-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by “The Big Bang Theory,” CBS had no trouble winning this final Thursday in February. But the network may have sprung a leak at 9:30 p.m. Sheldon and Leonard and company opened with an 11.4 rating/18 share in the household overnights at 8 p.m., which topped the night with ease. Next was freshman “The Millers” at a typical 6.8/11, which was a hefty 40 percent below “The Big Bang Theory” but still enough to inch past the second half of competing “American Idol” on Fox (6.7/11) by one-tenth of a rating point.
At 9 p.m., relocated “Two and a Half Men” was perfectly compatible out of “The Millers” with a second-place 6.6/10. But also relocated “The Crazy Ones” slipped to a 4.7/ 7 (#2) at 9:30 p.m., which was 29 percent below renewal worthy “Two and a Half Men.” Sophomore drama “Elementary” perked up to a 5.7/10 in the overnights at 10 p.m., but that trailed the return of “Scandal” on ABC (6.9/12) by 17 percent. And “Scandal” will, no doubt, have a larger advantage in the key demos.
Of the three remaining new comedies on CBS this season (“We Are Men” was axed after two painful episodes last fall), “Mom” on Monday seems the most likely to return.
Over at ABC, 8 p.m. special “Countdown to the Oscars” did not take the ratings gold, with a third-place 3.5/ 6 at 8 p.m. But the return of veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” rose to first in the 9 p.m. hour with a 7.0/11. And it led into aforementioned “Scandal” at a very compatible 6.9/12.
On Fox, tired “American Idol” slipped to second with a 6.5/10 at 8 p.m., which was 23 percent below the 8.5/14 one year earlier. And it led into struggling Greg Kinnear drama “Rake” at a fourth-place 2.4/ 4 at 9 p.m. Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.
Elsewhere, NBC remained out of the competitive Thursday loop with its line-up of comedies “Parks and Recreation” (#4: 2.0/ 3) and “Community” (#4: 2.1/ 3), relocated “Hollywood Game Night” (#3: 2.5/ 4) and family drama “Parenthood” (#3: 2.5/ 4), which has not made an impact at all on this evening this season.
The CW capped off the evening with already renewed dramas “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.5/ 2) and “Reign” (#5: 1.2/ 2), which doubled the year-ago overnight average because “The Vampire Diaries” and then Thursday 9 p.m. occupant “Beauty and the Beast” were in repeats.

Ouch at The Crazy Ones.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know what's Scandal high on HH?
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid TCO will hurt Elementary.
ReplyDeleteGreat news for #Scandal!
ReplyDeleteScandal and Grey's ratings look promising
ReplyDeleteHurray for Scandal, Elemenatry, Greys and Big Bang. Extremely sad about The Crazy Ones
ReplyDelete7.9/14. A 6.9/12 is the second highest for the series.
ReplyDeleteReign seems to have the same household numbers as The Tomorrow People. Still wondering why it got such an early renewal.
ReplyDeleteGo Grey's and Scandal (great eps last night)
ReplyDeleteAbc must be happy they finally had a good night!
Great for Scandal, terrible for The Crazy Ones; I'm not holding my breath for the show anymore, it will probably get cancelled :(
ReplyDeleteThank you! So we can expect something in the range of 3.0 to maybe, 3.5, right?
ReplyDeleteThe metered market ratings for this episode is tied with the 3rd episode of Season 3 and that one earned a 3.3. I'm crossing my finger it slightly increased. Considering ABC has been going through a terrible slump, this has to be a success!
ReplyDeleteIndeed! And Grey looks very promising. ABC would be mad to break this block apart considering how well it works.
ReplyDeleteHappy for Scandal and Grey's Anatomy.
ReplyDeleteHH ratings don't really correlate with the A18 to 49.
ReplyDeleteknow how to read ratings first, those aren't viewership!!
ReplyDeleteThats looks low for TVD
ReplyDeleteonline numbers ? xD
ReplyDeleteyou know...itunes and views on theCW.com don't make anything
The reasons everyone listed below but also two more:1.CW supports Reign.Pedowitz came out to its theme music and said he was bullish about it and looked foward to it returning & 2.Reign is growing its timeslot, improving very slightly over what BatB did in the slot last season while TTP has done far below what SPN in in the timeslot after Arrow last season.Except for four to five weeks so far,Reign has had better ratings than TTP.
