-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led the Wednesday troops in both total viewers and adults 18-49 care of Survivor: Nicaragua (Viewers: #1, 12.01 million; A18-49: #1, 3.5 rating/10 share), which continues to outdeliver year-ago occupants The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried by double-digit percentages, underrated Criminal Minds (Viewers: #1, 14.29 million; A18-49: #1, 3.7/10) and freshman The Defenders (Viewers: #1, 9.37 million; A18-49: #1t, 1.9/ 6). While dominance is certainly good, The Defenders dipped by 5.10 million viewers and 50 percent among adults 18-49 from the 9:30 p.m. portion of Criminal Minds (Viewers: 14.47 million; A18-49: 3.8/10). Year-ago occupant CSI: NY was considerably stronger at 13.62 million viewers. By falling under a 2-rating in the demo, The Defenders this week is a “loser.”

If CBS decides at some point to schedule spin-off Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior in the Wednesday 10 p.m. hour, expect a considerably greater return. As for Survivor, yes…the must see reality/competition is now officially back on track.

NBC opened the evening with a last-minute addition, Dateline: William & Kate, which stepped in for canceled Undercovers and averaged 6.70 million viewers (#3) and a fourth-place 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#4) at 8 p.m. One week earlier, Undercovers finished with 5.13 million viewers and a 1.2/ 4 in the demo, so this was a notable improvement.

Next on NBC was Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #3, 7.63 million; A18-49: #4, 2.1/ 6 at 9 p.m.), which moves to Wednesday at 10 p.m. effective on January 12, followed by freshman Law & Order: Los Angeles (Viewers: #2, 7.83 million; A18-49: #1t, 1.9/ 6), which shifts to Tuesday at 10 p.m. effective on February 8 out of The Biggest Loser: Couples.

Over at ABC, sophomore The Middle remains in positive shape, with 9.19 million viewers (#2) and a 2.8/ 9 among adults 18-49 (#2) at 8 p.m. Recent 8:30 p.m. entry Better with You also finished second, but it dipped to 7.03 million viewers and a 2.3/ 7 in the demo. Emmy winner Modern Family remains the ABC Wednesday standout, with 12.00 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 4.7/13 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m., which topped the charts for the night in the demo. But the network can do better at 9:30 p.m. than sophomore Cougar Town (Viewers: #3, 7.13 million; A18-49: #2, 3.0/ 8), which dipped by 4.87 million viewers and 36 percent among adults 18-49 from Modern Family.

ABC capped off the evening with 10 p.m. special, 25 Years of Sexy: People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive!, at a last-place finish in both total viewers (4.16 million) and adults 18-49 (1.5/ 5) at 10 p.m. Not so sexy, I guess.

In season-premiere news, Human Target on Fox was on the map with 6.62 million viewers (#4) and a third-place 1.8/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. One week earlier, Hell’s Kitchen was softer in total viewers (5.93 million on Nov. 10), but noticeable stronger among adults 18-49 (2.8/ 8). Hell’s Kitchen at 9 p.m. led out of Human Target with 5.87 million viewers (#4) and a third-place 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49.

The CW had mixed Wednesday news, as usual, with its combination of veteran America’s Next Top Model (Viewers: #5, 2.50 million; A18-49: #5, 1.1/ 3) and freshman drama Hellcats (Viewers: #5, 2.06 million; A18-49: #5, 0.9/ 2), which had respectable retention.
