Off The Map - Pilot/Episode 1.02 - Review

I was going to write a review for the pilot last week but thought it would be better to watch this week's episode too and review them together so far.

'Off The Map' is the latest medical show to come from Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. It is focused around a group of doctors who work at a medical clinic in a South American village who are faced with the challenges of working in conditions far from what they are used to.

I have to admit, when I first heard about Off the Map I wasn't very excited for it. As much as I love Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, I did wonder if we really needed yet another medical show from Shonda. However, after watching Off the Map, I can say I have enjoyed both episodes and am excited about what's to come for the remainder of the season.

The characters on this show seem great so far! First we have Lily who recently returned to medicine after taking some personal time. At the beginning, I thought she was going to be a little bit irritating but she quickly grew on me! She's confident, witty and has a spark that brings the character to life. Next we have Mina who is very enthusiastic and passionate about her work. I took a liking to Mina straight away and I think we can expect some great storylines with her. Tommy is the local heartthrob Doctor on the show. He reminds me so much of Alex Karev and I think their characters will be pretty similar.

Heading up the Doctor's team there is Zita and Ben. Both Zita and Ben seem to be quite tough on the new Doctors but they're both adorable! I am already in love with Ben *coughs* Derek *coughs*. It's so hard not to compare the show to Grey's Anatomy but the range of characters is very similar, but that's not a bad thing! The characters on Off the Map will be faced with different challenges to those on Grey's Anatomy and I'm sure as the show develops, each of the characters will come into their own.

The show itself has already provided some brilliant television scenes. I was very touched at the ending to the first episode with the scene on the lake. The second episode which featured a man being crushed by a snake was also brilliant. This show has so much potential with different medical cases and can go to places where none of the other medical shows have the opportunity to go so I hope the ratings pick up this week.

I really would encourage people who didn't watch Off the Map because it was just another medical show to give it a go. Although the structure of the episodes is similar to that on Grey's Anatomy, the show itself has a completely different feel and meaning to it. You are watching Doctors cope with having to deal with everyday medical situations but in tough conditions as well as medical cases that are not common on normal medical shows (being crushed by a snake for example).

Overall, Off the Map really surprised me. The characters are brilliant, the medical cases have so much potential and the show is fresh and exciting. It's nice to watch these characters bond together and develop. I for one am eager to watch the remainder of the season and see what Shonda has in store for us all!

I'm not promising weekly reviews for this show, I will see how the show develops first!
