Empire - Treasons, Stratagems and Spoils - Review

This season of Empire is flying away: it has been a strong year, and twist after twist we are about to arrive at the fall finale. “Treasons, Stratagems and Spoils” is an entertaining and full-of-fun episode. Let’s summarize what happened.

I want to start with the socially relevant part: Cookie and Carol are worried about Candace. They think that she has been beaten by her husband. When they go to her house they find out that she is being attacked by her son with mental problems. In a difficult and heartbreaking scene, Cookie tries to defend her sister, but she has to call the police. They arrive and they point a gun to Franklin. It’s a relevant and really problematic issue in the US: if you are not white, you always risk to be killed by the police. Empire doesn’t hide its message and makes it clear to the viewer: this is America. I loved this part.

Considering the rest of the episode, there is a huge twist: a new Lyon-son is rising. At the end of the episode, there is a big reveal concerning Jeff Kingsley. It is revealed that he is Lucious’s son. In just a few shocking minutes, the show could change forever. How will the family react to this unexpected news?

The rest of the time was dedicated to Jamal, but it was quite boring. Sometimes he can be really annoying and not so interesting as a character.

All in all, I really enjoyed this episode. Empire struggled quality-wise in these latest years, but after the Season 4’s Renaissance, it’s on a good track. Catch up!

And you? What do you think of “Treasons, Stratagems and Spoils”?
