Grey's Anatomy - Season Finale - Unaccompanied Minor - Review

The season of change came to a conclusion last night in Grey’s Anatomy’s season finale “Unaccompanied Minor”. The episode was certainly not as dramatic as last years, but it was full of emotional moments and nicely concluded some of this season’s storylines whilst setting the way for season 8.

The episode started back at Meredith and Derek’s “dream” house, which is taking far too long to be built for my liking! Derek pointed out where Zola’s room was going to be, and all seemed happy in the world of Mer/Der. That was until Derek discovered that Meredith tampered with his medical trial. Understandably, both the Chief and Derek were very angry at Meredith. She refused to say what she did and the Chief threatened to fire her.

Once the Chief discovered it was Adele’s drugs who Meredith had tampered with, he took a step back and only suspended her. Derek was still having none of it though. He told Meredith he can’t raise a child with someone “who doesn’t know right from wrong”. Meredith was extremely angry with Alex, as anyone would be in that situation, and asks him to move out. This season has not been good for Alex and as a fan of Alex, I feel like he’s been shoved to the side and walked all over. Lucy did nothing for him and I understand the actress has another show now, but the whole character was pointless. I hope next season we start to see some good character development for Alex.

As this was unfolding, we were also waiting for patients to start arriving from a plane which had crashed with over 200 people on board. As the episode went on, it became pretty clear there were no survivors. In the end, it turned out one child survived and we saw about two minutes of her, if that. I did love this episode, but why couldn’t the plane crash have been the focus? Drama is what Shonda does best. I really think it would have been a fantastic episode if we had seen the site of the crash, and we saw our favourite surgeons trying to rescue people. Even just seeing some more of the medical side would have been good.

Nevertheless, the plane crash storyline still managed to deliver some raw human emotion as the families of the crash waited to hear about the child who had survived. I did find myself holding back tears when the family pretended their son was in surgery to make the mother of the child feel better. It’s scenes like this that make Grey’s Anatomy so powerful. It’s a shame we didn’t see more.

The episode also revealed that Cristina was pregnant. As we already knew, Cristina does not want children, and she does not want this child. Owen on the other hand does, he reveals that he wants to be with someone who wants children. At the end of the episode, Cristina reveals she is having an abortion, and Owen asks her to leave. This sort of happened last year with Callie and Arizona, so let’s hope we go down a different route with this one.

My prediction last week of April becoming Chief Resident was correct. April has gone from being one of the most irritating characters on television to one of my favourites in one season, her character has developed really well this year. I’m not sure how good she will be at her job though, I guess next season will tell that story. It’s a shame we didn’t see any of her and Stark. We did see Henry reveal his feelings for Teddy however after Teddy announced she was leaving with Andrew to go to Germany. He told her she was his “best friend”. Later on in the episode, she told Henry that he was her husband, and that she is falling in love with him. I’m so happy for them. It was about time.

We also saw Mark give Lexie away to Jackson, sorry Slexie fans, doesn’t look like we’re getting any Mark and Lexie for a while. It is clear they have feelings for each other, but it is understandable why Lexie is upset. Still, I think it's time Lexie deals with this issues, I'm not convinced by her and Avery.

The episode ended with baby Zola at home with Meredith (yay), but without Derek (nay). Meredith seemed like such a natural with Zola, and even though it would have be nice to see Derek there too, I am glad the season ended with baby Zola and Meredith together. It shows how far Meredith has come since the show began and I’m excited to watch Meredith become a parent next season.

I think that just about covers everything! What did we all think?

For me, the episode was great, but it relied too much on “soap” style story lines, this whole season has. It’s been all about break ups, pregnancies and marriages and we've barely seen the medical side in comparison to early seasons. There have been some excellent episodes though, “Golden Hour” being one of them. I like it when we see the core of Grey’s Anatomy. There are some fantastic actors on this show, and Shonda and the writers have proved to us on many occasions that they are capable of delivering mind-blowing episodes, I just don’t think we had that this season. I did still enjoy it however, and like I said, there were many highlights. ‘Unaccompanied Minor’ certainly concluded many of this season’s stories and opened up many more. So what do we think ... will April make a good Chief Resident? Will Cristina have the abortion? Will Derek return to Meredith? Will Alex and Meredith patch things up? There’s certainly lots to think about it.

I just can’t believe another season is over, bring on season 8!