ReplyDeleteyes, the cw mentioned it to be strong, TTP may be, but there's no information yet.
ReplyDeleteNetflix and Hulu where CW has a multimillion several seasons deal so shows that do well there make CW money just like Carrie Diaries last season and HoD in season one
ReplyDeleteI know, but those translate into viewers, that's why Arrow has stronger HH numbers.
ReplyDeletei know. But a 1.5 HH ratings usually translates to under 2 million viewers
ReplyDeleteyeah, but still it had to face the return of all shows. Grey's anatomy won^t be strong like this next week for sure. It already faced gre'ys and managed 0.6s.
ReplyDeleteI know about HH ratings not saying anything and it is the demos that count. I was just pointing out that both shows have the same HH ratings. This could indicate that Reign can still slide to a ratings level similar to The Tomorrow People's.
ReplyDeleteNo? you should read this article http://www.deadline.com/2013/11/cw-gives-full-season-orders-to-freshman-series-the-originals-the-tomorrow-people-reign/
ReplyDeleteAccording to Sitcomsonline, Scandal came back with a 3.7 in the top 25 markets. Hope it doesn't drop much from here.
ReplyDeleteyou do know that Reign isn't even on netflix yet ?
ReplyDeleteYet, that's what saved The Carrie Diaries (last season).
ReplyDeletejust because Pedowitz says that they're ''growing exponentially' that doesen't make it their saving grace
ReplyDeletethe 'Sex and the City' license is what saved Carrie Diaries
ReplyDeleteTrue. It's not the renewal itself that I doubt per se, it's just the early renewal. If you see that Reign and TTP have the same HH ratings, it could mean that Reign isn't doing that much better than TTP (of course, have to wait for demo numbers). Plus, Reign hadn't had their biggest challenge yet: airing without TVD as lead-in.
ReplyDeleteI meant this: The soapy Reign and similarly female skewing sophomore The Carrie Diaries have been getting particularly strong traction in digital viewing.
ReplyDelete'let's get it over with and decide before we break our heads over it' might've been the mantra on that one.
ReplyDeleteNellie Andreeva of Deadline explained why The Carrie Diaries has been saved last season. With all the due respect, she clearly knows more about tv things than us.
ReplyDeleteYeah but circumstances can change, Idol is stronger then X factor, Greys could come back stronger (at least the HH rating seem higher then before the break), VD numbers can fall also. And i think how Reign handles airing on its own will tell more about season 2 (where it will be moved).
ReplyDeleteI wroter other possible reasons, but maybe you still have to read them.
ReplyDeleteno one is questioning the renewal tough, just the early one. The fact that Reign got renewed before TTP could prove itself on a different night (unlikely but still...) has been kinda surprising on my end
ReplyDeleteShe definitely does and I'll give her article a read.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't a well kept secret tough that the license theCW aquired with Carrie Diaries was a heavily valuable one.The chance of selling TCD alongside with Sex and the City into syndication was too promising to give up after a single season.
Imagine the financial success this show could've been if sold (I don't know if it actually has) into syndication with the mother show ? The show wouldn't even have to closely scratch the 100 mark, just have a sizable ammount of episodes, because SATC already has 94 episodes on its resume. Carrie Diaries could have (or is, as I said I don't know if Warner is offering that package deal) lived as a 'parasite' to SATC (obviously I don't care for either show but I recognise the SATC licenses worth).
If I was running a female oriented network I'd go for a SATC+TCD+SATC: The Movie+SATC 2 package deal
I understand all your (possible) reasons, and, like mac says, I am not questioning the renewal itself. The only thing I keep wondering is why they renewed it so early when Reign still has to prove to be lead-in independent (airing without TVD in a couple of weeks) and when TTP didn't have a chance to prove itself.
ReplyDeleteCan you provide a link to an article that says Carrie Diaries was renewed to sell into syndication alongside SaTC?
ReplyDeleteTVD and Reign are both down but i see it's not much of a diference i will wait till the final numbers that i understand better...
