ABC's Beauty & The Beast is an epic political fantasy, it centers on the crown Princess Grace who is essentially ruling the country with her father sick and dying (he was poisoned) and her younger brother long missing on a quest to find her lost mother. She also has a younger sister Elizabeth. There is a rebel uprising against her father, The Beast who in this version is not human is a part of the rebel movement against her father, and kidnaps her during the pilot. Grace is extremely close and loyal to her father and is shocked by information the beast reveals to her about her father's less than honorable actions. The scripts plays everything dead serious and is completely different in tone from "Once Upon a Time". The focus is very much on the politics despite the title this is not a romance whatsoever.
There are alot more similarities to CW's The Selection than to the CW version of Beauty & The Beast which is essentially a procedural with no supernatural elements,In the CW version the beast is a deformed afghan-war veteran who has been experimented on. The CW version does have likable characters, and alot more focus on the beauty/beast romance. There is some ongoing background plot regarding her mother's murder which it appears the beast may be connected to.
On the whole the ABC version is much more ambitious but the CW version's characters are more likable and perhaps has more of a romantic draw but is at its core a procedural.
