After winning widespread acclaim for her film debut "Tiny Furniture," which has already earned three Independent Spirit nominations, and also getting touted in a New Yorker profile, writer and filmmaker Lena Dunham's been on Hollywood's mind, and HBO's more than most. On Friday, the network announced that it had picked up Dunham's new comedy series, "Girls," which she'll write, direct the pilot and executive produce alongside Judd Apatow. According to HBO, the show, which takes place in New York, is "a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s."

“Lena Dunham quickly established herself as an important young talent with her first feature film,” said Sue Naegle, president of HBO Entertainment, in a statement. “We are thrilled to team up with her and fellow executive producers Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner for this exciting project.”

Dunham will also star in the project, along with her "Tiny Furniture" sidekick Jemima Kirke and Allison Williams (“American Dreams”), Adam Driver (HBO’s “You Don’t Know Jack”) and Zosia Mamet (“Mad Men”).
