TVLINE | I have to say, I thought I was watching a dream sequence when Jackson and April ran out of that barn alone. Were you taken aback by that yourself?
I knew it was coming from the beginning of this season, so it wasn’t a shock to me. I was like, “Oh, so we’re not going to actually see anything happen [inside] the barn? We’re not going to see that conversation [between April and Matthew] happen? It’s just the barn doors open and there you go?’” [Laughs]

TVLINE | Right?
They’re like, ‘Yes! Let’s go!’ But at the same time, I totally love that she runs off with him because I think he is her best friend and I think he’s going to challenge her in ways that Matthew couldn’t and wouldn’t have been able to. I love April and Jackson together, so it’s a mixed bag. Greys Anatomy April and Jackson Get MarriedThey’ve also just destroyed some people’s lives and that’s pretty sad. And what we begin to see with Jackson and April as the season progresses is that there are things they just have not thought about that start to come up.

TVLINE | My theory for why they didn’t show us what happened in that barn is it was just too damn ugly for broadcast television audiences.
[Laughs] I would totally agree with that! I think it would be so painful; you couldn’t actually enjoy April and Jackson being together. It’d just be too much.

TVLINE | What do you think transpired inside that barn?
I’ve gone through different versions in my head…. I think in that moment of ecstasy, they’re both just shoving away the hurt that they’re causing and the pain they’re leaving behind, like, “I can’t think about that right now because I need to embrace this decision I’m making and I need to go forward with this decision that I’m making.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So, to start, tell me about the first time you read the script for tonight’s episode.
SARAH DREW:
I remember I was so excited. I was sitting down and reading the script and giggling with glee through all of the scenes. And as soon as I saw Jesse, I said, ‘Oh my god, it’s so good!’ He was so excited too. It was fun. We knew it was coming. We were told at the beginning of the season that this whole big wedding interruption thing was going to happen and that April and Jackson were going to wind up together. So we knew this was coming. But I just think it was done really well and it was really beautiful and lovely. I didn’t know that they were going to get married immediately, so that was a surprise. It was fun. It was really cool and surprising.

So you knew they were going to end up together, you just didn’t know they were going to flash that ring at the end at send my soul into orbit?
Yes, exactly. We had been told the trajectory was April and Jackson were going to end up together after this potential wedding situation. But we didn’t know that meant marriage. And there was a lot of discussion about whether they should start their romantic relationship at that point and then work through all sorts of issues and then get to a wedding down the road or get married right away. One of the big things was that after all of this stuff about becoming a virgin again and being very committed to waiting until marriage to have sex, if April and Jackson are going to be together, they’re going to want to do that, right? [Laughs] And you can’t have her back out of that promise after that has been such an important part of her journey. And she’s not going to destroy a person’s life to date somebody. So, anyway, I guess taking all of those things into consideration they were like, ‘Okay. Well, I guess they have to get married. There’s no way around that.’ And that’s how this relationship is going to work.

I’m glad you brought up her fiancé because he wasn’t really mentioned in this episode and in the aftermath. Are we going to see them have a confrontation later on?
No. Thus far we haven’t. I think he’s just so deeply humiliated and mortified that he’s not interested in talking to her or anyone she knows. He just can’t show his face. It’s awful. Like, as awesome as it is that April and Jackson are together, what they did to Stephanie and Matthew is just horrific and so awful. They’ve left so much destruction in their wake.

April chose Jackson! How is she feeling about that decision?
Sarah Drew:
Like most decisions that April makes, she is full of confusion and lots of emotion. No matter what decision she was going to make, she was going to hurt somebody. There was no way to avoid that. Dealing with the wreckage of the heart that she just demolished in front of all of his friends and family is going to take a toll on her emotionally. But she knows that this is the right decision because she knows that Jackson is the person for her. It's bittersweet. They're so happy and so in love and grateful to have not made a mistake, but, at the same time, they've left a ton of wreckage in their wake and there are consequences to that.

Has it been hard for them to secretly date in the hospital?
Drew
: They love it. Keeping it a secret is the thing that enables them to insulate themselves and not to deal with the wreckage. They just desperately want to have honeymoon time; a moment that they can enjoy the fact that they actually realized they wanted to be together and they acted on it. There's a bit of denial of the pain that they left by keeping it secret and they want to hold onto that.

How will the new rule affect them in particular?
Drew:
It's going to be hard, but in some ways, it's going to be a huge relief to them. It's hard to keep it a secret and sneak around. It's sexy also, so there's mixed feelings about finally telling people what's going on, but they have to. There's no way to get around it. If they get caught, they could get in trouble.

April and Jackson eloped! What was your first reaction when you found out?
I knew that Jackson was going to interrupt the wedding and that April was going to wind up with him but I didn't know that they were going to get married. There was a lot of debate about whether this is a beginning of their romantic relationship and if this is where it starts vs. not doing that because April isn't just going to destroy somebody in order to start dating someone else that may or may not work. Jackson standing up and then sitting down and then standing up again and April choosing to run out the door with him was both of them saying, "I do," to each other. There is no half way. That's why the decision was made for them to immediately get married. I thought it was right for the journey of these characters. It's a bit insane but April and Jackson know each other so well. As the story develops, we will see things come out that they didn't know about each other -- things they didn't think about -- so they're going to have to pick up some pieces and do some significant navigating through these choppy waters of a crazy fast marriage.

With the hospital's new zero tolerance policy, where do Jackson and April go from here?
I don't think they are going to be able to keep it a secret for much longer. It makes them face the consequence of not only running out of the wedding but also getting married. It's a double, triple, quadruple blow to Stephanie. Not only did he just reject her and run out with this other person, but he immediately got married. It's like when two people are dating for a long time and then you find out on Facebook six months later that they're engaged to someone else -- it's crushing. It's brutal and there are going to be some fallouts from that but it makes for some fun scenes to play.

Leah and/or Stephanie presumably filed this claim. How much worse will Stephanie finding out they're married make their already rocky relationship?
It's going to be rough but everybody has to pull it together for the sake of getting their job done. The hardest thing for April and Jackson in all of this is that all they want to do is enjoy the fact that they finally realized that they are meant to be together. You want them to be able to embrace that and be in a honeymoon stage and have fun, but the fact of the matter is because of the timing they have left so much disaster in their wake that they have to work really hard to mend that. That's a lot of energy when you're trying to enjoy one another. There's guilt mixed into all of it because you hurt people but was it the right choice? Yes. But because of the way that they did it, it ends up becoming drama central.
