in that small village in China. If Jacob's body was in the coffin then who is that other Jacob walking around with all of his memories? Is it his soul? A robot with his memories installed (that one is crazier than the LOST theory)? Are the 'returned' just a doppelganger of their former lives? One interesting clue that we get is with the tag of Jacob's shirt that Marty snips from Jacob's shirt that he wore when he was laid to rest. He compares the 'old' tag with the 'new' tag and what is noticeable is that the old tag is worn and faded while the new tag looks like it was just purchased. I'll gather some of the clues I notice at the bottom so they are all in one place.

Marty and Maggie seem to be getting closer and are spending a lot of time together as Marty has decided to stay in town and figure out what exactly is happening to this small town. They go on a mission to investigate Caleb and his cabin in the woods to find numerous dug up sites around the premises and in one they recover a mask, which last week appeared to be the head of a dead body. Ray, Caleb's son, is caught following them and then confesses he knows who Caleb really is. It turns out Ray had the same idea that some fans had and that aliens are answer for the dead coming back to life. Maggie tells an interesting story to Marty about an old Civil War battle near where the two rivers in the town merge and they say the river turned red with blood. A flood also destroyed an entire Osage village downstream.
Caleb continues to be a shady character and this episode does not help our view of him. He is on Marty's radar as being suspicious and after seeing the newspaper clipping of the bank robbery suspects Caleb was behind it. Marty goes to pay him a visit and learns that Caleb doesn't know how he came back to life but he knows why; to protect and take care of his family. Marty warns him to stay away from Jacob and continues his investigation of Caleb. He goes to the home of Dale Getheard, the man that found Caleb after he had a massive coronary and died 13 years ago, only to find that Dale has been beaten (read: hammered) to death. We know that Caleb was behind it but wonder if Caleb left any clues for Marty to stumble upon.

Episode 3, Two Rivers, was the slowest of the season so far but did give us some more clues as to why Jacob and Caleb have returned from the dead. The two rivers is an obvious reference to the rivers that snake through the town, but it of course has a deeper meaning. There are two of Jacob and Henry can't seem to come to grips with the whole situation. The 'old' Jacob that Henry buried, and we catch a glimpse of, in the beginning of the episode is the sweet boy and son he remembers. The 'new' Jacob is someone that Henry does not know; he is new like the tag on his shirt that Marty compared to the original. The two rivers merge but when will the memory of Jacob meet with the new ones that are forming inside Henry now that Jacob has returned? The episode ends on another cliffhanger. The juxtaposition of the scenes with Marty (his river) finding death was brilliant when overlapping with Tom (and his river) finding life. The episode felt slow but I still enjoyed it and I'm sure it plays an important role into the larger story. The appearance of Rachael makes things much more interesting and I can't wait to hear her story in next episode.

Thoughts and Questions

Clues - Maggie says that half of Caleb's ashes were spread onto the river and postulates that since Jacob died in the river then possibly the river has something to with them coming back.

Clues - Marty removes the shirt tag from Jacob's remains and compares it to the tag on the shirt Jacob 'came back' wearing. The old tag looks worn and faded with Jacob's name in the same handwriting written at the top of it. The 'new' tag has the same information but looks brand new. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm? What could that mean?

Did you notice...Tom tells Helen that God will show us the way before Helen replies, "Are you sure He is the one behind this?"

Did you notice...Dog's continuously bark whenever Caleb is around?

Did you notice...No one seems to want or be able to hand the 'returned' anything? This might be a stretch but I noticed when Ray went to hand Caleb a washer for the motorcycle he draws his hand back in fear and when Henry goes to hand something to Jacob he cuts his forearm on the saw resulting him needing to go to the hospital.

Is Barbara (Jacob's aunt, Maggie's mother, Feed's wife), who also died in the river with Jacob, in the house of the man she was having an affair with? I wondered why she didn't 'come back' like Jacob and Caleb and it could be she is just hiding out until the writers want to reveal her.

Could Sam Caitlin, the man that was having an affair with Barbara, be Maggie's real father? Possibly irrelevant, but, you never know.

Why do the 'returned' eat so much? Rachael is the latest of the 'returned' and I'm sure we will get more clues form her in episode 4 on Sunday. My guess is she will have a hefty appetite as well.