ReplyDeleteThe Big Bang Theory as always winning the night and Greys Anatomy up! that's good
And Scandal beats Modern Family and The Blacklist to stand as the #1 show on Modern Family for the week and the #1 drama overall.
ReplyDeleteOuch for Rake and Elementary. Scandal hit them hard.
ReplyDeleteI bet TBBT will beat Scandal (since you included comedies and drama)
ReplyDeletestand as the #1 show on Modern Family for the week
ReplyDeleteWhat?
At this rate Reign will rate higher than Rake
ReplyDeleteLowest rated TBBT episode since April. I wonder why that is.
ReplyDeleteTCO didn't fall at all.
Brandy, don't try. There are a lot of Reign haters.
ReplyDeleteIf Revolution stays at 1.3 AND Parenthood stays at 1.1--AND one of them gets saved...which one?
ReplyDeleteBoth will get cancelled?
ReplyDeleteit doesn't have to face idol.
ReplyDeleteOh look reign got a .5

And TTP beat it this week too so far. We have to wait to the final ratings though.
ReplyDeleteProbably Parenthood cause it survived the death slot and has had 0.7 lead ins before but still stayed over a 1.0. I dont think NBC will want to keep Revolution for another two seasons with those ratings. I think Parenthood will be renewed for a 12-13 episode final season and Revolution gets cancelled. If Rev does get cancelled, NBC should move it to another channel like Syfy or something.
ReplyDeleteTBBT took a hit upon return! 4.6 is still huge, but still sharply down from its last original.
ReplyDeleteThe timeslot shift helped both Two and a Half Men and The Crazy Ones; it seems TCO will battle against Mom for renewal.
Community and Parks held on 1, hope next week both can increase, even if it's just a tenth
Considering TB is on NBC, this whole premise is lost to me.
ReplyDelete@TVMoJoe says that TBBT got 4.6.
ReplyDeleteIdol sometimes has 2 hours shows on Thursdays as it gets closer to finale.
ReplyDelete4.9 actually.
ReplyDeleteOh, then it's not that big of a drop, but I still expected a 5
ReplyDeleteI was expecting mid 5s.
ReplyDeleteI've been saying all season that CBS made a mistake in not putting TAAHM at 9/8 to serve as a "hammock" between TBBT and TM and as lead-in to TCO. Putting back-to-back new shows just didn't make sense.
ReplyDelete" “Mom” on Monday seems the most likely to return." I likeeeee
ReplyDeleteHe is a huge Mom fan.
ReplyDeleteBrief notes:
ReplyDelete-It kills me to see that Community and Parks both hit series lows yet both are third in their slot. They deserve so much better. I still see 'em getting renewed, though - even assuming the Tuesday comedies are hits, what happens when they move off of Tuesdays? What's going to fill in for the inevitable fall bombs? Parenthood is a harder call because NBC can afford to cut some of its older dramas, but it's still pulling better numbers than any show has managed in the past two years. Hmm.
-Really good numbers for the ABC dramas. ABC's going to have to face some tough decisions next season. Do you stick with what's working or try to boost another night?
-CBS made the right move flipping the 9PM comedies - TaaHM has much better retention than TCO ever managed. As for TCO, I have a hard time seeing it coming back when Mom is doing the same numbers against harder competition and a weaker lead-in. Elementary did okay, though it'll probably reach 88 and wrap up.
-Abysmal for Rake. Wow. I know the American Idol lead-in is the best FOX has right now, but it doesn't look like it counts for much. I wonder what this means for Surviving Jack. And I didn't expect American Idol to be in the low 2s in February; it'll be hitting 1s by April.
The CW has a bad week!
ReplyDeleteTVD, TO, Reign, S-C reaching low points. Arrow and Supernatural down. Only TTP up. Maybe it'll see a second season.
Being TBBT probably it will adjust up 3 tenths on the finals to 5.2
ReplyDeleteTBBT has been really stable this season, maybe it already peaked? It doesn't seem it will hit 6s any time soon. Well, even if it doesn't it is still the highest rated show on broadcast network
TTP was actually flat with its last original
ReplyDeleteTTP was even actually.
ReplyDeleteAnd proud to be one.
ReplyDeleteShe's probably talking total viewers (which is irrelevent as far as ratings, of course, but still nice for the fans).
