-Ratings Breakdown:
Without ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, which concluded its fall season last week, Monday is a very different scenario. With that in mind, CBS kicked-off the week on a winning overnight note, beating second-place ABC by 26 percent. But its lackluster average 5.9 rating/9 share is a reflection of repeats of How I Met Your Mother (5.2 rating/8 share), Rules of Engagement (4.9/ 8), Two and a Half Men (7.8/11), Mike & Molly (6.2/ 9) and Hawaii Five-O (5.7/ 9). CBS finished first in each of the six half-hours despite airing encore telecasts. With the holidays approaching, consider these “winning” performances.

Week two of ABC’s Skating with the Stars, which did not have the lead-in support this week from Dancing with the Stars, took an expected tumble, with a 4.5/ 7 in the overnights from 8-9:30 p.m., and the half-hour breakdown as follows:

Skating with the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 4.9/ 7 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 4.4/ 7 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 4.2/ 6 (#2t)

One week earlier, Skating with the Stars opened with an approximate 7.0/11 on Nov. 22. Does anyone even care that Sean Young was the first to depart? Leading out of the uneventful skating extravaganza was 90-minute ABC holiday special CMA Country Kitchen at a slightly higher 4.9/ 8 from 9:30-11 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

CMA Country Kitchen (ABC)
9:30 p.m.: 5.0/ 7 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 5.0/ 8 (#2)
10:30 p.m.: 4.8/ 8 (#2)

NBC had a typically sluggish Monday with its soon-to-be revised combination of Chuck (#3: 4.2/ 6), The Event (#3: 4.2/ 6) and Chase (#3: 4.1/ 7). As a reminder, upcoming NBC scripted dramas The Cape and Harry’s Law will inherit the Monday 9-11 p.m. block effective on Monday, Jan. 17. Previewing with a two-hour installment on Sunday, Jan. 9, The Cape stars David Lyons as a cop framed for murder who tries to clear his name by taking on the persona of his son’s (Ryan Wynott) favorite superhero. Harry’s Law from executive producer David E. Kelly is the comedic story of a curmudgeonly ex-patent lawyer (Kathy Bates) who abruptly loses her job and finds herself – and her shoe-savant assistant (Brittany Snow) – partnered with a legal hotshot (Nate Corddry) and a young college student (Aml Ameen) in a new law firm.

The Event returns on Monday, Feb. 28 (with a two-hour broadcast), followed by relocated Parenthood at 10 p.m. effective on March 7. Chase will move to Wednesday at 9 p.m. beginning on Jan. 12 into Law & Order: SVU, which shifts back one hour.

Fox populated the evening with a repeat of House (#4: 3.5/ 5) and Lie to Me (#4: 4.1/ 6), which is worthy of positive mention for building by 21 percent out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of the House encore (3.4/ 5). And The CW closed the evening with original installments of 90210 (#5: 1.8/ 3) and Gossip Girl (#5: 1.7/ 3), which just do not resonate in the overnights. Let’s wait and see what the young female demos look like.
