Albert Tsai seems like a typical 9 year old. He loves to travel, to surf and to eat donuts. He is also an incredibly talented and funny young man. You may have caught a glimpse of Albert in CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” episode 8.23, Something Old, but if you are looking for a good laugh you better check him out as young Bert in ABC's new comedy, "Trophy Wife".
Hi Albert! You are becoming quite the star. I’ve read you were named scene stealer on Trophy Wife. You share your name with the character you are playing, what else do you share with your character? Is your nickname also “Bert”?
My character Bert and I have a lot in common. We both are smart and funny, curious and kind, love animals, and like to dance.
I find you incredibly funny on Trophy Wife. Are you a real life little clown as well? Do you make your family and friends laugh often?
Yeah, in my real life, I often make my family and friends laugh. I like to see people happy. Halloween just passed coming, it was all about kids and families.
Guess what a mummy’s favorite type of music is?! It is “RAP”.
Working on a show with new episodes to film every week must be a lot of work. How do you prepare for an episode? How do you learn your lines?
First, I read the whole script to understand the story. And then I memorize all my lines, and I practice one more time at rehearsal.
What was your favorite scene to shoot, up to now on the show? What do you find is the hardest thing to shoot?
My favorite scene to film, up to now, was in the third episode that I helped my mom Jackie’s jewelry business and made her fulfilled. “Kids love jewelry, too.” I also got an opportunity to learn Yiddish for that episode. “Shalom! Everyone.” It was fun!
The hardest thing to shoot was the scene in the second episode “Cold File”, where at Bert’s soccer practice, I need to run wild (super hyper) around the field MANY TIMES until crashing. While Kate was trying to pep Bert up, she accidentally hit me with a soccer ball. “Ow, my uterus!” (This was my line in the episode.) I was worried if I might lose something in my body after this shot. It turns out that boys don’t have it. Haha!
Watching the show, you guys seem to have a lot of fun. Who is your best buddy in the cast? What fun things do you get to do on set?
There are many fun things I get to do on set. I love learning how the production team put together a TV show. I also like to make my cast mates laugh and play with them. I like to go to crafty for snacks, too.
The Harrison family in “Trophy Wife” includes a lot of people, does your family look anything like the family on the show?
No, my family is pretty simple in a real life. My mommy, daddy, and I – that’s all. I am the only child in my family.
The first episode of Trophy Wife introduced us to Bert’s hamster. Do you have any pets? If your parents let you have any animal you could, which would it be?
I don’t have a pet at present. I’d like to have a dog, especially a large-sized breed of dog like Golden Retriever.
When you are not filming what do you enjoy doing? Who do you hang out with the most?
When I am not filming, I enjoy reading all kinds of books, swimming, and horse-back riding. I hang out with my parents the most during the weekends.
If you could play the character on any television series or movie, which would it be, and why?
Walter Disney. I admire him building an entertainment business that bring joys and dreams to people. I like to make positive influence to people and society, too.
Do you want to be a movie star when you are older, or do have other plans?
Yeah, I want to be seen on movies, too.
What would you like to say to the fans of “Trophy Wife”?