ReplyDeleteProbably Parenthood if those conditions are met, but I still think both of them could be renewed. However, for that Revolution needs to start pulling 1.4-1.5s, which it can do, but if it stays on 1.3 it's only chance is NBC willing to give it a shoot on Fridays either before or after Grimm
ReplyDeleteI expect at least one to get renewed, if only as midseason spackle. NBC has The Blacklist, Chicago Fire/PD, SVU, and Grimm (5 hours). Then The Voice (3 hours), The Biggest Loser (1 hour), Dateline (1 hour) and two comedies (probably the Tuesday comedies - 1 hour), which leaves 5 hours open from Monday to Friday in the fall. Even assuming they launch 4 hours of new programming, something is bound to fail...they'll need some good timeslot filler.
ReplyDeleteI personally think Revolution/Grimm/Insert International Co-Production Here would make a lovely Friday schedule (and would also allow NBC to slot in Dateline at Wednesday 8PM, plugging what's been one of their weakest timeslots) but that's just me.
I can see Parenthood staying put where it is and Revolution being moved to Fridays either before or after Grimm, making a genre theme night
ReplyDeleteBoth Supernatural, TTP and TVD is even with their last originals. Arrow, The Originals and Reign is down.
ReplyDeleteI think Emerald City would be better suited with Grimm.
ReplyDeleteWow so Reign could be season low? Possibly even worse than TTP's season low
ReplyDeleteTTP beat it only in total viewers which don't matter. They tied in demo. But retention wise they were the same in demo but in total viewers Reign 1.31 out of VD 1.94 while TTP got 1.53 out of Arrows 2.46 .But Reigns already renewd so it dosent matter.
ReplyDeleteI swear i'll loose itt if they cancel Elementary!
ReplyDeleteNice going Grey's...
Yes, of course. lol Sorry.
ReplyDeleteThis is Reign first 0.5 while TTP has had several 0.5s.Plus,Reigns renewed already so it dosent matter.
ReplyDeleteIt will all depend which pilots NBC picks up, and if Hannibal is renewed. If Hannibal is renewed, it will stay in Fridays at 10PM and Revolution could only go to 8PM, and that's if no pilot is picked up to air in that timeslot
ReplyDeleteIt all depends on how TTP does on Mon and how The 100 does. But the fact they're moving TTP and already renewed Reign dosent bode well for TTP.
ReplyDeleteThey won't. They already have a syndication deal for it, remember?
ReplyDeleteParenthood is particularly disappointing this week--it has been going up over the comedies but this week it dropped from the show before it.
ReplyDeleteTO and Supernatural arguably have a reason for their lows. They were pre-empted in some places and wont air until Saturday.
ReplyDeleteIsn't Friday Dateline on at 8?
ReplyDeleteI believe it still matters, just not for renewal anymore. The higher the ratings stay now, the better advertising price it'll get next season. Considering Reign is more expensive it'll need the better advertising price.
ReplyDeleteOuch Reign 0.5 & VD under 2 million viewers!
ReplyDeleteI realized after i wrote it,but added on as an edit when i remembered. :P
ReplyDeleteOf course it matters. I'm a big Reign fan but if the ratings keep falling then they won't get much money for it next year, they will then push it to Friday which would mean it would have almost zero chance of a 3rd Season.
ReplyDeleteYes, I know TTP had more 0.5s but well at least in viewers, TTP's lowest was 1.38 0.5/1 so 1.31 0,5/1 could be worse I guess
ReplyDeleteElementary could do 0.9s and still be renewed with that insane syndication it got. 3 million for each episode! It probably covers any production costs it has. Even if it earned 40k for 30 seconds advertisement (which is CW level) it would still make profit
ReplyDeleteThey can move it to Sunday, they have done it before and aired scripted shows at 8PM
ReplyDeleteIt scored 1.9 while the last 2.5 men original did a 1.8, so I don't think it will hurt it at all, probably it will be just more of the same
ReplyDeleteBoth Reign and TTP are about the same ratings-wise now. In fact TTP's last Live +7 ratings were higher than Reign's I think.
ReplyDeleteAgain: my limited view of things, there's no article and no nothing to back that up. Still licenses for successfull franchises gotta be worth something, right ?
