    Ratings Breakdown:
Fox topped this third Thursday in January care of two more hours of “American Idol,” which scored a 6.4 rating/10 share in the household overnights and increased year-to-year by three percent. For a series in its 15th – and final – season, this is certainly worthy of a “winners” label.

In season-premiere news, The CW”s long-awaited “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” opened with a last-place 2.3/ 4 in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m. While this does seem low on paper, keep in mind that overnight results this week for “The Flash” on Tuesday (2.5/ 4) and “Arrow” on Wednesday (1.9/ 3) were in a similar range. And that 2.5 for “The Flash” translated into 3.41 million viewers and a 1.3 rating/4 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data. So, this is indeed an adequate start for “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” and a significant improvement over recent time period occupant “The Vampire Diaries.” Compared to the series-premiere of “The Flash” (3.4/ 5 on 10/07/14), however, this was down by 32 percent.

Leading out of “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” was the third season-premiere of “The 100” at a 1.3/ 2 from 9-10 p.m., which slipped by a hefty 43 percent.

On CBS, freshman comedy “Life in Pieces” had its best overnight retention to-date – 79 percent – out of “The Big Bang Theory.” An encore of “Big Bang” opened with a dominant 7.1/11 in the 8 p.m. half-hour, followed by a 5.6/ 9 (#2) for “Life in Pieces” at 8:30 p.m. Next was “Mom” at a compatible 5.5/ 9 at 9 p.m., followed by recently introduced “Angel From Hell” at a third-place 4.4/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. While 80 percent retention for “Angel From Hell” out of “Mom” is certainly not bad, I personally see no need for a second season of the Jane Lynch comedy.

The eye net capped off the night with DVR-friendly “Elementary” at a 4.1 7 (#2) at 10 p.m.

Over at NBC, week three of J.Lo crime solver “Shades of Blue” won the 10 p.m. hour with a 4.9/ 8 in the overnights, which was four percent above the 4.7/ 8 one week earlier. And that 4.7 rating in the overnights translated into 6.64 million viewers and a 1.3/ 5 among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). Overnight retention for “Shades of Blue” out of lead-in “The Blacklist” (#2: 5.3/ 8 – best performance since its season premiere) was solid at a 89 percent. Chances of a second season of “Shades of Blue” are definitely looking positive.

Earlier in the evening on NBC was canceled “Heroes Reborn” at a fourth-place 2.5/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.

ABC capped off the night with sophomore “Beyond the Tank” at a 3.2/ 5 (#3) in the 8 p.m. hour, followed by two-hours of flop “My Diet is Better Than Yours” at a 1.7/ 3 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m.
