-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox led this second Wednesday in September care of the two-hour season-premiere of The X Factor, which scored a very respectable 6.7 rating/11 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. (peaking at a 7.5/12 at 9:30 p.m.). But compared to its year-ago series-opener (8.7/14 on Wednesday 9/21/11), this was down by 23 percent. And a one-hour edition of competing The Voice on NBC (7.3/13 from 8-9 p.m.) bested the first hour of The X Factor (6.1/10) by 20 percent. Given all the hoopla of Britney Spears and Demi Lovato joining the judges table, the initial sampling could of…and should of…been higher. Keep in mind, that the 8.7 in the overnights last year translated into 12.49 million viewers and a 4.4/12 among adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day results).

At 9 p.m., The X Factor moved into the top spot, with a four percent advantage over America’s Got Talent on NBC (7.4/12 vs. 7.1/12, which was a season-high on the night for AGT). America’s Got Talent concludes with a two-hour installment tonight. As a benchmark, here are the half-hour results for The X Factor:

The X Factor (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 5.8/10 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 6.4/10 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 7.2/11 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 7.5/12 (#1)

Sorry, Simon Cowell…The Voice is a stronger option in the overnights. Stay tuned for the demos.

Out of America’s Got Talent on NBC at 10 p.m. was the series premiere/preview of NBC sitcom Guys With Kids, which inched past the first half of an encore telecast of CSI on CBS with a 4.4/ 7 in the overnights. While Guys With Kids, no doubt, will win the time period among adults 18-49, retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of America’s Got Talent (6.9/11) was only 64 percent. And this was opposite repeats on both ABC and CBS. Guys With Kids debuts in its regularly scheduled Wednesday 8:30 p.m. time period (out of Animal Practice) on September 26.

Capping off the evening for NBC was a repeat of the pilot episode of The New Normal at a second-place 3.1/ 6 at 10:30 p.m.

Elsewhere, Big Brother on CBS, which concludes for the season with a 90-minute installment next Wednesday, finished third with a 4.3/ 7 in the overnights at 8 p.m. One year earlier, Survivor: South Pacific kicked-off with a 6.6/11 in the time period on 9/14/11. Next were encore telecasts of Criminal Minds (#3: 3.8/ 6) and aforementioned CSI (#1: 4.3/ from 9-11 p.m.

Uneventful ABC populated the evening with repeats of The Middle (#4: 3.0/ 5), Suburgatory (#4: 2.5/ 4), Modern Family (#4: 3.1/ 5), another episode of Suburgatory (#4: 2.2/ 3) and Revenge (#3: 2.1/ 4), which moves to Sundays at 9 p.m. (into new drama 666 Park Avenue) this fall. And The CW aired flop game show Oh Sit! (#5: 0.6/ 1) and a repeat of Supernatural (#5: 0.5/ 1), which airs out of new drama Arrow effective on October 10.
