-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox took center stage in the overnights on this first Wednesday in November with a two-hour edition of just-renewed The X Factor at a 7.8 rating/12 share from 8-10 p.m. The massive year-to-year growth of 225 percent is a result of two encore telecasts of Hell’s Kitchen populating the evening on 11/03/10. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

The X Factor (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 7.4/12 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 8.1/13 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 7.9/12 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 8.0/12 (#2)

On CBS, healthy Survivor: South Pacific (which finally featured an episode worth watching this season) remained a solid option with a second-place 7.1/11 at 8 p.m. One year earlier, the Survivor: Nicaragua edition scored a similar 7.4/12 on 11/03/10. Next on the Eye net was still reliable Criminal Minds (#2: 8.2/13 at 9 p.m.), which is one of the unsung heroes in primetime, followed by relocated granddaddy CSI at a dominant 6.9/11 at 10 p.m. One year earlier, former failed time period occupant The Defenders averaged an almost identical 6.7/11 in the overnights on 11/03/10.

The standout on ABC, of course, was Modern Family at a first-place 8.9/14 at 9 p.m., which will easily top the evening among adults 18-49. Lead-in Suburgatory lost steam with a 5.7/ 9 (#3) at 8:30 p.m., but that was still 14 percent above failed year-ago occupant Better With You (5.0/ 8 on 11/03/10). And retention for Suburgatory out of The Middle (#3: 6.1/10 at 8 p.m.), another unsung hero, was solid at 93 percent.

Happy Endings on ABC at 9:30 p.m., unfortunately, dipped to a fourth-place 5.0/ 8. Comparably, that was 44 percent below Modern Family and seven percent behind year-ago occupant Cougar Town (5.4/ 8 on 11/03/10), which returns in a still-to-be determined time period in midseason. But more positive news for the alphabet net was recently introduced drama Revenge, which perked up to second at 10 p.m. with a 6.4/11 in the overnights. Compared to year-ago Wednesday 10 p.m. special In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts (4.6/ 7 on 11/03/10), this was an increase of 39 percent.

Over at NBC, once promising Up All Night dipped to a series-low 3.5/ 6 (#4) in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was off by 15 percent from its most recent original telecast on Oct. 19 (4.1/ 7). One year earlier, failed NBC spy drama Undercovers was stronger at a 4.0/ 6 on 11/03/10. A repeat of Up All Night followed with a 2.4/ 4 (#4) at 8:30 p.m.

Next on NBC was older skewing legal drama Harry’s Law (#4: 5.2/ 8 at 9 p.m.), which built from the Up All Night encore by a whopping 117 percent. And that led into tired Law & Order: SVU at a last-place 5.5/ 9 at 10 p.m., which was down by eight percent from short-lived year-ago time period occupant Law & Order: Los Angeles (6.0/10 on 11/03/10).

The CW capped off the evening with a repeat of Ringer (#5: 0.9/ 1) and long-in-the-tooth America’s Top Model (#5: 1.7/ 3: down 37 percent year-to-year), which will be replaced in January by upcoming non-scripted hour Remodeled. See The CW in Midseason right below for more details.
