Suranne Jones and John Hannah star in A Touch of Cloth, a two-part comedy crime show due to be broadcast on Sky One on Sunday 26 and Monday 27 August 2012.

DCI Jack Cloth (played by John Hannah) is everything a policeman should not be but somehow his drunken bungling manages to get to the bottom of criminal activity, as will be seen in A Touch of Cloth, a two part comedy crime drama due to be shown on Sky One on Sunday 26 August and Monday 27 August 2012. On top of his problems is the recent mysterious death of his wife.

Helping him solve a string of murders is detective constable Anne Oldman (played by Suranne Jones), whose judgement is poor when it comes to all things policing. “I laughed out loud when I read the script,” said Jones in a Sky One press release. “It was so silly, ridiculous and fun.”

There will be two more cases for DCI Jack Cloth to solve as a second two-part story is being filmed for transmission set to be broadcast next year and two-hour film will follow, in which Karen Gillan (of Amy Pond in Doctor Who fame) will guest star.

Actors in A Touch of Cloth

Scottish actor John Hannah received a Bafta nomination for playing Matthew in the 1994 film Four Weddings and a Funeral and he was nominated for a Golden Nymph at the 2010 Monte-Carlo TV Festival for his role as Batiatus in Spartacus: Blood and Sand. He first appeared on TV screens though back in the late 1980s, when his role as Johnny Dawson in Bookie stood out. Other notable television parts have included DS Frank Drinkall in Out of the Blue, Doctor Iain McCallum in McCallum, DI John Rebus in Rebus, Martin Shepard in Alias, Robert Dalgety in MDs, Jack Roper in New Street Law, Jack Osbourne in Cold Blood and Rutger Simon in Damages.

Other roles have included Linda in My Wonderful Life, Beth in Vincent, Linda Nelson in Strictly Confidential, Martha Elliot in Harley Street, Idris in Doctor Who and Ruth Slater in Unforgiven (earning her an RTS best actress nomination). More recently she was Mona Lisa in The Sarah Jane Adventures, DC Laurie Franklin in Five Days and Sarah in Single Father. Her work as DC Rachel Bailey in Scott & Bailey earned her a National Television Award nomination.

Team Behind A Touch of Cloth

Written by Charlie Brooker and Daniel Maier, A Touch of Cloth is a Zeppotron production. Also on the writing team were Ben Caudell, Peter Holmes, Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris. The programme was based on a story by Boris Starling.

It was executive produced by Annabel Jones and Charlie Brooker, directed by Jim O’Hanlon and produced by Adam Tandy.

“It's taking aim at and is based on the very serious, brooding league of crime dramas you get these days,” said Brooker in the Sky One press release. “Moving on from the Agatha Christie puzzles and gentleman detectives that were slightly camp, the trend in more recent years has been troubled detectives on the trail of a ghastly serial killer, and the detective is often almost as messed up as the murderer is. Because those shows take themselves so seriously, we thought they were ripe for a mickey-take.”
