Haven - Episode 2.01 - A Tale of Two Audreys - Review

Haven returned to Syfy last night with its season 2 premiere “A Tale of Two Audreys”. The show had left the audience hanging after the season 1 finale when a new character showed up who also claimed to be Audrey Parker.

The episode started right where season 1 had finished. Nathan and Audrey arrested “other Audrey” (sorry but it’s the only way) assuming she was an imposter! “Other Audrey” isn’t so familiar with the Troubled in Haven. She goes along with it, helps them with the case, and by the end has earned the trust of Audrey!

We learn that both Audreys share the same memories after the two shared a story that they had never told before. I loved the scene between the two Audreys at the end! It has certainly opened up more doors for the season. It also appears that they have the same boss, who is actually a different person. Yeah, this isn’t going to be confusing!

I adored the idea for the main case for this episode! The trouble began when the water around the church turned into blood, then it rained frogs, then came the gnats and before we know it, The Biblical Plague has come to Haven. Nathan, Audrey and the other Audrey connect the incidents back to a man named TJ! By the time they find him, the town is dark and some of the inhabitants have boils, freaky stuff!

TJ is holding a gun to his head as he believes he needs to die to stop the first sons from dying, including his own son. It turns out that TJ is “Troubled”, and had been in a church earlier on and had read the bible. Audrey gets him to read a story about a rabbit and before we know it, all is well. It was such a brilliant idea but it was solved very quickly without much thought.

We also discover that Duke has an ex-wife, Evi, in this episode .... That’s certainly one thing I wasn’t expecting to happen! Evi explains that she came back to see why Duke returned to his hometown, Haven. However, Duke wants her gone as he doesn’t believe Haven is a safe place to be but she refuses to leave. Definitely an interesting twist to the Duke story!

Overall, a great start back to the season! I’m excited to see how they handle the “new Audrey” and develop this. I hope it’s not dragged out over the entire season though. We’ve been waiting a long time to find out what’s going on and there are plenty of other mysteries to focus on rather than dragging this one out!

For me, the only real issue with Haven is that the plots can get so deep and have a lot of mystery and build up, but then all of a sudden, they’re resolved within a minute or two and it doesn’t always make complete sense, as was the case in last night’s episode. Nevertheless, Haven is an enjoyable television show which certainly makes Friday nights more interesting!

Also, I can’t go without mentioning the scene where Duke helps Nathan bury his father! So sweet!

If you’ve not checked out Haven before, I would definitely recommend it. It’s not the best show on TV but it’s a show that leaves you wanting more and has had some great ideas for “the Troubled” cases, (such as bringing stuffed animals to life and a musician whose music causes people to go insane). What’s more, it has a fantastic cast!

I hope the show does well this season, I can’t wait for more episodes!
