Hellcats - Episode 1.02 - I Say A Little Prayer - Recap

Last night The CW's new teen 'Bring It On' drama 'Hellcats' returned for its second episode. After a strong premiere last week, many eyes were on the Hellcats to see if they can continue their witty, fun drama.

In the second episode, we meet the Hellcats main competition, The Cyclones. It is soon apparent that there is a connection between Savannah and the Cyclones captain, Charlotte. After Charlotte takes a nasty fall during their performance at qualifiers and is rushed to hospital, we discover that Savannah is actually Charlotte's sister and that there are some major family problems. Savannah reveals that she has not been in a room altogether with her family for a year. I still need to warm to Savannah, I find her 'too nice' and 'simplistic' so far. I am hoping this storyline adds much more depth to her character and enables more of an emotional connection between the audience and Savannah.

We also find out more about Marti's mum, Wanda. She tries to get backstage to support the team but is led away by Marti and Savannah after Dan informs Savannah about some of the things Marti's mum has done to her in the past. Wanda also reveals she has been evicted from her home after pouring paint over her landlord's car putting Marti in a difficult position. After introducing Savannah's family issues, it will interesting to see how her and Marti connect. Both story lines have the potential to tie in well together and add more depth to this light, fun show. I just hope the writer's don't go overboard with 'family drama'.

As the episode progresses, we go deeper into both Marti's and Savannah's family problems. Savannah is forced to miss a prayer session for her sister because of the Hellcats leading her mum to ignore her. We discover that Savannah transferring from her previous college is what caused the family problems. She decided to move after not feeling like she was growing at her previous college even though there is lots of family history there. Savannah reveals her family believes she "abandoned God" when transferring and not just her family history. There is a moment in the episode where we see Savannah say a prayer for her sister, I found this very touching.

The final ten minutes of the episode was set at qualifiers where the Hellcats were competing for a spot in Nationals. Marti had lied to her mum and told her the squad were unable to switch places after Charlotte's fall so the squad was over. However, Wanda found out that she was lying and turned up at the competition. I do love Marti but sometimes I want to shout at her. She keeps telling her mum to leave her alone and stop turning up all the time, then changes her mind and tells her she can stay. I did enjoy the little heart-to-heart she had with her mum however.

The Hellcats performed their routine successfully with the football squad cheering them on. The Hellcats managed to place first. The episode ended with Marti being happy her mum was there to support her and Savannah and Dan flirting. If this episode was the end, it would actually pass as the next Bring It On movie, (that's not a bad thing).

This episode certainly took us to a deeper, more serious level which I think the writers needed to do to help us learn more about the characters. I did feel at one point that there was too much family drama going on so I hope the writers are going to spread this out evenly. This episode managed to open up lots of potential for the rest of the season. As well as Savannah's and Marti's family issues, we saw a possible love triangle form between Vanessa, her boyfriend and the football coach as well as learning that Alice is really not a nice person and is going to be a trouble maker for Marti and the other Hellcats.

Once again, I really enjoyed this episode. Why someone hasn't thought of a cheerleading TV series sooner I don't know.