ReplyDelete@ eelena: I don't hate Reign, I dislike its storytelling etc. but that doesen't connect with ratings for me. If a show sucks, it sucks. I just won't watch it. Doesen't mean I won't talk about its ratings.
Reign had it dificult going agains greys i hope it adjust up but i doubt that, TVD has manage to stay at 1 going agains Idol and TBBT but on a night both show were kind of down it really weird seeing the show on 0.9 but you know what im happy with those number im not feeling the show since after the 100 episode and i guess is showing...
ReplyDeleteGreys anatomy, i havent watched teh episode but witha 3.0 that mean it`s a really good im really happy it`s back on the 3 after spent so much time on middle 2's.
TBBT will adjust up s always does so no need to worries and TaHM that time change really help them altho it was not the best episode i like is up again....
it matters, there will be 22 further episodes. That's for sure.
ReplyDeleteBUT budget could be cut (and I don't think Reign can cut many corners) and of course it could simply be take off the air. Just because a show gets shot doesen't mean its getting aired (there're tons of shows that suffered that fate, Drive being one example). TheCW is currently burning off BatB, I don't think they'll repeat the strategy they went with this year.
I don't want to sound rude but I never saw Reign or TTP going past two seasons.
I'm sure theCW regrets the early renewal
Very good news for TAHM!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing all CW shows hit a low together. For a moment i was worried about TO.
ReplyDeleteSPN also wasn't down in the demo, just total viewers.
ReplyDeleteYes,i know.As soon as i wrote that i remembered about the deal they made with WGN,so they will be renewed. I was too lazy to go back in and fix it. :P
ReplyDeleteas long as it goes back up to normal levels next week its fine, even TVD had a bad day yesterday but that doesnt mean it will stay at that level for the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteAlso Reign is still the 5th highest rated show on the CW so it still makes sense that it was renewed. The CW can not afford to replace half the schedule next fall.
Where Beauty and Reign differ is that CW this season have 4 decently rated shows in TVD, TO. SPN and Arrow and assuming that they pick up a maximum of 3 new shows for the fall that will leave 1 of those top rated shows to be a lead in for Reign. It is most likely that the TO/Reign pairing will happen next season which should keep both at decentish levels. Thats not to say Reign's ratings will garner a third season because we dont know how all the new shows will perform but at least they'll be giving it a shot.
Beauty was renewed because it was still the 4th highest rated show on the CW last season. It collapsed due to content and wasn't exactly helped by the fact that it had a crappy lead in either.
-total viewers doesnt matter, Arrow has more viewers than TVD but TVD is still the number 1 show on the net
ReplyDelete-Reign is ahead in A18-49, A18-34, W18-49, W18-34, digital viewing
-Reign also makes more money in ad revenue
off course the ratings matter even if a show is already renewed, I just think that people are forgetting that its 1 0.5 so far and it could easily rebound next week, it will obviously more night next season, we dont know how its ad ratings will be affected next season, it will be paired with a top 4 show for at least the first half of season 2. If it fails then it fails but as the 5th highest rated show on the network it was always going to be renewed unless an older show was doing near enough the same numbers or it was too expensive to produce.
ReplyDelete-SC dropped the usual amount for a show from premier to second episode
ReplyDelete-TTP still only got a 0.5 (total viewers dont count)
-with the move to Monday airing behind the poorly rated SC TTP will be lucky not to drop
-The 100 has yet to premier and if it is renewed TTP is highly unlikely to be renewed unless the CW opt to air more scripted shows on Friday.
actually at the moment The Millers is the only show that is likely to return, Mom has a shot over TCO but it might depend on how their yet to air comedies perform.
ReplyDeleteno actually it didnt because total viewer numbers dont count, so they were level in A18-49 but Reign would likely have beaten TTP in A18-34 and W18-34.
ReplyDeleteand TTP still wont be renewed
ReplyDeleteWhat of the "#1 drama OVERALL" as in 'ALL of broadcast' flew over your head?
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, Mom did also a 1.9 this week though Mom had 9M viewers I don't think that matters.
ReplyDeleteBut I were to choose between TCO and Mom, I'd pick Mom.
Nice to see TaaHM is back in the double digits
ReplyDelete
