Awake - Dylan Minnette and Laura Allen Conference Call - Article

So, yesterday was the conference calll with Awake’s Laura Allen and Dylan Minnette. It was the first conference call I’ve ever been in, and it was pretty exciting. I am a huge fan of Awake even though only been two episodes have aired. I’m an even bigger fan of Jason Isaacs, and I’ve been waiting on this show for a while; I’m glad that it hasn’t disappointed yet, and from the answers Laura and Dylan were giving to some of the questions, it seems they are just as happy as we are.

They both fell in love with the show when they read the script. Dylan said he was doing a lot of pilots, and when he read the script for Awake he just knew it needed to be picked up. Laura was also a huge fan of the premise of the show and the pilot. They enjoyed the audition, and I was fascinated to learn Jason was very involved in the audition process.

There is a lot of speculation about who is really alive or if maybe Michael is actually dead--or in a comma--and this is all part of his hallucinations. Jason Isaacs, as a producer and lead actor, has come out to say in a few interviews that this isn’t true. One life is false, and he actually knows which one it is. However, Dylan and Laura aren’t as knowledgeable. They are unaware of which one of them is ‘real’, and they honestly couldn’t care less. They’re both fans of the show, and enjoy learning about it as they get the scripts (which Dylan said were labeled R for Red or G for Green before each scene to help ease the confusion). When asked about the the last scene in ‘The Little Guy’ both admitted that they do not know anything about the car accident. They’re just as in the dark as we are.

But when it came to the filming of the actual car crash they found it really fun. They both said that it was a blast filming it, and Dylan said that Jason even looked like he was having a lot of fun. When talking of working with Jason, they seemed that he is always making everything a lot of fun. Dylan says that he’s a great actor and he learns a lot from him performance wise, but that even though Jason is serious with his craft he’s a fun guy to be around. Apparently Jason always carries with iPod (and dock) around with him and often plays 80s music while getting the whole crew to sing along. It seems like a place where no one is ever bored, which is something you need when like Jason you work 5am-11pm hours.

They were also asked if we’ll ever see them both together, but seeing how Hannah and Rex are in different worlds it seems like it would a challenge. Of course if this were to happen, these scenes would need to be shot soon to make them plausible flashbacks, because it can’t seem the worlds could cross over. However Dylan and Laura were unwilling to answer these questions straightforward and decided to ‘pass’, which left me wondering exactly what is going to happen with it all later this season.

Something brought up by Dylan that I hadn’t realized/thought of was that Rex has no clue about the ‘hallucinations/dreams’ that Michael is dealing with. Dylan thinks that maybe Michael is scared to tell him, because he would seem nuts or something, and Michael wants to get closer to Rex more than anything, because Rex obviously had a closer relationship with his mother.

Dylan has already seen tomorrow’s episode (‘Guilty’), which he takes a major part in, because he’s kidnapped. He is really excited for everyone to see the episode, because he thinks it’s great. Another episode that both Dylan and Laura are excited for is ‘Not My Penguin’, which seems to bring a new dimension to what Michael can ‘dream’ about. Don’t forget to tune into NBC on Thursday at 10/9c to watch Awake and see just what has Dylan and Laura so excited.
