Medium - Episode 7.13 - Series Finale - Review

After seven years, last night we said goodbye to Allison and Joe Dubois, and the other cast in the series finale of Medium, "Me Without You". I thought I'd write a mini review of the finale as well as the show which will be greatly missed!

For me, Medium will always be one of the most underrated shows on television, it certainly did not get enough credit throughout its seven years. The show always managed to stay grounded and real despite its genre which always impressed me, it never went too far with the "supernatural" element. The crime stories were always creative and Medium often pushed the boundaries and dealt with dark crimes which added a thrill to the viewing!

I really enjoyed the series finale of Medium. At the beginning, Allison receives a phone call from Joe while he is flying back from Hawaii but the plane hits turbulence and crashes into the sea and Joe dies. When Allison wakes up, we are seven years in the future. We see that Manuel Devalos is now the Mayor, Allison is now a lawyer and Lee Scanlon is the head of Police. Bridget is now at college, Marie still at school and Ariel is pregnant and living in Boston. I loved the element of jumping seven years into the future, even if it was only just a dream. It means we know what happens to each of the characters which is always a plus when it comes to a series finale.

Still seven years into the future, Allison begins to dream about Joe and believes he is actually alive. She dreams that he actually washed up on a shore in Mexico with no memory and is working as a drug mule. After putting her career at risk, Allison drives out to Mexico to find Joe and she reminds him of who he is. I got a little bit put off at this point, it was a little cliché. But of course, it was just a dream!

When Allison awakes (back in the present), she sees Joe standing at the door and is relieved to find out it was just a dream. However, Joe's plane really did crash and Joe, sadly, really is dead. I can't believe they killed Joe!! I was a bit disappointed for his character, I think he deserved better, I think they all did. However, it did make for some very moving scenes and me crying like a baby! We then jumped 41 years into the future to when Allison dies. We see that each of their children have had kids and have grown up healthy. When Allison dies, she is reunited with Joe. I genuinely could not stop crying here!

As the episode finished, we saw each of the cast members say silent goodbyes to the show which I loved! And again, it made me cry. Overall, the episode was very moving and a brilliant end to the show as much as I wish Joe hadn't died. But still, seeing Joe and Allison re-unite was one of the best moments of the entire show for me. Joe and Allison have always been one of the most realistic couples on television, the whole family was. They dealt with issues that families deal with everyday which so many current television shows lack.

It really saddens me that this show has finished. Even though it was based around a "medium", I still found it one of the most grounded and realistic shows on television. It never lost what first made it so brilliant which after seven years, is pretty incredible. Even so, I do think it was its time to end. The show had become a little "same-old" lately and I'm glad the show has gone now, while it was still brilliant, then later when it may have lost that spark.

I really can't compliment the actors and writers of Medium enough. They have produced a quality television show that has always been so unfairly underrated. Medium will be greatly missed.
