Hung - Episode 3.01 - Don't Give Up on Detroit or Hung Like a Horse - Review

"You only have to kill one person to be a killer, baby." —Lenore

After a second season that seemingly went nowhere — and fast — Hung returned tonight with something we've been dying to see: Ray and Tanya being even remotely successful. By the episode's end, both Ray and Tanya were actually smiling and Ray's house actually had made progress. Real progress.

How they get there, that is opening a shop (called, as always, Happiness Consultants) and getting a small business loan from a bank by actually prostituting Ray to the bankperson who ends up having a lesbian affair with her co-worker, is so past believable it doesn't even matter. It seems, oftentimes, Hung has just given up on being funny; it would rather just shock you, hoping the shock factor would make you chuckle at least in the slightest, even if it's just nervous laughter.

An entire montage of practically every standing-up sex position would do that to you. Especially if you're watching with your mother.

But that's neither here nor there because I was having fun, glaringly obvious once Jess and the kids showed up and I realized that this show actually tries to deal with real life issues like economy and family. During an episode like this, I couldn't care less about that stuff.

And it seems like there's actual storyline that will veer into a different direction, anyway: competition, since Lenore has picked herself up a younger "hooker dude." That could be entertaining to watch. And with Ray's house fixed up, we'll get less (better yet no) frowned-faced Ray hammering away at his rotting house. Hopefully, it will stay that way all season.

A very promising start.
