________

-Ratings Breakdown:
Monday in primetime is a different world minus Dancing with the Stars on ABC. That said, CBS led the overnights on this first Monday in December care of its combination of How I Met Your Mother (#1: 6.6 rating/10 share), Rules of Engagement (#2: 5.8/ 9), Two and a Half Men (#1: 9.0/13), Mike & Molly (#1: 7.2/10) and Hawaii Five-O (#1: 7.1/11). While props go to any series dominating a time period, one year earlier former 9:30-11 p.m. Eye net occupants The Big Bang Theory (8.1/12) and CSI: Miami (7.9/13), both on Dec. 7, 2009, were stronger.

In season-premiere news, NBC holiday reality/competition The Sing-Off, which also airs in the Wednesday 8-10 p.m. block, was on the map with a respectable 5.8/ 9 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

The Sing-Off (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 6.0/ 9 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 6.1/ 9 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 5.6/ 8 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 5.7/ 8 (#2)

Compared to one year earlier, this was an increase of 35 percent from back-to-back encore telecasts of Law & Order: SVU (4.3/ 7 on Dec. 7, 2009). Despite the improved lead-in support, struggling freshman drama Chase, which just had its episode order slashed from 22 to 18, finished a distant third with a 3.5/ 5 at 10 p.m. As a reminder, Chase will move to Wednesday at 9 p.m. beginning on Jan. 12 into Law & Order: SVU, which shifts back one hour. Unfortunately, there is no reason to believe the move will prove beneficial.

Over at ABC, week three of Skating with the Stars sunk to an embarrassing 3.0/ 4 from 8-9:30 p.m., dipping by half-hour as follows:

Skating with the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 3.4/ 5 (#4)
8:30 p.m.: 2.9/ 4 (#4)
9:00 p.m.: 2.7/ 4 (#4)

Three-week overnight track for Skating with the Stars: 7.0/11 – 4.5/ 7 – 3.0/ 4. Word of advice to ABC: no more of the Dancing with the Stars clones, please.

Skating with the Stars led into a repeat of Modern Family at 9:30 p.m. (#4: 2.8/ 4), followed by Castle at a second-place 5.9/10 at 10 p.m. Worth positively noting for Castle was the overnight growth of a hefty 111 percent out of the Modern Family encore. For more on overused Modern Family, see TV Tidbits below.

Elsewhere, inaugural fan-voted gala American Country Awards on Fox was a disappointment, with a lackluster 3.6/ 5 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. One year earlier, Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special on Fox was considerably stronger at a 5.5/ 8 on Dec. 7, 2009. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

American Country Awards (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 3.8/ 6 (#3)
8:30 p.m.: 3.7/ 5 (#3)
9:00 p.m.: 3.4/ 5 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 3.6/ 5 (#3)

Last, and very least, was The CW’s combination of 90210 (1.7/ 3) and Gossip Girl (1.7/ 2), which never resonate in the overnights. Let’s see what happens when the female demos come in.
