Weeds Finale Post-Mortem: Creator Jenji Kohan Says Show May End After Next Season

Smoke 'em if you got 'em, because Weeds may not be around much longer.

In Monday's sixth season finale, Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) sacrificed herself by claiming responsibility for the murder of Pilar. She was last seen surrounded by FBI agents at the airport, while her family was on a plane headed for Europe. Once again, it looks like Nancy's out of options. Or is she? Will we next see her plotting a season-long jail break? Series creator Jenji Kohan says getting stuck in major jams is certainly nothing new for Nancy.

Kohan talks to TVGuide.com about Monday's cliff-hanger, why the upcoming seventh season may be the last, and whether Nancy will be wearing an orange jumpsuit when the show returns.

TVGuide.com: Nancy made the decision to set her family free. It's probably her first selfless act. What motivated you to get her to that point?

Kohan: She couldn't hide from her behavior anymore, or from what her behavior had wrought. There was just too much evidence that things were not going to get better as much as she hoped they would. Danger would always follow them. There's been so many reminders this year of how she was failing — no one was letting her off the hook — and she finally just had to deal with that.

TVGuide.com: Nancy has set her family free, but I'm sure we'll see them again. Do you have plans to set part of the action in Europe next year?

Kohan: I can't predict the future. I can't tell you what's going to happen next year until it's next year.

TVGuide.com: Showtime renewed the show for a seventh season. Has the network given any indication that it will be the final season?

Kohan: In my mind, it is. Everyone's contract is up next year, [including] the actors and mine. Seven years is a good run, and I'd rather leave while on top. I'd never say never, but I have a feeling this might be it. [Editor's note: A Showtime spokesperson says any decision on an eighth season will not be made until next summer.]

TVGuide.com: How does it feel heading into what might be the end?

Kohan: It's very strange and exciting and scary and sad in a lot of ways. We have such an extraordinary team. I would hope to take everyone over to [my] next project, including some of the actors, if possible. I think it's such a strong group of people across the board. That will be very hard to let go of. However, I think growth is an obligation of a writer and it's time to stretch my wings.

TVGuide.com: Do you have a clear picture in your mind of how you want the series to end?

Kohan: I do, which I would never reveal. There are two versions of the end of the series that I've had in mind, and it would be figuring out which way to go.

TVGuide.com: I'm guessing one version has Nancy dying?

Kohan: Potentially. [Laughs] In a blaze of glory. She certainly does tempt fate, and fate has a way of catching up to you.

TVGuide.com: Before then, will Andy (Justin Kirk) ever get his day with Nancy?

Kohan: He's a very determined young man. I don't know. I think they're very afraid of ruining what they have. There's a very real potential to ruin what they have with sex. It would change everything. It's like toast: Once you're toast, you can never be bread again.

TVGuide.com: Is it too early to say redemption may be a theme of Season 7?

Kohan: It's still too early to say, but I don't know if I believe in redemption. [Laughs] A mantra of the show all along has been that people don't change. I don't want to sell that out.

TVGuide.com: If that's true, I want to see Nancy in a jail jumpsuit next season.

Kohan: We have to see how [Parker] looks in orange. We'll see.
